2 – The Thanksgiving Plans Sounded Ordinary Until I Realized Victor Was Being Treated Like a Problem Everyone Else Had Already Agreed to Ignore

The trouble with family decisions was that they rarely sounded cruel when people first discussed them.

They sounded practical.

They sounded temporary.

They sounded like something nobody should take personally.

That was how I had learned to recognize the excuses.

Brady could make almost anything sound reasonable if he spoke calmly enough.

He didn't need to raise his voice.

He only needed to make the other person feel unreasonable for disagreeing with him.

I had seen him do it at home.

I had watched him do it with Victor.

And I had done the worst thing a person can do when they see someone being treated unfairly.

I had told myself it wasn't my place to interfere.

Thanksgiving should have been simple.

Victor was ill, and the family needed to decide how to make the day manageable for him.

There was no reason that decision had to become a battle.

There was no reason anyone had to pretend his needs were a surprise.

He had been living with cancer for long enough that we all understood what it meant.

Some days were better than others.

Some days required more help.

That was the reality.

Yet the family continued to behave as though Victor's illness had arrived at an inconvenient moment rather than becoming part of his everyday life.

I remember thinking about how quiet his house could feel.

A home that had once held years of family life now seemed to contain more waiting than conversation.

Victor waited for appointments.

He waited for people to call.

He waited for someone to tell him what was happening next.

He tried not to let any of that show.

When I visited, he often asked about ordinary things.

He wanted to know how we were doing.

He asked about the weather.

He asked whether Brady was busy.

I sometimes wondered whether he asked that last question because he genuinely wanted to know or because he was trying to prepare himself for another disappointment.

I never asked him.

I wish I had.

Brady's relationship with his father had always been complicated by the way Victor tried to help him.

Victor had spent years giving his son second chances.

When Brady needed something, Victor found a way to provide it.

If Brady made a mistake, Victor helped him recover.

If money became a problem, Victor tried to solve it.

I didn't understand the full history at the time.

I only knew that Brady seemed to expect help as naturally as he expected the sun to rise.

He didn't always recognize what it cost the person helping him.

And when that person was no longer able to give as much, Brady seemed to take it personally.

I began to see that pattern more clearly as Victor grew weaker.

The more Victor needed, the less patient Brady appeared to become.

It was as though his father's illness had changed the terms of an arrangement Brady had never thought would end.

I didn't say that to him.

Not then.

I was still trying to find the right words, as if the problem could be solved by choosing a sentence that was impossible to misunderstand.

There is no perfect sentence for someone who doesn't want to hear the truth.

Thanksgiving was supposed to bring the family together.

Instead, the holiday exposed how differently we understood the word family.

For me, it meant showing up.

For Victor, I suspected it meant hoping the people he loved would remember him without needing to be asked.

For Brady, it seemed to mean finding a way to preserve his plans.

I could see the differences.

I just wasn't ready to admit what they meant.

I kept thinking that someone would change their mind.

Someone would look at Victor and recognize that he needed more than a promise to check in later.

Someone would understand that a holiday could wait, but time with a dying parent could not be replaced.

I wanted that person to be Brady.

He was Victor's son.

Surely that had to count for something.

But being someone's child doesn't automatically make a person dependable.

Sometimes, it only gives them more opportunities to disappoint someone who still hopes for better.

As the holiday approached, I felt the pressure building.

I wanted to ask direct questions.

I wanted to know who would be with Victor, what help he would need, and whether everyone understood how serious his condition had become.

I also wanted to avoid another argument with my husband.

That second desire embarrassed me, though not enough to stop it from influencing me.

I had become accustomed to measuring my words according to Brady's reaction.

If I asked too much, he would accuse me of criticizing him.

If I said too little, I could pretend I hadn't agreed with him.

It was a cowardly way to live.

At the time, I called it being reasonable.

I remember how often I used that word.

Reasonable.

It sounded mature.

It sounded calm.

It also gave me a way to avoid saying that something was wrong.

Victor didn't need everyone to be perfect.

He didn't need an elaborate celebration.

He needed care, and he needed the people around him to take his situation seriously.

That should not have been difficult to understand.

Yet the more the holiday approached, the more I realized that understanding wasn't the problem.

The problem was whether anyone was willing to change their plans because of it.

I began to dread the conversations that had not yet happened.

I could feel myself preparing to defend Victor before anyone had openly criticized him.

I hated that feeling.

He had done nothing wrong.

He had become sick.

And somehow, that was beginning to feel like something he had to apologize for.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Victor Finally Told Me Why He Had Stopped Trusting the People
