9 – I Kept Waiting for Brady to Show Some Concern for His Father, Until His Reaction Made Me Question What I Had Been Making Excuses For

I thought Brady might reconsider once Thanksgiving was close enough to feel real.

I was wrong.

The more I thought about Victor, the more I hoped my husband would recognize what the situation required without another argument.

I wanted him to visit his father.

I wanted him to ask how he was feeling.

I wanted him to look at the financial statements and help him understand the things that had frightened him.

None of those things seemed unreasonable to me.

Yet I found myself preparing to defend every one of them.

That was how far our conversations had drifted from what mattered.

One evening, I brought up Victor again.

Brady was occupied with his own plans, and I waited until there was a quiet moment before speaking.

“Have you checked on your father today?”

He barely looked at me.

“Not today.”

I asked whether he had called the day before.

He said he couldn't remember.

I stood there, trying to understand how a man could forget whether he had spoken to his sick father.

Perhaps he genuinely couldn't recall.

Perhaps he didn't think it was important enough to remember.

I couldn't know which answer was true.

But I knew Victor had been waiting for reassurance from the people he loved.

“Could you call him tonight?”

Brady let out a breath.

“I'll call when I have time.”

The answer sounded familiar.

There was always a later.

Later, when work was finished.

Later, when plans were settled.

Later, when the conversation wouldn't interfere with something Brady wanted to do.

I had accepted that word for years.

Now I heard what it meant when applied to someone who was seriously ill.

It meant Victor's needs could always be postponed.

I wanted to tell Brady that his father didn't have unlimited time.

I wanted to remind him that cancer was not an ordinary inconvenience.

Instead, I asked whether he had thought any more about the financial concerns Victor had raised.

That changed his expression.

“Why are you still talking about that?”

“Because your father is worried.”

“He gets worried about things he doesn't understand.”

I felt myself grow still.

Brady spoke with the confidence of someone who believed the conversation was already over.

I asked whether he had personally reviewed the statements.

He said he had other responsibilities.

I asked whether he had seen the paperwork Elaine wanted Victor to sign.

He didn't give me a clear answer.

Then he accused me of looking for reasons to distrust his family.

I almost laughed at that.

Not because anything was funny.

Because Victor was the one who had raised the concerns, yet somehow I had become the problem for listening to him.

I reminded Brady that his father wasn't asking us to accuse anyone.

He wanted to understand the transactions.

He wanted to know why some bills remained unpaid.

He wanted clarity about the financial authority Elaine had requested.

Those were ordinary questions.

Brady didn't seem interested in discussing them.

“You're making this bigger than it is.”

I looked at him.

I had heard that sentence in different forms throughout our marriage.

It was one of his favorite ways to make a concern sound unreasonable without actually answering it.

I used to wonder whether I was too sensitive.

I used to replay conversations afterward, searching for the moment when I might have said something differently.

That night, I didn't do that.

I knew what Victor had told me.

I knew what Brady had failed to explain.

And I knew that the absence of an answer did not make the question disappear.

I left the conversation before it became another argument about my attitude.

Later, I sat alone and thought about the difference between protecting someone and protecting them from accountability.

I had spent years protecting Brady from uncomfortable feelings.

When he disappointed someone, I explained his behavior.

When he avoided a responsibility, I helped manage the consequences.

When he became defensive, I tried to make the conversation easier for him.

I had called those things love.

Some of them probably were.

But love could not mean that every difficult truth had to be softened until it no longer required anyone to change.

Victor had already spent enough time wondering whether he was asking too much.

I wasn't going to add to that burden.

The following day, I checked on Victor.

He sounded tired when he answered, but he was pleased to hear from me.

We spoke for a while.

He asked how Brady was doing.

I told him my husband had been busy.

I didn't want to make Victor feel worse by describing the conversation we'd had.

He accepted my answer without complaint.

Then he asked whether I thought Thanksgiving would work out.

I knew what he was really asking.

He wanted to know whether his family would remember him.

I told him I hoped we could make the day work.

It was the most honest answer I could give him.

After we ended the call, I sat with my phone in my hand.

I had wanted to reassure him.

Instead, I had offered a hope I wasn't sure I believed.

That bothered me.

I could not control Brady's choices, and I could not promise Victor that the family would suddenly become thoughtful.

But I could stop treating his disappointment as something that needed to be hidden.

For once, I wanted the people around Victor to see the situation as it was.

Not as we wished it were.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Word Cruise Changed the Way I Understood
