I'm not trying to punish him."

Mom folded her hands around her cup.

"He doesn't know how to handle this."

I felt the old instinct to reassure her.

I wanted to say that Dad would get over it.

I wanted to promise that things would return to normal.

But I didn't know whether they would.

And I was beginning to understand that making promises simply to calm someone down wasn't fair to either of us.

"He can talk to me," I said. "I'm willing to listen. But I can't make him acknowledge something he doesn't want to discuss."

Mom looked toward the kitchen doorway.

Dad was still looking at his phone.

She lowered her voice.

"He thinks you are making him out to be a bad father."

I stared at my coffee.

I hadn't called him a bad father.

I had told him that canceling my ticket was wrong.

Those were not the same thing.

"I can love him and still tell him when he hurts me."

Mom sighed.

"I know."

I wasn't sure whether she was agreeing or simply hoping the conversation would end.

She asked whether I would come to dinner the following weekend if everyone could make it.

I told her I would consider it.

She looked disappointed.

I felt the guilt rise again.

I could almost hear the words I would once have used.

Of course I'll come.

Don't worry.

Everything will be fine.

But I wasn't ready to make that promise.

I wanted to attend because I wanted to see my family.

I didn't want to attend because I felt responsible for proving that the family was still intact.

Mom looked down at her cup.

"I just don't want us to lose each other."

That sentence reached me.

I knew she was afraid.

I was afraid, too.

I didn't want my relationship with Dad to become a permanent argument.

I didn't want my siblings to feel they had to choose sides.

I didn't want Mom's birthday trip to become the story everyone remembered whenever we gathered.

But I also didn't want to keep paying for peace with my silence.

I reached across the table and touched her hand.

"I'm not going anywhere, Mom."

She looked up.

"But I can't promise to act like nothing happened."

Her eyes filled with tears.

I squeezed her hand gently.

"I want us to be close. I just need us to be honest."

She nodded.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Dad entered the kitchen.

He opened the refrigerator, took out a bottle of water, and stood beside the counter.

Mom looked at him.

"Your daughter and I were talking."

He glanced at me.

"I can see that."

His tone was neutral, but I could hear the irritation underneath it.

Mom asked whether he wanted coffee.

He said no.

Then he looked at me.

"Are we still going to keep talking about the trip?"

I took a breath.

"I don't want to argue about it every time we see each other."

"Then let it go."

The words landed between us.

I looked at him.

"I can stop bringing it up. That doesn't mean what happened was okay."

He shook his head.

"You always need to have the last word."

I almost answered immediately.

Then I stopped.

I didn't need to win the conversation.

I needed to remain clear about what I was saying.

"I'm not trying to win anything, Dad."

He looked away.

"I made a mistake. Fine."

I waited.

He took a drink of water.

For a moment, I thought he might continue.

Instead, he said he had been under pressure and had acted out of anger.

It was more than he had acknowledged before.

It wasn't the apology I wanted, but it was the first time he had used the word mistake.

I felt my anger soften slightly.

Not disappear.

Soften.

I wanted to accept the opening he had given me.

But I didn't want to mistake a partial acknowledgment for a complete resolution.

"Thank you for saying that," I told him.

He nodded once.

Then he asked whether I had reconsidered the loan.

I stared at him.

The brief hope I had felt disappeared.

"No, Dad."

His expression tightened.

"Then we're back where we started."

I shook my head.

"We're not. I can care about you and still say no."

He set the bottle on the counter.

"I don't know what else you expect from me."

I answered honestly.

"I expected you not to leave me at the airport."

He didn't respond.

Mom looked between us.

I could see that she wanted to intervene.

But she didn't.

For once, I didn't ask her to.

I had said what I needed to say.

Dad walked out of the kitchen.

I heard his footsteps moving down the hallway.

Mom closed her eyes briefly.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I shook my head.

"You don't have to apologize for him."

She looked at me.

"I still wish it hadn't happened."

"So do I."

We sat together for a while.

The conversation didn't end with a dramatic reconciliation.

Dad didn't come back and ask me to forgive him.

Mom didn't suddenly become comfortable challenging him.

But something had shifted.

He had acknowledged that he made a mistake, even if he still wanted me to accept his explanation and move on.

I could recognize that small step without pretending it was enough.

Before I left, Mom hugged me at the door.

She asked whether I would call her during the week.

I said I would.

This time, I meant it without feeling trapped by the promise.

I wanted to speak to her.

I wanted to maintain our relationship.

I just didn't want to be the only person responsible for making it work.

As I walked to my car, I thought about the word Dad had used.

Mistake.

Perhaps he was beginning to understand.

Perhaps he was only trying to end the conversation.

I couldn't know yet.

I got into the car and started the engine.

For the first time since the airport, I allowed myself to consider that our relationship might improve.

Not because I had agreed to the loan.

Not because I had apologized for refusing.

Because I had finally stopped pretending that love required me to accept every decision he made.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Dad Finally Admitted He Had Crossed a Line, but His Next Question Showed Me How Much of the Old Pattern Remained

I visited my parents on Saturday afternoon.
