15 – I Had Wanted Grandpa to Tell Me How to Handle Disrespect, but His Example Left Me With a Harder Question About My Own Choices

For a long time, I thought Grandpa's calmness came naturally.

He had always seemed that way to me.

He didn't talk much.

He didn't complain unless something needed fixing.

He didn't turn every disagreement into a personal matter.

I had assumed he was simply born with a steadier temperament than mine.

After the bank, I began to wonder whether I had misunderstood him.

Maybe calmness wasn't the absence of anger.

Maybe it was the decision not to let anger choose every next step.

I thought about the moment Rick approached.

Grandpa had noticed the guard's hand.

He had addressed him directly.

He hadn't pretended not to see what was happening.

He also hadn't allowed the encounter to become a fight.

That was not passivity.

It was control.

I had spent years believing that standing up for yourself meant making the other person understand how angry you were.

Grandpa had shown me that you could make yourself understood without giving the other person your anger.

I tried to imagine what I would have done in his position.

I probably would have asked Brittany why she was speaking to him that way.

I might have raised my voice when the guard came closer.

I might have brought up the farm, the family, or the years we had lived in the county.

I would have wanted everyone in the room to know that we had a right to be there.

Grandpa had not needed to prove that.

He had acted as though he belonged there because he did.

That distinction stayed with me.

The next time I felt underestimated, I wanted to remember that my first responsibility was to understand the problem.

Was somebody being careless?

Was somebody deliberately disrespectful?

Was there a practical way to resolve the situation?

I didn't need to answer every question perfectly.

I just needed to avoid reacting before I understood what was happening.

That sounded simple.

It wasn't.

I knew myself well enough to understand how quickly pride could get involved.

If somebody dismissed my work at college, I wanted to defend it.

If somebody assumed I was studying agriculture because I lacked ambition, I wanted to prove them wrong.

Sometimes I was defending something important.

Sometimes I was simply trying to protect my feelings.

The difference wasn't always obvious.

Grandpa's example didn't give me a formula.

It gave me a question.

What actually needed to be done?

At the bank, the answer had been clear.

He needed the manager.

He asked for the manager.

Once Tom arrived, he listened and let the conversation proceed.

He didn't spend the rest of the morning punishing the teller for her mistake.

He didn't ask the customers to applaud him.

He didn't turn the old loan into a demand for special treatment.

He got the situation back to what it should have been.

I respected that more each time I thought about it.

I also thought about what it meant to be young and still learning.

I had wanted to become someone people respected.

I had imagined that meant being confident enough to answer every insult and smart enough to win every argument.

Now I wondered whether respect had more to do with the choices I made when nobody was watching.

Did I listen when somebody had something to say?

Did I admit when I was wrong?

Did I treat people fairly when I had nothing to gain from doing so?

Did I let embarrassment turn into cruelty?

Those questions were harder than the ones I had been asking.

They didn't have quick answers.

I could only test myself in ordinary moments.

The farm offered plenty of them.

A task that needed patience.

A problem that couldn't be fixed immediately.

A person whose opinion differed from mine.

Grandpa rarely explained how he handled such things.

He simply handled them.

Sometimes he made mistakes.

I knew that too.

He could be stubborn.

He could be slow to change his mind.

He had habits that belonged to another generation.

I didn't need to pretend he was perfect to learn from him.

That was another mistake I had nearly made after the bank.

I had wanted to turn him into an example so complete that I could stop questioning myself.

But Grandpa was a person, not an answer to every problem.

His actions that morning had shown me something valuable.

They hadn't removed the responsibility of making my own choices.

I had to do that part myself.

One evening, while we were finishing up for the day, I found myself thinking about the teller again.

I wondered whether she had gone home and told somebody about the encounter.

Maybe she had explained it as a difficult customer.

Maybe she had admitted that she had made an unfair assumption.

Maybe she had simply tried to forget it.

I hoped she had learned to listen more carefully.

But I couldn't make that happen.

I couldn't go back into the bank and teach her how to treat people.

I couldn't decide whether the woman in the camel coat felt ashamed.

I couldn't know what Rick thought after the guard's hand came away from his belt.

All I could do was carry the lesson into my own life.

That was enough work for one person.

And it was work I could actually do.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Bank Never Had to Put Grandpa’s Name on a Wall
