Everything is coming together.”

She sounded pleased.

“I can't believe you went to all this trouble.”

“It's your birthday. You deserve to enjoy it.”

She laughed softly.

Then she asked whether Dad had talked to me about his business.

I stopped moving the papers in front of me.

“He asked me to co-sign a loan.”

There was a brief pause.

“And you wouldn't?”

“I told him I couldn't take on that kind of debt.”

Mom sighed.

“He's under a lot of pressure right now.”

“I know.”

“You know how important the company is to him.”

“I do, Mom.”

I kept my voice gentle.

“But I can't be responsible for a loan that large.”

She didn't argue with me directly.

Instead, she said Dad had been upset.

I asked whether he had told her I had done something wrong.

She said she didn't want to get between us.

That answer bothered me.

I hadn't asked her to choose sides.

I had only wanted to know whether my father was telling the family that I had somehow betrayed him.

Mom changed the subject.

She asked what time we were meeting at the airport.

I told her.

We discussed the birthday dinner and whether she should pack a light jacket.

By the time we ended the call, I had almost convinced myself that everything was fine.

Almost.

That evening, I checked the trip arrangements again.

I wanted to make sure there were no outstanding details.

I looked at the travel schedule and the confirmation messages.

Everything appeared to be in order.

The dates were correct.

The names were correct.

The departure information was correct.

I saved the latest confirmations in a folder and closed my laptop.

I didn't know that I would soon be looking at those details very differently.

The following day, Dad finally sent me a message.

For a second, I felt relieved.

I thought he might be ready to put the disagreement behind us.

Instead, he asked whether I had reconsidered the loan.

I read the message twice.

I typed a response, deleted it, and tried again.

I didn't want to start another argument.

I told him I had reviewed the numbers carefully and my decision hadn't changed.

His reply came a few minutes later.

He said I was making a mistake.

I didn't answer.

Then he sent another message about how difficult it was to keep a family business running.

I knew that was true.

I also knew that it didn't change the agreement I had been asked to sign.

I put my phone down.

For the rest of the evening, I tried to concentrate on work.

But his words stayed with me.

I kept wondering whether he had always seen my financial stability as something he could use whenever his own plans became difficult.

It wasn't a pleasant thought.

I pushed it away.

I wanted to believe that Dad was angry about the loan and nothing more.

I wanted to believe that, once the birthday trip began, he would put the disagreement aside.

That was the version of him I was accustomed to.

The next time I heard from him, he was talking about the airport.

He wanted to confirm the meeting arrangements.

His tone sounded normal.

He asked whether I had everything ready.

I said I did.

He reminded me to leave enough time for traffic.

I thanked him.

Then he told me he would see me there.

It was such an ordinary conversation that I felt foolish for having worried.

Maybe Mom had been right.

Maybe Dad only needed time.

Maybe the trip would give everyone a chance to relax.

I went back to my packing list.

I folded my clothes and placed them in my suitcase.

I checked my identification and travel documents.

I put my phone charger in the side pocket of my carry-on.

Then I looked at the little folder where I had saved the trip confirmations.

Everything was organized.

Everything was ready.

I had spent so much time making sure the family would have a good vacation that I had never seriously considered whether my place on that vacation was secure.

I assumed it was.

Why wouldn't I?

I had helped arrange it.

I had handled the details.

I had paid for the things we needed.

And the people traveling with me were my parents, my brother, and my sister.

I didn't think I needed to protect myself from them.

The night before the flight, I barely slept.

Not because I was worried about Dad.

I was excited to see Mom enjoy herself.

I wanted the trip to be a success.

I imagined her sitting down to the birthday dinner, looking around at the people she loved, and realizing how much effort had gone into making the occasion special.

I wanted her to feel celebrated.

That was all.

In the morning, I checked my suitcase one final time.

I made coffee, left my cup in the sink, and carried my bag to the car.

The sky was still gray.

Traffic was manageable.

I reached the airport with time to spare.

Dad was already there.

He stood near the entrance, looking at his phone.

When he saw me, he put it away.

“Morning.”

“Morning.”

He took a quick look at my suitcase.

“Ready?”

“Yep.”

He smiled.

It was the same smile I had seen a thousand times.

I had no reason to suspect anything.

I followed his instructions about where to meet everyone and got out of the car.

He gave me a brief hug.

Then he told me to grab a coffee if I had time.

I thanked him and watched him pull away.

I remember that moment clearly now.

Not because anything looked wrong.

Because nothing did.

He drove off as calmly as any father dropping his daughter at the airport for a family vacation.

I walked inside carrying my bag, thinking about Mom's birthday.

I checked my phone.

There were no new messages.

I went toward the departure area and prepared to check in.

Then the airline employee looked at her screen.

And my vacation disappeared.
