You didn't ask me to explain my finances."

"What's the difference?"

"The difference is that you had already decided what the answer was."

She shook her head.

"That's not fair."

"Maybe not. But it's what happened."

My father leaned forward.

"We aren't here to argue about every conversation we've ever had."

"I'm not asking about every conversation. I'm asking about the one that led you to believe I needed help."

He sat back.

I could see that he was becoming impatient.

That was familiar, too.

In the past, I would have softened my voice at that point.

I would have reminded him that I respected his opinion.

I would have tried to make the question sound less threatening.

This time, I stayed where I was.

I wasn't asking him to confess to something terrible.

I was asking him to explain a decision involving money and my name.

He owed me an answer, even if the answer was simply that he'd misunderstood.

My mother spoke quietly.

"Your sister was worried that you weren't telling us how bad things were."

I turned toward her.

"Did she say I'd asked for money?"

She hesitated.

"She said you needed help."

"Did she say I'd asked?"

"I can't remember exactly."

I looked at the table.

The wooden surface had a small mark near the edge.

I'd noticed it during family dinners years earlier.

I used to run my finger over it while my father talked about the future I should be building.

I touched the mark now.

It was a small thing, but it gave me something steady to focus on.

I was beginning to understand that I might never receive one clean explanation.

My family had different memories of the same conversations.

They had made assumptions.

They had passed those assumptions around until they began to sound like facts.

And now, when I asked where the facts had come from, everyone seemed uncertain.

I didn't know whether that uncertainty was genuine.

I couldn't prove that anyone was deliberately hiding something.

But I knew that nobody had asked me directly before deciding what I needed.

I looked at my father.

"I never received any money from you."

He nodded slowly.

"I understand that."

"Then I need you to understand something else. You can't keep discussing my financial situation as if you know it better than I do."

My father opened his mouth.

I continued before he could answer.

"If you want to help my sister, that's your decision. But don't use me as the reason unless you've spoken to me."

My sister crossed her arms.

"Nobody was trying to make you look bad."

"I didn't say you were."

"You keep acting like we've done something terrible."

I looked at her.

"I'm telling you how it felt to hear my own family discussing my life without asking me anything."

She turned away.

My mother reached for her hand, but my sister pulled it back.

The movement was small.

I noticed it anyway.

For a moment, I felt sorry for all of us.

We were sitting around the same table, trying to discuss something that had probably been growing for years.

Nobody seemed certain how to begin.

Nobody wanted to be the person who admitted that the family had made a mistake.

And nobody knew how to move forward without risking another argument.

I understood that feeling.

I had spent years avoiding difficult conversations because I feared they would damage what little peace we had.

But the peace had never been as solid as I wanted to believe.

It depended on me accepting things I didn't understand.

It depended on my father ending discussions when he became uncomfortable.

It depended on my sister believing she knew what was best for me.

It depended on my mother smoothing over the differences.

I had played my part, too.

I had stayed quiet.

I had hidden my successes because I didn't want to invite criticism.

I had avoided explaining my choices because I didn't want to defend them.

That silence had protected me from some arguments.

It had also allowed other people to fill in the gaps.

I looked at my father again.

"I don't want to keep doing this."

He nodded.

"Neither do I."

"Then I need the truth about the money for Fay."

My sister looked up sharply.

My father glanced at her.

The room went quiet again.

I could tell that the conversation had reached something none of us had yet explained.

I waited.

My father took a breath.

"We need to go through the details."

I wanted to ask why they hadn't done that before.

I wanted to demand an amount, a date, and a clear account of every decision.

But I stopped myself.

For once, I had managed to keep the conversation focused on the issue rather than the hurt surrounding it.

I wasn't going to abandon that now.

"All right," I said. "Let's go through them."

My father nodded.

My mother looked down at her hands.

My sister remained silent.

I sat there, waiting for the explanation that should have been given long before I arrived with groceries and overheard a conversation that changed the way I saw my family.

The thirty-nine million dollars in my account remained a secret.

For the moment, that was how I wanted it.

Before I revealed anything about the sale, I needed to understand what my family had believed about me, what they had done because of that belief, and why Fay had become part of the conversation.

I had come to the house wanting an answer.

Now, for the first time, everyone knew I wasn't going to leave without asking for one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: My Father Finally Started Explaining the Money, but Every Answer Raised Another Question About What My Sister Had Told Them

My father didn't begin with the money.
