10 – The Word Cruise Changed the Way I Understood Our Thanksgiving Plans, Because Victor’s Illness Suddenly Seemed Less Important Than Everyone Else’s Pleasure

I learned that Brady and Elaine intended to take a cruise for Thanksgiving.

At first, I struggled to understand what I had heard.

A cruise.

While Victor was ill.

While he was worried about his finances.

While he was still trying to understand the paperwork Elaine had suggested he sign.

I waited for some explanation that would make the decision feel less troubling.

Perhaps the arrangements had been made long before his condition worsened.

Perhaps there was something I didn't know.

Perhaps they had already arranged reliable care for him.

I wanted to ask those questions before deciding what I thought.

But the more I considered the situation, the harder it became to ignore the obvious problem.

Victor was not simply an older man spending a holiday at home.

He was a man with cancer who had been struggling to understand whether his financial affairs were being handled properly.

He had told me he felt uncertain about the people he depended on.

And now the people closest to him were preparing to leave.

I asked Brady how they intended to manage things for his father.

He answered as though the details were unimportant.

“Dad has everything he needs.”

I asked whether someone would be checking on Victor.

Brady said there were arrangements.

I wanted to know what those arrangements were.

He grew impatient.

“Why do you have to question everything?”

I felt the familiar pressure to retreat.

It would have been easier to accept his answer and avoid another argument.

I could have told myself that Victor was being looked after.

I could have pretended that the cruise was a separate issue from the financial concerns.

But the two things did not feel separate to me.

Victor had already explained how difficult it was to get answers from Brady and Elaine.

He had already described the way his concerns were dismissed.

Now he was facing a holiday when the people he expected to rely on would be away.

I asked Brady whether he understood how that might feel to his father.

He looked at me with open irritation.

“He'll manage.”

Those two words stayed with me.

Not because they were cruel on their own.

Because they revealed how easily Victor's needs could be reduced to something he was expected to endure.

I thought about the man who apologized whenever he asked for help.

I thought about his careful voice when he told me he didn't want to cause trouble.

I thought about the papers scattered near his chair.

And I wondered how many times he had told himself that he should be grateful for whatever assistance he received.

I was angry.

I was also ashamed.

I had known Brady for years.

I knew he could be thoughtless.

I had watched him avoid hard conversations.

But I had continued to believe that certain responsibilities would always matter to him.

His father was one of those responsibilities.

I had assumed there was a line he would not cross.

Now I wasn't so sure.

I asked him whether he had spoken to Victor about the cruise.

Brady said his father knew about the plans.

I didn't know what Victor had been told or how the conversation had happened.

I only knew that Brady spoke as though informing his father was the same thing as making sure he was cared for.

It wasn't.

A person could know that their family was leaving and still feel abandoned by the decision.

A person could accept a plan without agreeing that it was right.

And a person who was seriously ill might not have the energy to argue with relatives who had already made up their minds.

I thought about calling Victor immediately.

I wanted to ask him how he felt about the arrangement.

I wanted to know whether he had been given a real choice or simply expected to accept what everyone else had decided.

Then I stopped myself.

I didn't want to turn his life into another interrogation.

He had already shared painful information with me.

I needed to let him speak in his own time.

Instead, I told Brady that his father needed more consideration than he was receiving.

He shook his head.

“You're making me feel like a terrible son.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

I could have reassured him.

I could have said that wasn't what I meant.

I could have listed all the ways he had helped his father in the past.

But that would have moved the conversation away from the present.

I was not asking Brady to feel guilty for the sake of guilt.

I was asking him to consider what his father needed.

Those were different things.

“I want you to think about what he's going through.”

Brady didn't answer.

He turned away, and the conversation ended.

I sat with the silence afterward.

The cruise had become more than a holiday plan.

It had shown me how differently we understood responsibility.

Brady saw his father's care as something that could be arranged around his own life.

I was beginning to understand that Victor needed more than arrangements.

He needed people who were willing to notice when something was wrong and stay long enough to help him face it.

I could not decide for Brady.

But I could no longer pretend his decision had no meaning.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Wanted to Believe the Family
