front door.

I hadn't done anything that required one.

The next afternoon, I drove to their house.

The familiar route felt strange.

I had taken it so many times that I could usually drive without thinking about the turns.

I knew which intersection had the long light.

I knew where the road narrowed near the shops.

I knew the driveway where Dad usually parked his truck when he was home.

That day, I noticed every detail.

I was nervous.

Not because I thought my father would physically stop me from leaving.

I was nervous because I knew how easily I could fall back into the role I had always played.

The reasonable daughter.

The helpful daughter.

The daughter who could be hurt, then somehow end up comforting the person who hurt her.

I parked and sat with my hands on the steering wheel.

Then I got out.

Mom opened the door before I reached the bell.

She looked tired but pleased to see me.

She hugged me.

For a second, I let myself relax.

I had missed her.

That simple fact had survived everything that happened at the airport.

"I'm glad you came over," she said.

"Me too."

She stepped aside to let me in.

The house smelled like the coffee she usually made in the afternoon.

A pair of Dad's shoes sat near the hallway.

His keys were on the small table beside the door.

Everything looked familiar.

That familiarity made the situation harder.

I had grown up in this house.

I had spent years believing that, no matter what happened outside it, I would always have a place here.

Mom led me into the living room.

She asked whether I wanted coffee.

I said yes.

She went into the kitchen while I sat on the sofa.

I could hear her opening a cupboard and moving a spoon against a cup.

The ordinary sounds made me think about the airport again.

I had been standing at a counter, holding a boarding pass that no longer meant anything.

I had called my mother because I believed she would help me understand what had happened.

She hadn't answered.

Now she was making coffee for me as if those calls had never existed.

I didn't know what to do with that feeling.

She returned with two cups and sat opposite me.

For a while, she talked about the trip.

She told me the flight had been fine.

She mentioned that everyone had been tired when they arrived.

She described parts of the birthday celebration and said she had enjoyed being away for a few days.

I listened.

I asked a few questions because I did want to know how she had spent her birthday.

But every time she mentioned something they had done together, I felt the same thought rise in me.

I had helped arrange it.

I had wanted to be there.

I had not chosen to miss it.

Eventually, Mom stopped talking.

She looked down at her coffee.

"Your father said you were very upset."

I felt my shoulders tighten.

"I was."

She nodded.

"I thought you might need some time."

I looked at her.

"Did Dad tell you my ticket had been canceled?"

She didn't answer immediately.

The pause was small, but I noticed it.

"I knew there had been a problem with the booking," she said.

I waited.

She looked at me again.

"He told me you weren't coming."

That wasn't quite an answer.

I kept my voice calm.

"Did you know before we got to the airport?"

Mom put her cup down.

"I knew he was angry with you."

"That isn't what I asked."

She looked uncomfortable.

I felt guilty for making her uncomfortable.

Then I remembered how uncomfortable I had been standing alone at the check-in counter, calling her number while she let the phone ring.

I stayed quiet.

Mom took a breath.

"He said you had refused to help him with the business."

"I refused to co-sign a loan I couldn't afford to take responsibility for."

"I understand that."

"Do you?"

The question came out more sharply than I intended.

Mom looked at me.

I lowered my voice.

"I'm not trying to fight with you. I just need you to understand why I was hurt."

She nodded slowly.

I told her what had happened at the airport.

I explained that the airline employee had shown me the cancellation.

I told her I had called Dad, then her, then Evan and Chloe.

Nobody had answered.

Then Dad had sent me a message telling me to get home on my own.

I didn't exaggerate.

I didn't add accusations.

I simply described what had happened.

Mom listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she rubbed the side of her cup with her thumb.

"I didn't know he was going to send that message."

I believed she might be telling the truth.

I also knew that her not knowing about the message didn't explain why she hadn't answered my call.

I asked her about that.

She looked away.

"I didn't know what to say."

The answer hurt.

It was honest, at least.

I had spent days wondering whether she had chosen Dad's side because she agreed with him.

Now I understood that she might have chosen silence because she didn't want to confront him.

That didn't make the silence harmless.

It only made the reason different.

"I wasn't asking you to solve the argument," I said. "I was asking you to answer the phone."

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

She reached for a tissue from the table.

I wanted to comfort her.

The instinct was immediate.

I wanted to tell her it was all right and that we could forget about it.

But it wasn't all right.

And forgetting would only make it easier for the same thing to happen again.

So I sat quietly while she wiped her eyes.

After a moment, she asked whether I was still angry with Dad.

"Yes."

She looked down.

"I don't want the family to be divided."

"Neither do I."

I meant it.

But I was beginning to understand that keeping a family together couldn't mean one person had to absorb every hurt without saying anything.

Mom reached for her coffee again.

She said Dad had been under a lot of pressure because of the business.

I told her I knew.

I had known before he called me about the loan.

I had known when I read the agreement.

I had known when I refused to sign.

His financial problems weren't a secret to me.

But I couldn't solve them by taking on a debt that might become mine to repay.

Mom nodded, although I wasn't sure she agreed with everything I had said.

We sat quietly for a few minutes.

Then she asked whether I would come for dinner sometime soon.

I said I would think about it.

She looked disappointed.

That old feeling of guilt returned.

I wanted to say yes immediately.

I wanted to give her the reassurance she was looking for.

Instead, I finished my coffee and stood up.

"I love you, Mom."

She stood too.

"I love you, too."

I hugged her before leaving.

I didn't feel that everything was fixed.

I didn't feel that the conversation had solved the problem.

But I had finally said what happened without apologizing for being hurt.

For that afternoon, it was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Dad Expected Me to Move On as Usual, but I Was No Longer Willing to Confuse His Anger With My Responsibility

The day my family came home, I kept my phone beside me.
