12 – The Closer Thanksgiving Came, the Harder It Became to Pretend That Victor’s Care Was Settled Simply Because Brady Said It Was

Thanksgiving was almost upon us, and the family still had not resolved the concerns Victor had shared with me.

I tried to focus on what I could do rather than what I wished everyone else would do.

I checked in with Victor.

I listened when he spoke about his health.

I asked whether he needed help with anything practical.

And when he mentioned the financial paperwork, I reminded him that we could look through it together when he felt ready.

I didn't want to make his illness the only subject of our conversations.

He was still a person with ordinary interests and memories.

He still deserved conversations that were not entirely about problems.

Sometimes we talked about simple things.

Those moments mattered to me.

They reminded me that Victor was more than a patient or a collection of responsibilities.

He was a man who had spent years caring for his family and who now needed some of that care returned.

I wanted him to feel that he still had a place in the family.

Not because he could provide something.

Not because he was easy to look after.

Because he mattered.

Brady, however, seemed determined to treat the holiday as a settled matter.

Whenever I asked about Victor, he returned to the same answer.

His father would be fine.

Someone would be available.

The arrangements had been made.

But he never seemed willing to discuss the details for long.

I found that increasingly difficult to accept.

If everything was truly in order, why was it so hard to explain?

I didn't ask that question every time.

I knew the conversation would probably end with Brady accusing me of questioning him.

But I stopped treating his irritation as proof that I was wrong.

I had begun to understand how often I let his reactions determine whether I trusted my own judgment.

That was something I needed to change.

One evening, I asked whether he had checked on Victor's financial concerns again.

Brady looked exhausted by the question.

“I thought we were done talking about this.”

I told him I wasn't trying to start an argument.

I wanted to know whether his father had received any answers.

He said Victor needed to stop worrying so much.

I felt a wave of frustration.

“Wouldn't it be better to check the records?”

Brady didn't respond directly.

He said there were more important things to worry about.

I thought about the unpaid bills.

I thought about the withdrawals Victor couldn't remember authorizing.

I thought about the paperwork Elaine had suggested.

Those things were important because they affected Victor's life.

They didn't become less important because Brady didn't want to discuss them.

I said so.

Brady's expression hardened.

He told me I was making assumptions about people I didn't understand.

I answered that I wasn't assuming anything about what had happened.

I was asking for the facts to be examined.

That distinction seemed to make little difference to him.

He ended the conversation by saying he had other things to do.

I watched him walk away.

For a moment, I felt the old instinct to follow him and smooth things over.

I wanted our home to feel calm.

I wanted to believe we could disagree without letting the disagreement change everything between us.

But I also knew that I had spent too much time protecting the appearance of harmony.

I could not keep doing that at Victor's expense.

Later, I called Victor.

I didn't tell him about the argument.

I asked how he was feeling and whether he wanted company.

He said he was tired, but he appreciated the call.

Then he asked whether Brady was upset with him.

The question caught me off guard.

I asked why he thought that.

Victor said he didn't want his concerns to become a problem for his son.

I felt something inside me sink.

Even now, he was trying to protect Brady from the consequences of his own behavior.

I told Victor that asking questions about his finances was not a wrongdoing.

He didn't need to apologize for wanting to understand his own affairs.

He was quiet for a while.

Then he thanked me.

I wished he didn't feel the need to thank me for something so basic.

I wished the people around him had made it clear from the beginning that his concerns mattered.

After we ended the call, I sat quietly for several minutes.

I had no proof that anyone had acted dishonestly.

I would not invent certainty where there was none.

But I no longer believed that the absence of proof meant there was nothing to worry about.

The questions remained unanswered.

Victor remained ill.

And the people who had the greatest responsibility to support him seemed unwilling to face the discomfort of examining what he had told them.

Thanksgiving had always meant gathering together and recognizing what we had been given.

This year, I found myself thinking about what people owed one another when circumstances became difficult.

Not money.

Not favors.

Not grand declarations of love.

Attention.

Honesty.

The willingness to remain present when someone else's needs interrupted your plans.

Victor deserved those things.

I could not force Brady to provide them.

But I could stop pretending that his father's situation was settled simply because my husband wanted it to be.

As the holiday approached, I made one decision I knew I could keep.

I would not dismiss Victor's concerns.

I would not tell him to be grateful for whatever help he received.

And I would not confuse silence with proof that he was being cared for.

Whatever happened next, I wanted him to know that at least one person in his family was willing to listen.

<a
