14 – I Had Always Believed That Giving My Son More Time Would Make Things Easier, Until I Realized Time Alone Could Not Change Our Habits

Over the next several days, Benjamin and I spoke briefly a few times.

The conversations were polite.

He asked how I was doing.

I asked how he was managing.

Sometimes we talked about ordinary things.

Sometimes the conversation ended after only a few minutes.

I did not try to force every call into a discussion about the dinner.

I had said what I needed to say.

I wanted to give him room to think.

But I also wanted to stop using patience as a reason to ignore what had happened.

Those two intentions were difficult to balance.

For most of my life, I had believed that if I waited long enough, difficult feelings would settle on their own.

Sometimes they did.

A disagreement would fade.

An apology would arrive.

People would return to their ordinary routines, and the hurt would become less sharp.

But sometimes the problem remained beneath the surface.

Everyone behaved as though things were fine because no one wanted to be the first to speak.

I had done that with Benjamin more times than I could count.

I had let careless remarks pass.

I had accepted explanations that did not quite answer my questions.

I had offered help when what I really wanted was reassurance.

Then I wondered why I sometimes felt lonely even after a conversation with my own son.

I was beginning to see that time could soften hurt, but it could not replace honesty.

One afternoon, I was sorting papers in my desk when I came across an old envelope containing household receipts.

I sat down and began organizing them.

The work was familiar.

I had always kept records because I liked knowing where things stood.

I did not enjoy uncertainty when it came to money.

Yet with Benjamin, I had allowed uncertainty to remain because asking too many questions felt unkind.

I had told myself that he was already dealing with enough.

I did not want to make him feel worse.

That had been my reasoning.

But I had begun to understand that there was a difference between treating someone with kindness and avoiding every question that might make them uncomfortable.

I could have asked more questions.

I could have taken longer to consider the payments.

I could have been honest about what I could afford.

None of those things would have made me less of a mother.

I finished sorting the receipts and placed them in their folder.

Then I closed the desk drawer.

I wanted to spend the rest of the afternoon doing something that had nothing to do with money.

I took a book outside and sat in the garden.

I read for nearly an hour.

At one point, I heard the telephone ringing inside the house.

I put my bookmark between the pages and went to answer it.

It was Benjamin.

He asked whether I had been busy.

I told him I had been reading outside.

He sounded surprised.

I explained that I was trying to spend more time in the garden.

He said that was good.

We talked briefly.

Then he mentioned that he was still trying to organize his expenses.

I listened.

I could hear the familiar uncertainty in his voice.

In the past, that would have been enough to make me start offering suggestions or asking how much money he needed.

This time, I waited for him to finish.

He did not make a specific request.

He only spoke about the difficulty of getting everything sorted out.

I told him I hoped he would find a way forward.

He thanked me.

Then the conversation slowed.

I wondered whether he was waiting for me to offer something.

I could not know.

I had become so accustomed to filling those pauses with help that I had started to assume every silence meant a request was coming.

That was not fair to either of us.

Perhaps he was simply thinking.

Perhaps he did not know what to say.

I let the pause remain.

Eventually, he said he had to go.

I told him to take care.

When the call ended, I stood in the kitchen and looked at the phone.

I felt the old urge to call him back.

I wanted to make sure he knew I was still there.

I wanted to explain that I had not stopped caring about him.

But I had already said those things.

Repeating them every time a conversation became uncomfortable would not make them more true.

I returned to the garden.

The book was still open where I had left it.

I sat down and continued reading.

It took a few minutes to find my place in the story.

Then I became absorbed in it.

That evening, I thought about how much of my life had been spent trying to prevent other people from feeling disappointed.

I had wanted to be dependable.

I had wanted to be the person who could be counted on.

There was nothing wrong with those wishes.

The problem was that I had gradually begun to believe I must always be available, always agreeable, and always prepared to help.

I had made it difficult for myself to say no.

I had also made it difficult for Benjamin to know where my limits were.

He might have believed I was comfortable with the arrangement because I had rarely said otherwise.

I could not know what he believed.

But I could see that I had not been clear.

I could change that now.

I could tell him what I could afford.

I could ask questions.

I could take time before making a decision.

And I could stop interpreting every disappointment as evidence that I was failing him.

I did not have to become hard or suspicious.

I only had to become more honest.

The next morning, I took the notebook out of the drawer.

I turned to the page with the annual total.

For a moment, I considered adding a note about the changes I wanted to make.

Then I decided not to.

I did not want to keep turning the notebook into a record of my feelings.

The number already told me enough about the financial choices I had made.

I closed it and returned it to its place.

I made breakfast.

I washed the dishes.

I opened the window above the sink and let in the cool air.

The day ahead was ordinary.

I had no urgent decision to make.

No one was waiting for me to solve a problem.

I could simply get on with my life.

That thought gave me a quiet kind of relief.

I had spent years believing that a good mother should always be ready to give more.

Now I was learning that being dependable did not mean being limitless.

And being patient did not mean waiting forever for someone else to decide whether my feelings mattered.
