he said.

"Hello, sweetheart."

He asked how I was feeling.

I told him I was well.

He asked whether I had been out.

I said I had taken a walk and done some shopping.

We talked about ordinary things for a while.

I found myself enjoying the conversation.

There was no argument.

No raised voice.

No difficult question.

For a few minutes, we sounded like a mother and son who had nothing to prove to each other.

Then he began talking about his expenses again.

I listened.

I asked questions when I did not understand something.

I did not interrupt him to offer solutions.

I also did not reach for the notebook.

When he finished, I told him I hoped he could work things out.

He thanked me, but his voice had changed slightly.

I could hear the disappointment even though he did not name it.

I felt it immediately.

The old instinct returned.

I could have made the discomfort disappear by offering to pay something.

I knew that.

A promise of money would have changed the tone of the conversation in seconds.

Instead, I took a breath.

"Have you looked at what you can handle yourself?" I asked.

He said he was still considering his options.

I told him I understood.

Then I let the silence remain.

It was uncomfortable.

I wanted to fill it.

I wanted to tell him that I was still here, that I loved him, and that he could always talk to me.

But I was beginning to understand that those things did not need to be proven with a transfer.

"I'll figure it out," he said eventually.

"I hope you do."

We ended the call shortly afterward.

I stood in the kitchen for a moment, holding the phone.

I felt guilty.

That was the word for it.

I felt guilty for not offering something I had not been asked to give.

It made no sense, but feelings do not always follow logic.

I returned to the bedroom and finished folding the laundry.

The towels went into the cupboard.

The shirts went onto their hangers.

I completed every task I had started before the call.

By the time I finished, the guilt had softened.

It had not disappeared.

But it no longer felt like an instruction.

That evening, I took the notebook out again.

I opened it to the page with the total.

I did not need to check the figures.

I wanted to remind myself why I had started changing my behavior.

The money was part of it.

My future mattered.

I needed enough savings to manage my own life, including the unexpected expenses that came with growing older.

I could not assume that I would remain healthy or that every year would be as manageable as the one before.

But the money was not the only issue.

I wanted to stop feeling that I had to earn a place in my son's life.

I wanted to be able to say no without imagining that I would lose him.

I wanted to have a conversation with Benjamin that did not gradually turn into a discussion about what I could pay.

I wanted those things, even if I did not yet know whether they were possible.

I closed the notebook.

Then I sat for a while, looking at the kitchen window.

The glass reflected the room behind me.

The table.

The chairs.

The familiar cupboards.

My own outline in the dim light.

I had spent years caring for this house.

I had built a life here, one ordinary day at a time.

It had never been a grand life.

But it was mine.

I did not want to reach a point where I could no longer afford to maintain it because I had been too afraid to disappoint my son.

That thought frightened me more than I expected.

I put the notebook away.

The next morning, I made breakfast and ate without checking my phone.

I washed the dishes and wiped the counter.

Then I went through the mail.

A bill needed attention, so I paid it and put the receipt with my records.

The transaction took only a few minutes.

Still, I found myself thinking about the difference between paying my own expenses and covering someone else's.

My own bills were predictable.

I knew why I was paying them.

I understood what they meant for my household.

The money I had given Benjamin had been different.

I had often sent it before I had fully considered how it affected my plans.

I had treated each request as though it existed on its own.

I had not given myself enough time to think.

That was going to change.

I could still help him when I genuinely wanted to and when I could afford to do so.

But I would make that choice deliberately.

I would not make it because silence frightened me.

I would not make it because I felt guilty.

And I would not make it because I hoped the next payment would somehow restore the closeness I had been missing.

Those were promises I could make to myself.

Keeping them would take time.

I knew that.

I also knew that the first few steps were already behind me.

I had paused before offering money.

I had allowed Benjamin to manage his own discomfort.

I had resisted the urge to turn every conversation into an opportunity to prove my love.

None of those actions had solved our relationship.

But they had begun to change mine with myself.

For the first time in a long while, I was trying to be as considerate of my own future as I had always been of my son's.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Expected an Apology for the Dinner Message, but What I Needed Most Was to Understand Why I Had Been Afraid to Ask for One

Over the following days, I tried to keep the promise I had made to myself.
