5 – The Question Victor Couldn’t Answer Without Looking Away Made Me Realize That Trust Had Become Something His Own Family Expected Him to Surrender

Victor remained quiet for several seconds.

I could hear the clock in the next room.

He kept his eyes on his hands, rubbing one thumb over the other as if he were trying to find the right words.

I waited for him to answer my question.

Had he signed the paperwork Elaine had offered him?

At last, he looked up.

“I didn't know what to think anymore.”

That wasn't an answer.

But it told me more than I expected.

Victor had spent months noticing things that didn't make sense, only to be told that his illness was making him unreliable.

He had asked questions and received explanations that left him feeling worse.

Now he seemed afraid that even I might doubt him.

I moved my chair a little closer.

“You can tell me what happened.”

He nodded, though he still looked uncertain.

“I wanted to believe there was a simple explanation.”

I understood that feeling.

When someone you love begins behaving in ways that hurt you, you don't immediately stop loving them.

You search for reasons.

You remember the good things they have done.

You tell yourself that the person you knew is still there, somewhere beneath the behavior you cannot explain.

Victor had been doing that with Brady for years.

He had done it with Elaine, too.

The difference was that he could no longer afford to ignore what was happening around him.

He was sick.

His strength was limited.

And the financial records had made him question whether the people helping him were protecting his interests.

I didn't ask him to make accusations.

I didn't want him to feel that he had to prove something to me before I would take his worries seriously.

Instead, I asked what he remembered about the paperwork.

He took a breath.

“Elaine said it would make things easier.”

He explained that she had presented the document as a practical step.

She was already helping him manage appointments and prescriptions.

According to her, broader authority would make it simpler to handle the rest of his affairs.

I could understand why the suggestion might have sounded reasonable at first.

When someone is ill, even small administrative tasks can become exhausting.

A person may welcome help without realizing how much control a document could transfer.

But there was a difference between asking someone to help and giving them the power to make decisions without you.

I wanted to know whether Victor had understood that difference when Elaine approached him.

He looked down again.

“I trusted her to explain it properly.”

The words were quiet.

They were also painful.

He had not asked for the situation he was in.

He had accepted help from someone who appeared willing to provide it.

Now he was trying to determine whether that trust had been misplaced.

I couldn't tell him what Elaine intended.

I hadn't seen the document.

I didn't know exactly what it authorized.

And I wasn't going to pretend that suspicion was the same thing as proof.

But I could see that Victor needed answers, not another person telling him to stop asking questions.

“Do you still have the papers?”

He paused.

“I would have to look.”

That was enough for me to understand that the matter hadn't been settled.

There were details we didn't know.

There were records that needed to be examined.

There were questions about the withdrawals and unpaid bills that deserved clear answers.

I began to think about how easily a person could lose confidence in their own judgment when everyone around them insisted they were confused.

Victor had been living with that pressure while fighting cancer.

He had to manage his physical pain and the fear that came with his diagnosis.

On top of that, he had been trying to understand whether his money was being handled properly.

I felt ashamed that I hadn't recognized the weight he was carrying sooner.

I had noticed his declining health.

I had worried about his loneliness.

But I hadn't understood how much uncertainty had settled into the ordinary parts of his life.

Even paying a bill had become something he could no longer take for granted.

I wanted to ask why he hadn't told me earlier.

Then I realized how unfair that question would be.

He had already told me that Brady dismissed his concerns.

He had already explained that Elaine encouraged him to leave everything in her hands.

Perhaps he had expected me to react the same way.

Perhaps he had simply been trying to preserve whatever peace remained.

I couldn't know.

I only knew that he was speaking now, and I needed to listen.

“I don't want to cause trouble,” he said.

That sentence stayed with me.

Victor was the person whose money was involved.

He was the person who had noticed the discrepancies.

He was the person who had been asked to surrender more authority.

Yet he was worried about causing trouble for everyone else.

I wanted to tell him that he had nothing to apologize for.

Instead, I kept my voice steady.

“Wanting to understand your own finances isn't causing trouble.”

He studied my face.

For the first time during our conversation, his shoulders seemed to relax a little.

Not much.

Just enough for me to notice.

I understood that he wasn't asking me to solve everything in that moment.

He needed someone to acknowledge that his questions were reasonable.

He needed to know that his illness did not erase his right to make decisions about his own life.

I couldn't promise him an easy outcome.

But I could promise myself that I would no longer treat his worries as something to smooth over for the sake of family harmony.

The clock continued ticking in the next room.

Victor looked toward the doorway, then back at me.

“I don't know who I can trust with this.”

I felt the weight of that admission.

I wanted to give him an answer that would make him feel safe.

But trust wasn't something I could demand from him.

I would have to earn it.

And the first step was making sure he didn't have to face his questions alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Began Looking Differently at Every Small
