7 – On the Drive Away From the Bank, I Realized I Had Been Waiting for Grandpa to Explain His Worth When He Had Never Believed He Needed To

Grandpa pulled away from the curb without saying anything about what had happened.

The truck moved through town at its usual pace.

He watched the road.

I watched him.

I had a dozen questions and no idea which one to ask first.

I could have asked about the teller.

I could have asked about Rick.

I could have asked why Tom seemed to know so much about the loan from 1974.

Instead, I sat quietly.

The engine made the same steady noise it always made.

Outside, Marlow passed in familiar pieces.

The storefronts.

The traffic lights.

The road leading away from the center of town.

I had traveled that route with Grandpa more times than I could count.

Usually, I spent the drive thinking about the fields or the chores waiting at home.

That morning, I kept returning to the bank.

I remembered Brittany looking at his clothes.

I remembered the woman in the camel coat laughing.

I remembered Rick approaching with his hand near his belt.

And I remembered Grandpa speaking to him without raising his voice.

That was the part that stayed with me.

He hadn't tried to make himself frightening.

He hadn't tried to make himself important.

He had simply addressed the problem in front of him.

I wondered whether I could do the same.

When somebody embarrassed me, my first instinct was usually to defend myself.

I wanted to prove I wasn't foolish.

I wanted to show that I understood more than the other person assumed.

I wanted to leave the conversation with the last word.

Grandpa had not seemed interested in any of that.

He had wanted the manager.

Once Tom arrived, Grandpa had allowed him to do his job.

The moment had not required a speech from him.

The history of the bank had spoken for itself.

I thought about how easily that could have gone differently.

If Grandpa had shouted, the guard might have become more defensive.

If he had threatened to withdraw his business, the encounter might have turned into an argument about money.

If he had started listing his contributions to the town, people might have accused him of trying to impress them.

Instead, he had remained focused on the problem.

I didn't know whether he had planned any of it.

Knowing Grandpa, he probably hadn't.

He had reacted to what was happening, one moment at a time.

That was another thing I had mistaken for simplicity.

Maybe the ability to stay calm wasn't something a person decided to do once.

Maybe it was built over years of having to make decisions when getting angry wouldn't change the weather, fix the machinery, or bring rain to a dry field.

Farming didn't offer many opportunities to pretend the world would obey you if you raised your voice.

The sky did what it did.

The soil had its limits.

Equipment broke when it broke.

You could curse a storm, but the corn still needed attention afterward.

Grandpa had lived with those facts for most of his life.

I had spent much of mine expecting things to respond to effort.

If I studied harder, I could improve a grade.

If I practiced, I could become better at something.

If I explained myself clearly, people would understand what I meant.

The bank had reminded me that people didn't always respond fairly.

Sometimes they decided what you were worth before you had finished speaking.

I couldn't control that.

But I could control whether I joined them in making the same mistake.

Grandpa turned onto the road leading toward our farm.

The town began to fall behind us.

Fields opened along the roadside.

Some had already been harvested.

Others still held rows of corn waiting for the machinery to come through.

The landscape was familiar enough that I usually stopped noticing it.

That morning, I found myself looking closely.

The land was part of Grandpa's identity, but it wasn't the whole of him.

I knew that now.

He had grown up in a family that worked the soil.

He had continued that work.

He had made decisions about the farm that affected everyone connected to it.

But he had also been a person in the town.

He had trusted people.

He had risked something he owned because he believed in a project.

He had helped build a place where other people would work and do business.

The fact that he never spoke about it had allowed me to overlook it.

I looked at his hands on the steering wheel.

They were steady.

He had held those hands on that same wheel through years of driving between town and the farm.

He had carried groceries into the house.

He had lifted tools from the back of the truck.

He had repaired gates and worked machinery.

I had always understood those things as the work of a farmer.

Now I wondered what else those hands had done that I had never seen.

Grandpa glanced toward me.

I looked away from the road.

He didn't ask why I was staring.

I was grateful for that too.

I had begun to understand that loving somebody didn't mean I had already learned everything about them.

It meant I had a reason to keep learning.

I thought about Grandma Ruth.

She had known Grandpa longer than I had.

She had seen him through years of work and decisions.

She had probably known things about him that I would never discover.

The thought made me sad.

There were questions I could no longer ask her.

There were stories that had disappeared when she did.

I had taken for granted that older people would always be around to answer questions later.

I wasn't making that mistake with Grandpa if I could help it.

I wanted to ask him about the bank.

I wanted to know what had happened in 1974.

I wanted to hear his own version, not Tom's explanation in a crowded lobby.

But I also wanted to ask about the years between then and now.

The decisions that never became stories.

The risks nobody applauded.

The ordinary acts of kindness that had never made it into a conversation.

I didn't need all the answers that day.

I just needed to stop assuming there was nothing left to learn.

The truck rolled past a field where the corn had been cut.

Stalks stood in uneven rows.

The ground looked dark where the machinery had passed.

Harvest was not a clean process.

It left tracks.

It left residue.

It left the field changed by the work that had been done.

I thought about the marks Grandpa's boots had left on the bank carpet.

They had been temporary.

Somebody could clean them.

But the judgment that had followed those marks was harder to remove.

I hoped the people inside the bank would remember that.

I hoped I would.

Grandpa continued driving.

I stayed quiet.

For once, I wasn't rehearsing what I should have said.

I was thinking about what I needed to understand.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When the Farm Came Back Into View, the Mud
