11 – I Wanted to Believe the Family Had Made Sensible Arrangements for Victor, Until I Considered Who Had Been Making Those Arrangements

After I learned about the cruise, I found myself thinking about Victor more often.

I wondered whether he was frightened.

I wondered whether he was angry.

Mostly, I wondered whether he had reached the point where disappointment had become so familiar that he no longer expected anything different.

That possibility troubled me.

People sometimes mistake quiet acceptance for contentment.

They see someone who doesn't complain and assume the situation must be manageable.

They forget that a person can stop complaining because experience has taught them that no one is listening.

I didn't want to make that mistake with Victor.

When I next spoke with him, I asked how he was feeling about the holiday.

He took a moment before answering.

“I suppose everyone has their own plans.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm, perhaps.

I asked whether he had spoken with Brady about what help he might need.

Victor said they had discussed the arrangements.

He didn't go into detail.

I didn't push him.

I knew he was trying to preserve his dignity.

He didn't want to sound as though he were begging his son to stay.

He didn't want to be the reason other people changed their plans.

And he didn't want another conversation in which his needs became a source of tension.

I understood all of that.

But I also knew that his reluctance to complain could leave important questions unanswered.

“Are you comfortable with what's been arranged?”

He was quiet.

Then he said he hoped everything would be fine.

It wasn't the same as saying he was comfortable.

I heard the difference.

I wanted to tell him that he didn't have to protect the family from his honest feelings.

Instead, I asked whether he had enough support for the things that were difficult for him.

He assured me that he would manage.

The answer sounded like something he had said to himself many times.

I wished I could have offered him certainty.

But I didn't know the details of the arrangements.

I couldn't promise that someone would be available whenever he needed help.

I couldn't promise that the family would respond promptly if his condition changed.

And I couldn't tell him that his concerns about the financial records would disappear.

I could only take him seriously.

After the call, I thought again about the way Elaine had become involved in his affairs.

Her help had initially seemed practical.

She had taken on tasks Victor found difficult.

She had offered to make his life easier.

But the financial questions had changed the way I viewed that arrangement.

It was no longer enough to say that she was helping.

I wanted to know whether Victor understood the decisions being made on his behalf.

I wanted to know whether he had access to his own records.

I wanted to know whether he could disagree with Elaine without being treated as confused or ungrateful.

Those questions were not accusations.

They were the questions that should have been asked from the beginning.

I began to recognize another uncomfortable truth about myself.

I had trusted appearances because they made life easier.

Elaine was involved.

Brady said things were handled.

Victor didn't complain.

I had treated those facts as reassurance.

Now I understood that none of them proved the situation was acceptable.

Someone could be involved without acting in another person's best interests.

Someone could say a problem was handled without explaining how.

Someone could remain silent because speaking up felt too difficult.

I had been relying on the appearance of care instead of asking whether Victor was actually receiving what he needed.

That realization was hard to face.

I couldn't change how I had behaved before.

But I could refuse to keep making the same mistake.

I decided to ask Victor whether he wanted help organizing his financial papers.

I made it clear that I wasn't asking him to accuse anyone or make a decision before he was ready.

I simply wanted him to have a clearer picture of what was happening.

He seemed relieved that I had offered without demanding an explanation first.

“I may need some help with that.”

I told him we could take our time.

There was no need to rush through everything in one sitting.

He could show me what he wanted to show me.

He could keep anything private that he wasn't ready to discuss.

And if we found something we couldn't explain, we would acknowledge that we didn't know the answer yet.

That seemed to matter to him.

He had spent months being told that his concerns might come from confusion.

I wanted him to know that uncertainty did not make him foolish.

It simply meant there was something we needed to understand.

I didn't pretend that organizing papers would solve the larger problem.

It wouldn't change Brady's plans.

It wouldn't tell us why the unexplained transactions had occurred.

It wouldn't settle the question of Elaine's proposed financial authority.

But it would give Victor a chance to regain some control over a part of his life that had become frightening.

Sometimes the first useful step is a small one.

I wanted to start there.

By the time our conversation ended, I felt less helpless.

I still couldn't control what the family would do.

But I could help Victor ask his questions without apologizing for them.

And I could stop allowing other people's impatience to decide which questions deserved an answer.

<a
