6 – I Began Looking Differently at Every Small Decision the Family Had Made for Victor, Because the Kindest Explanations No Longer Fit

I left Victor's house with more questions than answers.

The drive home felt longer than usual.

I kept thinking about the papers Elaine had offered him and the statements he said didn't add up.

I also kept thinking about Brady.

I knew my husband could be selfish.

I had seen him avoid responsibilities and expect other people to adjust around him.

But I had never wanted to believe that his behavior toward his father might involve something more serious.

That was the part I struggled with.

It was easier to criticize Brady when the consequences affected me.

When his behavior hurt Victor, I found myself searching for ways to soften it.

I told myself that grief had shaped him.

I told myself that he had never learned how to handle difficult emotions.

I told myself that family members were allowed to have flaws.

All of those things could be true.

None of them explained away the questions Victor had raised.

When I got home, Brady was occupied with his own plans.

He seemed comfortable, almost casual, as if the family situation required no more thought than an ordinary weekend arrangement.

I watched him for a moment before speaking.

“Have you talked to your father lately?”

He glanced at me.

“Why?”

“He's been worried about his finances.”

Brady's expression changed slightly.

Not enough to tell me anything certain.

Enough to make me pay attention.

“Dad worries about everything now.”

I felt the familiar urge to argue.

Instead, I asked him what he meant.

He said Victor had become more anxious since the diagnosis.

He suggested that the medication and the strain of treatment could affect how his father interpreted ordinary things.

He spoke as though the matter had already been settled.

I remembered Victor sitting in his chair, looking at his hands while he tried to explain what he had found.

“Did you look at the statements with him?”

Brady sighed.

“I've got enough to deal with.”

The answer came so easily that I didn't know what to say.

His father had told him about unexplained withdrawals and bills that were still arriving.

Brady had apparently decided that the simplest response was to treat the concern as another symptom of illness.

I wanted to ask how he could be so certain without examining the records.

But I could already imagine the conversation turning into an argument about my attitude.

I had spent years learning which questions Brady considered criticism.

I had learned how to make my voice softer, how to begin with a compliment, and how to retreat when he accused me of making a problem out of nothing.

I was tired of that pattern.

Still, I hesitated.

That hesitation was mine to own.

“His concerns deserve to be checked,” I said.

Brady looked at me for a moment.

Then he turned back to what he had been doing.

“I said I'd deal with it.”

There was no clear explanation of when.

There was no suggestion that he had examined anything.

Just a statement that allowed him to end the conversation.

I stood there feeling foolish for expecting more.

Later, I thought about Elaine.

She had offered to help Victor when his health began to decline.

That could have been an act of kindness.

It could also have created an arrangement in which she became the person who controlled access to information.

I didn't know which description fit.

I wasn't going to decide based on suspicion alone.

But I couldn't ignore that Victor had described a troubling pattern.

He had found discrepancies.

He had asked Brady about them.

He had been told his medication might be affecting his judgment.

Elaine had encouraged him to let her handle everything.

Then she had suggested that he grant her more financial authority.

Those facts needed to be considered together.

I began to wonder how much Victor had been expected to accept without question simply because he was ill.

The thought made me uncomfortable.

It was possible that some of the financial problems had ordinary explanations.

It was also possible that the paperwork Elaine proposed was meant to help manage legitimate needs.

But if that was the case, why had Victor been left feeling unable to ask for clarification?

Why had no one sat down with him and patiently reviewed the records?

Why had Brady treated his father's concern as a nuisance?

I didn't have the answers.

I only knew the questions were not going away.

That evening, I found myself thinking about the way Victor had apologized for needing help.

He had thanked people for the smallest things.

He had tried to make his illness less burdensome for everyone around him.

Perhaps that was why the family had become so accustomed to making decisions without considering how those decisions affected him.

He rarely pushed back.

He rarely demanded explanations.

He had spent years helping Brady recover from mistakes, and now he seemed afraid to inconvenience his son by asking him to look at a bank statement.

I could no longer pretend that this was simply a disagreement about Thanksgiving.

The holiday had brought the family's priorities into focus.

Victor needed care.

Brady wanted to preserve his plans.

Elaine had assumed increasing responsibility for Victor's affairs.

And I was standing between what I had been told and what I was beginning to understand.

I wanted to believe that the situation could still be corrected.

I wanted to believe that a careful conversation and a clear examination of the records would settle the matter.

But I was beginning to understand that I could not make the truth harmless simply by hoping for a harmless explanation.

The next time Victor spoke about his concerns, I would listen.

And if he needed help understanding what he had signed or what had happened to his money, I would not tell him to stop worrying.

<a
