8 – Thanksgiving Was Getting Closer, and I Finally Saw That the Hardest Decision Wasn’t About the Holiday but About What We Were Willing to Ignore

The days leading up to Thanksgiving passed with an uncomfortable sense of unfinished business.

Victor's concerns had not been resolved.

Brady had not shown me that he had examined the financial records.

Elaine's proposed paperwork remained something Victor was uncertain about.

And I was still trying to understand how a family could allow so much doubt to settle around a man who was already facing a serious illness.

I wanted to believe the holiday might bring everyone back to their senses.

That was probably wishful thinking.

I had always believed that important occasions reminded people what mattered.

Birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Family gatherings.

Thanksgiving.

I thought those moments made it harder to ignore the people who loved us.

But a date on the calendar could not make someone more thoughtful than they wanted to be.

It could only reveal what they were willing to put first.

I watched Brady make his plans.

He spoke about them with the confidence of someone who expected no serious objections.

When I brought up his father, he seemed impatient.

“We'll make sure he's taken care of.”

The words sounded reassuring until I realized they contained no real answer.

Who would make sure?

What would Victor need?

Had anyone asked him what he wanted?

I asked those questions.

Brady acted as though I was complicating something simple.

“Dad has people helping him.”

I thought about the papers beside Victor's chair.

I thought about the withdrawals he couldn't explain.

I thought about how quickly Brady had blamed the medication rather than looking at the records.

“Having help doesn't mean everything is fine,” I said.

Brady's face tightened.

He told me I was reading too much into the situation.

He said I was making him feel guilty for trying to manage his own life.

I felt the conversation slipping into familiar territory.

Soon, we were no longer talking about Victor's needs.

We were talking about Brady's feelings about being questioned.

That was how these conversations usually ended.

The original concern disappeared beneath a new argument about whether I had been fair to him.

I nearly apologized.

The words came close to my mouth before I stopped myself.

I wasn't trying to punish Brady.

I wasn't asking him to abandon his own needs.

I was asking him to take his father's condition seriously.

There was a difference, and I needed to stop allowing him to erase it.

“I want to know that your father won't be left without the care he needs.”

Brady looked away.

“He'll be fine.”

He said it as though the sentence itself could settle the matter.

I wanted to believe him.

I also knew that belief was not a plan.

Later, I thought about what Victor had said during our conversation.

He didn't want to cause trouble.

He didn't want to accuse anyone unfairly.

He wanted to understand why his statements were wrong and why bills were still arriving.

He wanted to know whether he had been asked to sign something that gave Elaine more authority over his finances.

Those were reasonable concerns.

They were not an attack on his family.

Yet the people around him seemed to treat every question as if it were a personal insult.

I began to understand how that could silence someone.

If every concern led to an argument, eventually the person with the concern might stop speaking.

If every request for help made others impatient, eventually that person might decide it was easier to struggle alone.

Victor had spent much of his life trying not to burden anyone.

I wondered whether his silence had allowed the family to underestimate how much he was suffering.

I also wondered whether I had helped create that silence by accepting the same explanations everyone else offered.

I could not change the past.

I could change what I did next.

I decided I would not dismiss Victor's worries again.

If he wanted help examining his paperwork, I would sit with him.

If he wanted to ask questions about his finances, I would take those questions seriously.

If Brady accused me of interfering, I would have to accept that he might be angry with me.

I didn't like the thought.

But I liked the thought of Victor sitting alone with his doubts even less.

Thanksgiving was supposed to be a time when families expressed gratitude for one another.

I found myself thinking instead about responsibility.

Gratitude was easy to talk about.

Responsibility was what remained when someone needed something from you and helping them became inconvenient.

Victor had spent years being responsible for Brady.

Now Brady had a chance to show what that relationship meant to him.

I wanted him to choose his father.

I wanted him to understand that the holiday could not be separated from the condition Victor was in.

But I was beginning to accept that I could not make the decision for him.

I could only decide whether I would keep pretending his choices were beyond question.

That evening, I thought again about the financial records.

I still had no proof of what had happened.

I wasn't going to invent an explanation just because I feared the worst.

But the uncertainty itself mattered.

Victor deserved clarity.

He deserved to understand what he had signed, what had been paid, and what had not.

He deserved to make decisions about his own life without being treated as though illness had made him incapable of understanding anything.

The closer Thanksgiving came, the more certain I became about one thing.

Whatever the family decided to do, I could no longer use the word peace to excuse my silence.

If keeping peace meant allowing Victor to feel abandoned, then it wasn't peace worth protecting.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Kept Waiting for Brady to Show
