1 – I Thought Thanksgiving Would Be One More Family Obligation Until I Realized Someone Had Decided Victor Was No Longer Worth Caring For

I used to believe that family showed up when things got hard.

It took me longer than I wanted to admit to understand that some people only showed up when they wanted something.

Victor had spent years giving his family reasons to love him.

By Thanksgiving, he was lying sick in his own home, and the people who should have been beside him had other plans.

I still think about that holiday.

Not because of the food or the decorations.

Because of the choices we made before anyone sat down to eat.

I was married to Brady, Victor's only son.

For a long time, I believed Brady was simply a man who had trouble expressing what he felt.

He could be charming when he wanted to be.

He could also make a person feel selfish for asking him to do something he didn't want to do.

I had seen that side of him before.

I just hadn't understood how far he was willing to take it.

Victor had been diagnosed with cancer.

His health had been declining, and ordinary tasks had begun to require more effort than he liked to admit.

He wasn't the kind of man who enjoyed asking for help.

Even when he needed it, he would try to make things easier for everyone else.

That was one of the first things I noticed about him.

He apologized when he needed someone to bring him a glass of water.

He thanked people for sitting with him.

Sometimes, he thanked me twice for something so small that I barely remembered doing it.

I found that difficult to watch.

A man who had spent much of his life taking care of others was beginning to feel guilty for needing care himself.

Brady knew how sick his father was.

He knew the appointments, the medication, and the days when Victor could barely manage a conversation without stopping to rest.

He knew all of it.

But knowing something and allowing it to matter were two different things.

Elaine was part of the picture, too.

She had become involved in Victor's daily life after his diagnosis.

She helped with groceries, appointments, and prescriptions.

From the outside, it looked as though she was doing what a caring family member should do.

I wanted to believe that was the truth.

I wanted to believe all of us would find a way to make Victor's remaining time easier.

Instead, the family began making plans that seemed to leave him out of his own life.

Thanksgiving was approaching.

The holiday had always carried a certain expectation for me.

Even when people disagreed, they were supposed to put those disagreements aside for a day.

They were supposed to gather around a table and remember that they belonged to one another.

That was what I believed.

Brady had a different way of looking at obligations.

If something interfered with what he wanted, he treated it like an inconvenience that someone else should solve.

I had spent years making excuses for that habit.

He was stressed.

He was grieving.

He had too much going on.

There was always a reason.

And because I loved him, I kept finding another one.

Looking back, I can see how much work I did to protect him from the consequences of his own decisions.

I wish I had asked myself why that work always seemed to fall to me.

As Thanksgiving drew closer, Victor's condition became harder to ignore.

He needed patience.

He needed someone who would listen when he said he wasn't feeling well.

He needed the people closest to him to understand that his illness wasn't something he could schedule around their convenience.

I knew that.

I also knew I couldn't make Brady care simply by explaining the situation one more time.

I had tried before.

The conversations always ended the same way.

Brady would listen just long enough to make me think he understood.

Then he would return to whatever he had planned.

I began to notice how often Victor was the one expected to adjust.

If an appointment was difficult, Victor was supposed to manage.

If a visit was inconvenient, Victor was supposed to understand.

If someone couldn't help, Victor was supposed to accept it without making them feel bad.

He rarely complained.

That made everything easier for the people who were letting him down.

It also made me ashamed.

I had been there.

I had heard the excuses.

Sometimes, I had even helped explain them to Victor.

I told myself I was keeping the peace.

I told myself there was no point in turning every disagreement into an argument.

But peace that depends on one sick person swallowing every disappointment isn't peace.

It's just silence.

By the time Thanksgiving arrived, I had begun to understand that Victor was facing more than an illness.

He was also facing the possibility that the people he trusted most would not be there when he needed them.

I couldn't make that realization easier for him.

I could only decide what I was going to do about it.

And I knew that whatever happened next, I couldn't keep pretending that everything was fine.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Thanksgiving Plans Sounded Ordinary Until
