4 – I Could No Longer Dismiss Victor’s Worries as Family Tension Once I Understood How Much He Had Been Expected to Trust Without Asking Questions

After Victor told me about the financial statements, I found myself thinking about all the times he had tried to make life easier for everyone else.

He had rarely asked for much.

He seemed to believe that needing help gave other people the right to decide how much patience he deserved.

I didn't agree with that.

But I had allowed myself to behave as though there was little I could do to change it.

Now I couldn't stop thinking about the money he said was missing.

I didn't know what the transactions meant.

I didn't know whether every discrepancy had the same explanation.

I wasn't going to pretend I knew more than Victor had told me.

But I knew his concern was real.

He had looked at the statements himself.

He had noticed things that didn't make sense.

And when he asked for answers, the people he depended on had questioned his ability to understand what he was seeing.

That bothered me more than I could easily explain.

If Victor had been mistaken, someone could have helped him check the records.

If a bill had been overlooked, someone could have explained what happened.

If a transaction had a legitimate purpose, there should have been a way to clarify it.

Instead, Victor had been left doubting his own judgment.

I thought about Brady's response.

His father had raised him.

His father had helped him through financial trouble.

His father had tried to protect him from the worst parts of grief.

And when Victor needed reassurance, Brady had suggested that the problem was his father's mind.

I wanted to believe there was some explanation I hadn't heard.

That was still my habit.

I looked for the missing detail that might make the behavior easier to accept.

Maybe Brady was frightened.

Maybe he didn't know how to handle his father's illness.

Maybe he had become so used to Elaine managing things that he had stopped asking questions himself.

Those possibilities could explain some of his behavior.

They couldn't make Victor's concerns disappear.

I began to understand that I had been confusing an explanation with an excuse.

They weren't the same thing.

Victor had trusted Elaine with responsibilities because his health made those responsibilities difficult.

That trust should have made her more careful with him, not less.

It should have meant that every decision involving his money was handled openly.

It should have meant that Victor could ask a question without being made to feel foolish for asking it.

Instead, he had found himself in a position where the people closest to him were telling him to stop worrying and let them decide.

I wondered how long he had kept his concerns to himself before speaking to me.

I wondered whether he had tried to tell Brady more than once.

I wondered how many times he had been reassured just enough to make him feel guilty for bringing it up again.

The thought made me angry.

Not because I had proof of wrongdoing.

I didn't.

I was angry because Victor deserved to have his questions taken seriously, whatever the answers turned out to be.

He was ill.

He was vulnerable.

He was also an adult who had every right to understand what was happening to his own money.

Cancer had not taken that right away.

Needing assistance had not taken it away.

Growing older had not taken it away.

I realized that I had to stop waiting for someone else to decide whether Victor's concerns mattered.

They mattered because they were his concerns, and because he was the one living with the consequences.

I couldn't promise him that everything would be fine.

I couldn't tell him that Brady would suddenly become the son he needed.

I couldn't know what Elaine's intentions were.

But I could stop dismissing what he had told me.

For the first time, I let myself consider the possibility that the family had become so comfortable making decisions for Victor that they no longer understood the difference between helping him and controlling him.

That realization changed the way I thought about Thanksgiving.

The holiday was no longer just a question of who would visit or how the day would be arranged.

It was a question of whether Victor's needs would matter when they conflicted with what everyone else wanted.

I had spent too much time hoping the people around him would make the right choice without being asked.

Now I understood that hope alone wasn't enough.

Victor needed someone willing to hear him.

Someone willing to take his concerns seriously.

Someone who wouldn't tell him to be quiet simply because his questions made other people uncomfortable.

I sat with him and let the silence remain between us for a while.

I didn't want to rush him.

I didn't want to turn his confession into another situation in which he had to reassure someone else.

He had spent enough time worrying about how his problems affected the people around him.

This time, I wanted him to know that I was listening.

And I knew I could no longer pretend that what he had told me was just another family disagreement.

<a
