7 – The More I Thought About Victor’s Missing Money, the More I Wondered Why His Questions Had Become a Burden to Everyone Except Him

The next time I visited Victor, I paid closer attention to the small things.

I noticed how slowly he moved from one room to another.

I noticed that he sometimes stopped before answering a question, not because he didn't understand it, but because speaking seemed to take more energy than it once had.

I noticed the papers gathered near his chair.

There were envelopes, appointment notes, and documents he had apparently been trying to organize.

Nothing about the scene looked dramatic.

That made it worse.

His life was not falling apart in one sudden moment.

It was becoming harder to manage in a hundred small ways.

And the people who should have been helping him seemed more interested in deciding what he could no longer handle.

He welcomed me in and asked whether I wanted something to drink.

I told him I was fine.

He asked again.

I accepted a glass of water because I didn't want him to feel that he had failed to take care of me.

Even then, he was trying to be the host.

I sat with him near the table where he had placed his papers.

For a while, we spoke about ordinary things.

He asked how Brady was doing.

I gave him an honest but careful answer.

Victor listened without interrupting.

He didn't criticize his son.

He didn't defend him, either.

That silence told me something had changed.

“I don't like feeling suspicious of people,” he said eventually.

I looked at him.

He explained that he had always preferred to settle matters directly.

If there was a misunderstanding, he wanted to talk about it.

If something needed to be corrected, he wanted to understand what had gone wrong.

He had never wanted to believe that someone close to him would take advantage of his condition.

I told him that I understood.

Then I asked whether he had been able to look through the statements again.

He nodded toward the papers.

“I tried.”

He had become tired before he could make sense of everything.

Some entries were familiar.

Others were not.

He couldn't tell whether the problem came from a forgotten payment, a mistake, or something else.

He wanted to know what had happened.

That was all.

I looked at the documents without pretending that I could interpret them at a glance.

I wasn't going to accuse anyone based on incomplete information.

But I could see why Victor felt unsettled.

The records had raised questions he couldn't answer on his own.

He needed someone to help him review them carefully, not someone to tell him that asking was pointless.

I asked whether Elaine had explained the transactions.

Victor shook his head.

“She said I shouldn't concern myself with the details.”

I let that sentence sit between us.

Maybe Elaine believed she was sparing him stress.

Maybe she thought she could manage the practical matters more efficiently.

But Victor had not asked to be kept in the dark.

He had asked for help.

Those were different things.

I asked him whether he had seen the document she wanted him to sign since their conversation.

He said he would need to check where he had put it.

He did not seem eager to discuss it further.

I didn't press him.

He was already carrying enough worry, and I didn't want my questions to become another demand he had to satisfy.

Instead, I asked how he had been feeling.

He told me the truth as best he could.

Some days were manageable.

Others were difficult.

He was tired more often than he liked.

He had begun to understand that his illness would require him to accept help, even when he disliked the feeling of depending on other people.

That admission seemed to cost him something.

I told him there was nothing shameful about needing support.

He gave me a small smile.

“I know that when I'm thinking clearly.”

I understood what he meant.

Knowing something in theory did not always make it easy to accept when it became part of your own life.

Victor had been independent for a long time.

He had made decisions, cared for his family, and handled his responsibilities.

Now every request for help reminded him that his strength had limits.

He didn't need people to pretend those limits weren't real.

He needed them to respect him within them.

I thought about Brady again.

My husband had been given help throughout his life.

He had received money when he needed it and support when he struggled.

Victor had done those things because he loved him.

Yet now that Victor needed care, Brady seemed to treat his father's dependence as an inconvenience.

I could not reconcile those two things.

I wanted to ask Victor whether he had always worried about Brady's response to difficult conversations.

I decided against it.

He had already told me enough to understand how their relationship worked.

I didn't need him to recount every disappointment.

I needed to make sure the present one was not ignored.

Before I left, I told him I would keep listening and help where I could.

I was careful not to promise more than I could deliver.

He thanked me.

Then he apologized for taking up my time.

I felt a sharp ache in my chest.

He had spent the visit explaining why he was worried about his own affairs, and he was still concerned that he had inconvenienced me.

I told him he didn't need to apologize.

He nodded, but I wasn't sure he believed me.

As I walked out, I looked back at the papers on the table.

They were ordinary documents.

Bills.

Statements.

The kinds of things most people barely notice until something goes wrong.

For Victor, they had become a test of whether he could trust the people who claimed to be helping him.

I couldn't solve that problem with reassurance alone.

The records would need to be understood.

The paperwork would need to be examined.

And Victor would need the freedom to ask questions without being made to feel that his illness had taken away his right to know the answers.

<a
