2 – After Everyone Left the Chapel, I Tried to Explain Away the Red Dress, but My Husband’s Silence Made It Harder

I didn't ask Theo about the dress that day.

I wish I could say I was being considerate.

The truth was less generous.

I was afraid of what he might tell me.

After the service, people gathered outside the chapel and spoke in low voices.

Some embraced me.

Others held my hands and told me how sorry they were.

I thanked them because I had learned that grief made people expect certain responses.

They wanted to know I had heard them.

They wanted to believe their words had helped.

I couldn't blame them.

I had probably done the same thing for other people.

But every conversation felt like standing in a room where I couldn't find the door.

I wanted everyone to go home.

I wanted the day to be over.

And I wanted Theo to explain himself.

Those wishes seemed impossible to reconcile.

I saw him near the entrance, speaking to no one.

The red dress was still impossible to ignore.

In the daylight outside, it looked even brighter than it had beneath the chapel lights.

He stood with his arms close to his sides, listening to a woman who had approached him.

She spoke briefly.

He nodded.

Then she walked away.

I wondered what she had said.

I wondered what everyone was saying about him when he wasn't close enough to hear.

I also wondered whether he cared.

He had known what people might think when he chose that dress.

At least, I assumed he had.

I couldn't imagine wearing something so striking to a funeral without understanding the attention it would bring.

But perhaps that was because I had spent my life trying not to draw attention to myself.

Theo had never seemed especially interested in doing what other people expected.

Jack had liked that about him.

I remembered the way my son used to defend people who were being talked about.

He never made a grand speech.

He would simply ask why everyone was so concerned with something that didn't belong to them.

Sometimes his questions annoyed me.

Now I wished I had listened more carefully.

Daniel stood beside me while people continued to offer their condolences.

He thanked them politely.

He looked composed.

Anyone watching us would have thought we were managing the day as well as could be expected.

Only I could feel how stiff his arm had become beneath my hand.

When someone approached from behind, he turned quickly.

When a car door slammed in the parking area, he glanced toward the sound.

When I mentioned that we should wait for Theo before leaving, he looked at me as though I had suggested something unreasonable.

"Why?" he asked.

"Because he came for Jack."

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

"He can make his own way home."

The words were not cruel.

That almost made them worse.

They sounded practical, as if Theo were a distant acquaintance who had happened to attend the service.

I stared at my husband.

"He's not a stranger."

"I didn't say he was."

"Then why are you acting like he is?"

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Not today."

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell him that the day had already been difficult enough without his deciding which people belonged in it.

But I was tired.

I was so tired that even anger seemed to require more strength than I had left.

So I stopped.

That was something I did often in our marriage.

I stopped because the conversation seemed likely to become unpleasant.

I stopped because the timing wasn't right.

I stopped because I told myself there would be another chance.

Looking back, I can see how many things I left unsaid that way.

I don't know whether asking those questions earlier would have changed anything.

I only know that silence had become a habit, and habits can look like peace from a distance.

We waited near the cars.

People began leaving in small groups.

A few relatives asked whether we needed anything.

I said no.

Someone offered to bring food to the house.

I thanked her and told her we would be fine.

I had no idea what being fine was supposed to look like.

Then Theo came outside.

He had changed nothing.

The red dress was still there, bright against the gray pavement and the dark clothing of the people around him.

He paused near the chapel steps.

For a moment, I thought he might approach us.

Daniel turned toward the car.

I stayed where I was.

Theo noticed me watching.

His expression tightened.

I could see him considering something.

Then he walked in our direction.

Each step seemed to cost him effort.

When he reached us, he stopped a short distance away.

"I'm sorry I caused a scene," he said.

I didn't know how to answer.

Had he caused a scene?

Or had people decided that his presence meant there had to be one?

I looked at him.

"Why did you wear that?"

The question came out before I had time to soften it.

Theo lowered his eyes.

I waited.

He didn't answer immediately.

Behind me, Daniel opened the car door.

The sound seemed much louder than it should have been.

Theo glanced toward him, then back at me.

"I couldn't come dressed any other way."

I felt a small, sharp movement inside my chest.

"What does that mean?"

He swallowed.

"It means I couldn't."

That was all he said.

I wanted to ask him to explain.

I wanted to tell him that he couldn't expect us to understand something he refused to put into words.

But the look on his face stopped me.

He wasn't smiling.

He wasn't challenging me.

He looked as though he had arrived at the edge of something and didn't know how to take the next step.

I knew that expression.

I had seen it on Jack's face when he was young and had made a mistake he couldn't admit.

I had seen it when he wanted to ask for help but was afraid the answer would change how I saw him.

I had always believed that a mother could recognize those moments.

Now I wondered how many times I had failed to recognize them in time.

"Did Jack know?" I asked.

Theo looked at me.

For the first time, something like anger crossed his face.

Not anger at Jack.

Not even clearly anger at me.

It was brief, but it was there.

"Jack knew me," he said.

Then he stepped back.

I felt the words land between us.

They weren't an answer to my question.

They were something more personal.

Something I hadn't earned the right to dismiss.

Daniel came around the car.

"Let's go," he said.

I looked at Theo once more.

"I'll call you."

He gave a small nod.

I wasn't sure whether he believed me.

Then we left.

During the drive home, neither Daniel nor I spoke.

The road passed beneath the car in long, ordinary stretches.

People walked along the sidewalks.

A delivery truck stopped at an intersection.

A woman carried groceries toward a building.

The world had continued without asking our permission.

I watched it through the window and felt almost offended by its normality.

At home, the flowers from earlier in the week still stood near the front window.

Cards lay across the kitchen counter.

A half-finished cup of tea sat beside the sink.

I had forgotten about it.

The tea had gone cold.

I stood there staring at the cup while Daniel removed his jacket.

It was a small thing.

A cup left untouched.

A day that had gone on too long.

I began to cry.

Not loudly.

Not in the way people expect when they hear that someone has lost a child.

The tears simply came, and I couldn't stop them.

Daniel approached me.

For a moment, he stood behind me without speaking.

Then he placed his hand on my shoulder.

"We need to get through the next few days," he said.

I wiped my face.

"I know."

"We can't keep going over everything."

I turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

He sighed.

"It means we need some rest."

I wanted to tell him that I hadn't been asking him to explain the funeral.

I had been asking him to explain his reaction to Theo.

But I couldn't find a way to say it without starting another argument.

So I nodded.

Daniel went upstairs.

I stayed in the kitchen.

The house felt different without Jack.

His absence wasn't confined to his bedroom or the things he had left behind.

It seemed to have entered every room.

I noticed the chair he used to pull away from the table.

I noticed the place where he sometimes left his keys.

I noticed a small mark on the wall near the hallway that I had meant to clean for months.

Everything ordinary had become evidence of a life that had once been here.

I didn't know what to do with any of it.

That evening, I took out my phone and found Theo's number.

I stared at his name for a long time.

I could have called.

I could have asked him to come over.

I could have told him that I hadn't understood what he meant when he said he couldn't come dressed any other way.

Instead, I typed a short message.

I was glad you came today.

I read it twice.

It sounded inadequate.

I sent it anyway.

A few minutes passed.

Then the screen lit up.

Thank you.

Nothing else.

I waited for another message.

It didn't come.

I put the phone down.

I told myself he was grieving too.

I told myself he needed time.

I told myself that the dress had been a personal choice and that I had no right to demand an explanation.

All of those things could have been true.

But I still remembered his words.

Jack knew me.

There had been something in the way he said them that made me think the dress wasn't simply a piece of clothing.

It meant something to him.

Perhaps it meant something to Jack too.

I couldn't know.

The following morning, I tried to return to ordinary tasks.

I washed the dishes.

I folded the clothes in the laundry basket.

I opened the refrigerator and stood in front of it without knowing what I wanted.

Every task seemed ridiculous.

The dishes would get dirty again.

The clothes would need washing again.

Food would be eaten and replaced.

Life was made of repeated actions, and I had lost the person who made so many of those actions feel worthwhile.

I found myself thinking about Theo again.

I remembered how he had looked at the coffin.

I remembered his hand moving to his cheek.

I remembered the way he had said he couldn't come dressed any other way.

I had been so focused on the color that I hadn't asked the most important question.

What had wearing that dress cost him?

Had he known people would stare?

Had he expected the whispers?

Had he come anyway because staying away would have hurt more?

I didn't have the answers.

But for the first time, I began to wonder whether my embarrassment had been misplaced.

The dress had made me uncomfortable.

That was true.

It had also made me curious.

And curiosity, when it concerns someone else's pain, can become a kind of selfishness if you only want an answer to make yourself feel better.

I didn't want to do that to Theo.

I wanted to understand.

I wasn't sure I knew how.

Later that afternoon, Daniel came downstairs and found me sitting at the kitchen table.

My phone lay beside the cold cup of tea I had reheated and forgotten to drink.

He looked at it.

"Have you spoken to Theo?"

"No."

"Good."

I stared at him.

"Why is that good?"

Daniel pulled out a chair but didn't sit.

"Because we don't need more complications right now."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What complications?"

He looked away.

"The whole thing was difficult enough."

I thought about the people whispering in the chapel.

I thought about Theo's face.

I thought about my husband refusing to look at him.

"You keep talking as if he did something wrong."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I didn't say that."

"You don't have to."

He stood still for a moment.

Then he sat down.

"We've just buried our son," he said.

His voice was quieter now.

"I don't have the energy for this."

I looked at him across the table.

Neither did I.

That was what made the conversation so difficult.

I was exhausted, grieving, and afraid of the answers I might find.

Daniel was grieving too.

I knew that.

But his grief seemed to come with a list of subjects we were not supposed to discuss.

Theo was becoming one of them.

I lowered my eyes.

"All right."

Daniel reached for my hand.

I let him take it.

We sat together for a while without speaking.

From the outside, we might have looked like two parents trying to survive the worst day of their lives.

That was what we were.

But beneath that shared sorrow, something else had begun.

A question.

A small one, at first.

Why had Theo worn red?

I could have left it there.

I could have accepted that I didn't understand every choice another person made.

But I had seen Daniel's face when Theo entered the chapel.

I had heard the way my husband answered me.

And I had watched Theo leave without explaining himself.

I didn't know what any of it meant.

I only knew that the question no longer belonged to the funeral alone.

It had followed us home.

<a
