I want to know why that conversation was connected to me."

"It wasn't necessarily connected to you."

"Then why were you asking about it while my sister was saying I couldn't support myself?"

Another pause.

I could hear him moving around, though I couldn't tell where he was.

Finally, he said, "There are things about this family you don't understand."

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Then explain them."

"It's not as simple as that."

"It doesn't have to be simple. It just has to be honest."

He was silent again.

I had never spoken to him that way before.

Not because I thought honesty was wrong.

Because I had spent years trying to avoid the expression he wore whenever he believed I was being difficult.

I could picture it clearly.

His mouth tightening.

His eyes narrowing slightly.

His attention moving away from the conversation as though he had already decided it wasn't worth continuing.

But this time, I couldn't see him.

I only had his voice.

"You need to be patient," he said.

"I have been patient."

"I know you think you've been treated unfairly."

I almost interrupted.

Then I stopped.

He wasn't answering the question, but I wanted to hear where he was going.

"Your sister has had a lot to deal with," he continued. "Your mother and I have tried to help where we could."

"I understand helping her."

"Then I don't see what the problem is."

"The problem is that I heard you discussing money for Fay while my sister was telling you I couldn't support myself. I don't know what either of those things has to do with me."

He let out a breath.

"I can't explain everything right now."

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the old pickup sat where I'd parked it.

I had spent years using that truck as a practical tool.

My family had turned it into a symbol of everything they thought I lacked.

I wasn't going to let that happen to this conversation.

"All right," I said. "When can you explain it?"

"I'll speak to you when I've had time to think."

I didn't like the answer.

But I accepted it.

"Please don't leave it for weeks."

"I won't."

We ended the call.

I sat quietly for a while.

It wasn't a satisfying conversation.

It wasn't even much of a conversation.

But my father had finally acknowledged that there were things I didn't understand, and he had said he would speak to me again.

I couldn't decide whether that was progress.

I put the phone down and looked at the notes on the table.

I had almost told him about the farm sale.

The words had come close to leaving my mouth more than once.

I wanted him to know that the person he believed needed help had just completed a sale worth thirty-nine million dollars.

I wanted to see whether that changed his tone.

But I had stopped myself.

The sale was not a weapon.

If I used it to win the argument, I would never know whether he had understood the real issue.

I would only know that the number had surprised him.

That wasn't enough.

I needed to know what he believed about me before he knew the money was there.

The next day, my sister sent a message.

She asked whether I was still upset about the conversation at the house.

I read it slowly.

I thought about replying that I wasn't upset, only confused.

But that wouldn't have been entirely true.

I was upset.

I was hurt that my family seemed to have a version of my life that I had never been allowed to correct.

I was angry that a simple question had turned into something everyone wanted to avoid.

And I was ashamed of how much I still wanted their approval.

I wrote back that I wanted an honest explanation.

She didn't reply immediately.

When her answer came, it was short.

She said our parents were trying to do what they thought was best.

I stared at the screen.

That might have been true.

It still didn't answer my question.

I put the phone away.

For years, I had believed that my family misunderstood me because I kept my life private.

Now I wondered whether privacy had only been part of the problem.

Maybe the bigger problem was that everyone had grown comfortable with the story they told about me.

They didn't need to ask how I was doing.

They already believed they knew.

And I had allowed that belief to stand because correcting it seemed exhausting.

I couldn't change that history.

But I could stop feeding it.

I would not announce the sale simply to force my family to revise their opinions.

I would not apologize for asking questions.

And I would not accept concern as a substitute for honesty.

The money in my account gave me freedom I had never experienced before.

But freedom wasn't just being able to buy something without checking the price.

It was being able to face a difficult conversation without worrying that I might lose the approval I had spent years trying to earn.

I was still learning how to do that.

I didn't know what my father would say when he finally explained the money.

I didn't know whether my sister would tell me the truth.

And I didn't know what Fay's place in the situation really was.

But I knew I was finished pretending I hadn't heard that conversation.

The next time my family spoke about my life, I wanted to be part of the discussion.

Not because I needed permission.

Because it was my life, and I had a right to know what they were saying about it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: My Father Promised to Explain the Money, but the Longer I Waited, the More I Feared He Already Knew Something I Didn’t

By the end of that week, I had stopped expecting an explanation to arrive on its own.
