2 – The Maid Tried to Hide Her Tears While the Richest Guests Watched a Child Walk Away From Everything They Expected

For a few seconds, nobody seemed to know what to do.

Noah continued toward the entrance.

His little shoes made faint sounds against the marble floor.

The orchestra was still playing, but the music suddenly seemed out of place.

I watched Alexander standing beside the altar.

He didn't call his son back.

He didn't tell him to stop.

He simply followed him with his eyes.

That surprised me.

I had expected a man like Alexander Sterling to control the situation immediately.

He was accustomed to making decisions.

He was accustomed to having people follow instructions.

Yet his son was walking away from the most carefully arranged moment of the evening, and Alexander remained still.

The maid noticed Noah approaching.

She lifted her head.

For an instant, she looked almost frightened.

Then she glanced toward the women waiting near the altar and seemed to understand what was happening.

Her grip tightened around the tray.

"No, sweetheart," she murmured.

It was barely loud enough for anyone nearby to hear.

Noah kept walking.

She shifted her weight and looked toward the side of the ballroom, as though she were searching for a way to leave without causing a disturbance.

There wasn't one.

Guests stood along the aisle.

Waiters moved near the walls.

The entrance was behind her, but stepping through it would have required her to pass Noah.

She lowered her eyes again.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

She wiped it away quickly.

I saw it.

So did Noah.

He stopped a short distance from her.

The entire ballroom seemed to be holding its breath.

The maid stared at him as if she couldn't understand why he had come over.

He looked small beside her.

His cream-colored jacket was immaculate, and his hair was still neatly combed.

She, by comparison, looked like someone who had spent the evening trying to disappear.

Noah tilted his head.

"Why are you crying?"

The question was simple.

There was no accusation in it.

Noah sounded concerned.

The maid opened her mouth, then closed it again.

"I'm all right."

She tried to smile.

It didn't work.

Noah studied her face.

Children often notice things adults have learned to ignore.

They see a trembling hand.

A forced smile.

A person who says everything is fine while clearly struggling to hold themselves together.

Noah seemed to notice all of it.

He took one more step toward her.

Behind him, one of the women shifted impatiently.

Another leaned toward her companion and whispered something I couldn't hear.

Their attention was no longer on one another.

It was on the child who had walked away from them.

And on the maid who appeared to have done nothing to attract him.

The maid lowered the tray slightly.

"You should go back to your father."

Noah didn't turn around.

Instead, he looked at the silver tray.

There were glasses arranged neatly across its surface.

One had a small amount of water left in it.

Another caught the light from the chandeliers.

He looked at those glasses for a moment, then raised his eyes to the maid again.

"Are you sad?"

She swallowed.

"No."

It was a poor answer.

We all knew it.

She knew it too.

Her lips pressed together, and she looked away before another tear could fall.

Noah didn't seem satisfied.

He stood quietly in front of her, waiting.

The maid had probably spent years learning how to behave around people with money.

She knew when to speak.

When to remain silent.

When to step aside.

And when to pretend she hadn't heard something that might embarrass the people paying her wages.

But a five-year-old boy wasn't following any of those rules.

He wasn't interested in the right way to approach her.

He had seen that she was crying.

That was enough.

Alexander finally moved away from the altar.

He walked down the aisle at an unhurried pace.

People immediately made room for him.

Some guests looked relieved, apparently expecting him to guide Noah back toward the ceremony.

Others watched with open curiosity.

The three women remained where they were.

Their elegant gowns seemed suddenly less important.

Alexander stopped several steps behind his son.

"Noah."

The boy looked back.

His father didn't raise his voice.

"Come here for a moment."

Noah glanced at the maid.

Then he looked at Alexander again.

He didn't move.

It was a small refusal.

No shouting.

No tears.

No dramatic gesture.

But I saw Alexander's jaw tighten.

For the first time, the situation wasn't going according to the plan everyone had accepted.

The maid looked between father and son.

She seemed desperate to avoid becoming the reason for a disagreement.

"Please," she said quietly to Noah. "Your father is waiting."

The boy finally turned toward Alexander.

"She's crying."

Alexander looked at the maid.

She immediately lowered her head.

"I'm sorry, sir."

She spoke quickly, as if apologizing could make the moment disappear.

"I didn't mean to disturb anything."

Alexander said nothing.

The maid adjusted her grip on the tray.

Her fingers were pressed so tightly against its edge that her knuckles had turned pale.

"I can return to the service area."

She started to step away.

Noah moved closer to her.

Not aggressively.

He simply positioned himself between her and the direction she had been heading.

It was the sort of thing a child might do without thinking.

But it stopped her.

"Don't go."

His voice was soft.

The maid stared at him.

Then she looked at Alexander, apparently hoping he would explain that the boy had misunderstood something.

Alexander didn't.

He watched his son with an expression I couldn't read.

I wondered whether he was embarrassed.

Perhaps he was angry.

Or perhaps he was seeing something in Noah's behavior that the rest of us had missed.

The boy had lost his mother three years earlier.

He had grown up surrounded by people who could give him almost anything money could buy.

Fine clothes.

Beautiful rooms.

Expensive toys.

The best education his father could arrange.

But none of those things could make him stop missing the woman who had died.

Maybe he had learned that a person could be surrounded by people and still feel alone.

Maybe that was why the maid's tears mattered to him.

I couldn't know for certain.

I only knew that he had noticed her when everyone else had been watching the women beside the altar.

One of the guests cleared his throat.

The sound was too loud in the silence.

A woman near the front leaned toward her husband.

"What's happening?"

He didn't answer.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak plainly about what they were witnessing.

The three women were still waiting.

Their smiles had become strained, and their hands were no longer held out in welcome.

The maid remained frozen near the doors, holding her tray.

Noah stood beside her.

Alexander stood a few feet away.

It should have been a simple moment.

A father calling his child back.

A child obeying.

A maid returning to her duties.

Instead, everyone was waiting to discover what Alexander would do.

He looked at the women near the altar.

Then he looked at his son.

Finally, he turned his attention to the maid again.

"What's your name?"

The maid seemed surprised by the question.

She straightened immediately.

"Anna, sir."

Her voice was unsteady.

Alexander gave a small nod.

"And why are you upset, Anna?"

She looked down at the tray.

"I'd rather not discuss it here."

There was no disrespect in her answer.

If anything, she sounded frightened that she had said too much.

Alexander studied her for a moment.

Then he glanced toward Noah.

The boy was still watching her face.

He didn't seem interested in the wedding anymore.

He didn't seem interested in the three women or the people whispering behind them.

He was waiting for Anna to stop looking so sad.

That was all.

Or at least, that was how it appeared to me.

The maid took a careful breath.

"I'm sorry for the interruption."

Alexander's expression remained controlled.

"You haven't interrupted anything."

Several people shifted at those words.

The women near the altar exchanged another glance.

The guests who had been eager to watch the selection now seemed unsure whether they were witnessing one at all.

Noah looked up at his father.

"Can I stay with her?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

The question hung between them.

I remember thinking that it was an odd thing to ask when three women were waiting to be chosen as his future mother.

But perhaps the question wasn't odd to Noah.

Perhaps he wasn't thinking about marriage.

Perhaps he had simply found someone who looked unhappy and wanted to remain beside her.

Children don't always separate affection from duty the way adults do.

They don't necessarily care whether someone belongs to a wealthy family or works behind the scenes.

They care about what they can see.

Anna was crying.

Noah had noticed.

And now he didn't want to leave her alone.

Alexander looked down at his son.

Then, slowly, he bent his knees and brought himself closer to the boy's eye level.

"Noah, tell me something."

The child waited.

"Do you know why those women are here tonight?"

Noah glanced toward the altar.

For the first time since he had approached Anna, he seemed uncertain.

He looked at the three women.

Then at his father.

"I know they're waiting."

Alexander nodded.

"And do you understand what they're waiting for?"

Noah thought about it.

Then he shook his head.

The answer seemed to affect Alexander more than I expected.

He looked at the altar again.

The flowers were still arranged perfectly.

The lights still shone against the marble.

The women still wore their expensive gowns.

But the simple explanation that had made the evening seem reasonable no longer felt quite so simple.

Noah wasn't thinking about which woman looked the most beautiful.

He wasn't weighing the advantages of one wealthy household against another.

He was standing beside a crying maid.

And he wanted to stay.

Alexander remained crouched in front of him.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Noah reached for Anna's free hand.

She looked down at his small fingers.

Her eyes filled again.

This time, she didn't turn away quickly enough to hide it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Alexander Sterling Had Built His Life Around
