18 – When Victor Finally Began Sorting Through the Questions He Had Been Afraid to Ask, I Understood Why His Trust Had Been So Difficult to Lose

I called Victor the next morning.

He answered after a few rings.

His voice sounded tired, but he was glad to hear from me.

I asked whether he felt up to looking at the paperwork.

He said he thought he could manage a little at a time.

I told him there was no rush.

When I arrived, the house was quiet.

The same papers were near his chair.

Some had been placed in a folder, while others remained in envelopes.

Victor looked at the pile and gave a small, embarrassed smile.

“I haven't done much with it.”

I told him that was all right.

We didn't need to finish everything in one sitting.

I sat beside him and asked him to show me what he wanted to review.

He began with the financial statements he had already mentioned.

We looked at the entries he remembered and the ones he didn't.

I was careful not to assume that an unfamiliar transaction meant something improper.

A record could be confusing for many reasons.

But I also refused to dismiss an entry simply because someone might find it inconvenient to explain.

Victor deserved to know what had happened.

We worked slowly.

Every so often, he stopped to rest.

I waited until he was ready to continue.

The process was not dramatic.

There was no single paper that immediately explained everything.

There were only records that needed attention and questions that remained unanswered.

I began to understand why Victor had found the situation so exhausting.

He was trying to make sense of complicated financial information while dealing with an illness that had already taken much of his energy.

He was also trying to decide whether he could trust the people who had been helping him.

That second problem seemed harder than the first.

At one point, he put a statement down and rubbed his forehead.

“I used to know exactly where everything stood.”

I told him that he didn't have to understand every detail immediately.

He nodded.

Then he looked at the papers again.

“I just don't want someone making decisions for me because they think I can't manage anymore.”

I understood.

He wasn't insisting that he do everything alone.

He was asking not to be pushed aside.

There was a difference.

A person could need assistance and still deserve to know what was being done on their behalf.

A person could accept help without surrendering every decision.

And a person could be seriously ill without losing the right to question what happened to their money.

We continued until Victor became too tired to go on.

I put the papers back in the folder and asked whether he wanted me to return another time.

“Yes.”

He sounded relieved that I had offered.

Then he hesitated.

“I don't want this to cause a fight between you and Brady.”

I felt a familiar sadness.

Even now, Victor was worrying about the consequences for everyone else.

I told him I would be careful.

I would not accuse anyone without evidence.

I would not turn questions into conclusions.

But I would not pretend his concerns were meaningless.

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

I could see that he wanted to believe me.

I also understood why belief might not come easily.

He had trusted people before.

He had accepted help because he believed it was offered in good faith.

Now he was trying to find a way to protect himself without destroying the relationships he still valued.

I couldn't make that choice for him.

I could only respect it.

Before I left, he asked me to keep the folder where we had placed it.

He wanted to continue reviewing the records when he had more energy.

I agreed.

As I stood near the door, I looked back at him.

He seemed smaller than I remembered, though I knew it was not his size that had changed.

It was the amount of effort required for ordinary things.

I thought about the years he had spent making life easier for Brady.

I thought about how easily a person could become accustomed to receiving help without thinking about the cost to the person providing it.

And I thought about how painful it must be to discover that the support you once gave freely was not being returned when you needed it.

I didn't know what the financial records would eventually reveal.

I still had no clear answer about the document Elaine had suggested.

I couldn't tell whether the discrepancies had one explanation or several.

Those questions remained open.

But something had changed.

Victor was no longer carrying every question alone.

He had agreed to examine the records instead of simply accepting that he was too confused to understand them.

It was not a solution.

It was a beginning.

On the drive home, I felt both relieved and worried.

I was relieved that Victor had trusted me enough to continue.

I was worried because the family still had not addressed the central problem.

Brady had not given me a clear account of what he knew.

Elaine had not explained the financial arrangements to my satisfaction.

And Victor was still the person expected to live with the uncertainty.

I knew I would have to keep my judgment careful.

But I also knew that careful judgment did not require silence.

It required honesty about what we knew and patience about what we didn't.

That was what I intended to give Victor.

<a
