16 – When Thanksgiving Finally Arrived, I Could No Longer Hide Behind the Hope That Someone Else Would Notice How Much Victor Needed Them

Thanksgiving came with the same expectations it always had.

People made plans.

They talked about food and travel.

They assumed the holiday would unfold as they had imagined it.

But I could not think about the day without thinking about Victor.

His illness had changed the meaning of everything.

A visit was no longer just a visit.

A phone call was no longer merely a courtesy.

The decision to be present or absent carried a weight that it might not have carried in another year.

I knew Brady and Elaine intended to go on their cruise.

I knew Brady believed the arrangements for his father were sufficient.

I also knew Victor had been left with unanswered questions about his finances and uncertainty about the people he depended on.

I could not make those facts disappear.

That morning, I thought about calling Victor before doing anything else.

I wanted to hear his voice.

I wanted to know how he was feeling.

Most of all, I wanted him to know that I had not forgotten him.

I picked up my phone, then hesitated.

I worried that another call might remind him of everything he was missing.

I worried that he would try to reassure me rather than tell me how he felt.

Then I remembered how often I had allowed my fear of an uncomfortable conversation to keep me silent.

I called.

Victor answered, and we spoke for a little while.

He sounded tired.

He told me he was taking things slowly.

I asked whether he needed anything.

He said he would manage.

I had heard those words too many times to accept them as a complete answer.

“I'm asking because I want to know what would help.”

He paused.

For a moment, I thought he might tell me something he had been holding back.

Instead, he said he appreciated the call.

I understood.

He might not have wanted to ask for more.

He might not have known what to request.

Or he might simply have been too tired to explain.

I didn't force him to choose an answer.

We talked about ordinary things for a few minutes.

Then I told him I would check in again.

He thanked me before we hung up.

I sat quietly afterward.

I was glad I had called.

I was also aware that a phone call was not the same as being present.

It could offer comfort.

It could remind someone they were remembered.

But it could not replace the practical support a sick person might need.

That was why the family's decision troubled me so much.

Victor needed more than a brief reassurance that everything would be fine.

He needed people willing to understand his condition and respond to it.

I thought about Brady.

I wondered whether he had considered what the holiday would feel like from his father's perspective.

I wondered whether he understood how much Victor had hoped for his attention.

I still wanted to believe that some part of Brady would recognize the importance of being there.

But I couldn't make my choices depend on that hope.

I had spent too long waiting for him to become more thoughtful without asking him to confront what he was doing.

I could no longer pretend that my silence was neutral.

It had helped keep the family comfortable.

It had not made Victor's life easier.

I thought about the papers near his chair and the questions we still could not answer.

I thought about the document Elaine had proposed.

I thought about the money Victor said had disappeared from his accounts and the bills that continued arriving.

I did not know what those details would eventually mean.

I refused to invent an answer simply because uncertainty was difficult to bear.

But I knew the questions mattered.

Victor's illness did not make his financial concerns irrelevant.

His age did not make his judgment worthless.

His need for help did not give anyone permission to keep him uninformed.

I wanted him to have the chance to understand what was happening around him.

And I wanted the people closest to him to recognize that caring for someone meant respecting his decisions, not simply making arrangements and expecting him to accept them.

As the day continued, I found myself thinking about the word family again.

I had once believed that being family guaranteed a certain level of care.

I had assumed that when circumstances became serious enough, people would set aside their differences and do what needed to be done.

Now I understood that family ties did not automatically produce kindness.

People still had to choose it.

They had to choose patience when impatience would be easier.

They had to choose honesty when an explanation might lead to an argument.

They had to choose presence when leaving would be more convenient.

Victor had spent years making those choices for his son.

Now the question was whether Brady would make them for his father.

I couldn't answer that for him.

I could only decide what kind of person I wanted to be while he made his choice.

I would not dismiss Victor's concerns.

I would not tell him to accept uncertainty just to keep the family calm.

And I would not pretend that his need for care was something he should feel ashamed of.

I knew those decisions would not resolve everything.

But they were decisions I could make without anyone else's permission.

For the first time in a long while, that felt like enough to begin.
