17 – I Had Stopped Trying to Earn My Place in Benjamin’s Life, but I Still Had to Decide What I Would Do If He Asked Me for Money Again

The next time Benjamin called, I was in the kitchen preparing lunch.

I had potatoes on the counter and a saucepan waiting on the stove.

My hands were damp from washing vegetables, so I dried them before answering.

"Hi, Mom."

His voice sounded familiar.

For a moment, I felt the old relief that always came when I heard him.

I was glad he had called.

I did not need to pretend otherwise.

We talked about ordinary things for several minutes.

He asked how I had been spending my time.

I told him I had been reading more and working in the garden.

He asked whether I was feeling well.

I said I was.

Then he mentioned that he was still trying to sort out his expenses.

I stopped cutting the potatoes.

There it was again.

The subject that had shaped so many of our conversations during the past year.

I put the knife down and listened.

Benjamin explained that he was trying to make several things work at once.

I did not interrupt him.

I knew what it was like to feel overwhelmed by responsibilities.

I also knew how quickly I could slip into the old habit of trying to remove every difficulty from his path.

I let him finish.

Then I asked what he thought he could manage himself.

He was quiet for a moment.

He said he was working on it.

I told him I hoped he would find a way forward.

The silence that followed felt familiar.

I could almost hear the offer I would once have made.

I could have asked how much he needed.

I could have told him to send me the details.

I could have started calculating what I could spare before he had even finished explaining the problem.

But I had made a promise to myself.

I would consider any request carefully.

I would not make a decision simply because I wanted the conversation to end comfortably.

Benjamin did not ask for a specific amount.

We talked for another minute, then said goodbye.

I returned to the potatoes.

The saucepan was still waiting.

The kitchen smelled of fresh vegetables and the soap I had used to wash my hands.

I finished preparing lunch.

While I ate, I thought about the call.

I wondered whether Benjamin had expected me to offer money.

I wondered whether he had been disappointed when I did not.

Then I stopped myself.

I could not know what he had expected.

I had spent too many years trying to read his silences as though they were questions I was responsible for answering.

He was allowed to be disappointed.

I was allowed to make a careful decision.

Those things could exist together.

That afternoon, I opened my notebook.

The yearly total was still written on its page.

$93,600.

I looked at the number without reaching for the calculator.

I knew it was accurate.

I had checked the records enough times.

I did not need to punish myself by proving it again.

Instead, I thought about the person I had been when I made those payments.

I had believed I was helping my son through a difficult period.

I had wanted to give him room to recover without feeling ashamed.

I had not wanted him to worry about how I was managing.

I had hidden my own concerns because I thought they would make his situation harder.

At the time, that had seemed like love.

Now I could see that I had left very little room for honesty.

I had made myself look more comfortable than I was.

I had offered reassurance before considering the cost.

I had acted as though my resources were endless because I did not want Benjamin to feel that he was asking too much.

But the money had come from somewhere.

It had come from years of work and careful saving.

It had come from decisions I had made when I was younger and from sacrifices I had accepted because I wanted to remain independent in old age.

I could not keep treating those savings as though they belonged to someone else.

I closed the notebook.

I was not angry with Benjamin every time I looked at the total.

Sometimes I was angry with myself.

Sometimes I was simply sad.

And sometimes I could accept that I had made the best decisions I knew how to make at the time, even if I would make them differently now.

That afternoon, I went for a walk.

I moved slowly and took the route I knew well.

I did not bring my phone in my hand.

I carried it in my pocket and left it there.

When I returned home, I watered the plants and put away the things I had left on the counter.

The rest of the day passed quietly.

I began to understand that my life did not have to be organized around Benjamin's next request.

I could answer him when he called.

I could listen when he wanted to talk.

I could love him without making myself responsible for every problem he faced.

That evening, I took the navy dress from the closet and examined it again.

I had not worn it since the dinner that never happened.

The fabric was smooth now.

I ran my hand over the front and remembered how carefully I had prepared that evening.

I had wanted to look nice.

I had wanted to share a meal with my son.

I had wanted to feel welcome.

Those were ordinary wishes.

I did not need to be ashamed of them.

I hung the dress back in the closet.

I was not ready to wear it yet, but I no longer wanted to treat it as a reminder of my own foolishness.

The foolishness had not been in wanting to see my son.

It had been in believing that I could secure a place in his life by making myself endlessly useful.

I could not do that.

No amount of money could guarantee it.

I turned off the bedroom light and went to bed.

I still hoped Benjamin and I would find a better way to relate to each other.

But I was no longer willing to make my financial security the price of keeping that hope alive.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: I Had Learned to Say That I Needed Time, but I Still Wondered Whether My Son
