I was standing at the door."

"You could have knocked."

"I could have."

The answer seemed to irritate her.

"Then you should have."

I looked at the kitchen counter.

The grocery bags were gone, but I could still picture them sitting there when I'd returned home.

"I didn't want to interrupt."

"Well, you did anyway."

I let that pass.

"Can you tell me what the money was for?"

She gave a short, impatient laugh.

"That's between me and our parents."

"Then why was Dad asking about it in connection with me?"

"He wasn't."

"I heard him."

"You heard a few words. You don't know the whole situation."

I recognized that response.

It was the same kind of answer my father had given me.

A few words.

Not the whole situation.

A family matter.

Everything was being described as something I wasn't entitled to understand.

I tried to keep my voice steady.

"Then help me understand."

She didn't answer.

I asked another question.

"Have you told them I'm unable to support myself?"

"Why would you ask that?"

"Because that's what you were saying when I arrived."

Her breathing changed.

I could hear a faint sound in the background, something moving across a hard surface.

When she spoke again, her voice was sharper.

"You've always been sensitive about money."

I looked down at my hands.

There it was.

The old explanation.

If I objected to her comments, I was sensitive.

If I asked for details, I was making things difficult.

If I stayed quiet, she could continue telling the story however she wanted.

"I asked you a question," I said.

"And I told you that you don't know everything."

"Then tell me what I'm missing."

She sighed.

"You're making this into something it isn't."

I had heard that sentence in different forms for years.

Whenever I questioned an assumption, the problem became my reaction.

Not the assumption.

Not the missing information.

My reaction.

I almost ended the call.

Then I remembered how long I'd waited to ask.

I wasn't going to leave without making the point clear.

"I've never asked our parents for money. I've never received money from them through you, either."

"Nobody said you did."

"Dad asked how much they'd already given for Fay."

"That has nothing to do with you."

"Then why was I being discussed as someone who can't support himself?"

My sister didn't answer immediately.

When she did, she sounded tired.

"Because everyone worries about you."

I closed my eyes.

There was a time when I might have accepted that answer.

It sounded caring.

It sounded like the kind of thing a family said when they wanted to help.

But worry didn't explain the money.

And concern didn't explain why my father seemed to be checking an arrangement that I had never known existed.

"I don't need anyone to speak for me," I said.

"That's easy to say."

"No. It's easy to say I'm struggling. That's what you've been doing."

She became defensive.

"I've never said anything that wasn't true."

I wanted to ask her which truth she meant.

The truth about my finances?

The truth about Fay?

The truth about money my parents had given her?

Instead, I asked one question.

"Have you told them I've asked for financial help?"

She didn't answer.

The silence was long enough that I began to wonder whether the call had dropped.

Then she spoke.

"You're twisting everything."

I felt the familiar urge to defend myself.

I wanted to explain how hard I'd worked, how carefully I'd managed my expenses, and how little anyone in the family knew about the actual state of my affairs.

But I stopped.

None of those details answered the question.

I didn't need to prove that I was successful.

I needed to know whether she had misrepresented me.

"I haven't told you what I think happened," I said. "I'm asking what you told them."

She let out a breath.

"I don't have time for this."

"Neither do I."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she ended the call.

I sat with the phone in my hand.

The conversation had left me with more questions than answers.

Still, it had changed the way I understood my sister.

She had not been surprised that I asked about the money.

She had not offered a straightforward explanation.

And when I asked whether she'd told our parents I needed financial help, she hadn't given me a clear answer.

I couldn't claim to know what that meant.

But I could no longer pretend that everything was simply a misunderstanding caused by my silence.

I set the phone on the table.

My sister had spent years telling our parents what she thought my life looked like.

I had spent years refusing to argue.

Perhaps I had made it easy for her.

That was something I needed to own.

But it didn't make me responsible for anything she might have told them.

I thought about calling my father again.

Then I decided against it.

I had already asked him for an explanation.

I had asked my sister, too.

Neither had given me one.

If I continued calling, I would probably hear the same phrases repeated until I grew angry enough to say something I regretted.

I wasn't going to do that.

Instead, I made a decision.

I would keep the sale private.

I would stop trying to prove myself through arguments.

And I would no longer accept vague assurances in place of answers.

If my parents wanted to discuss the money, I would listen.

If my sister wanted to explain what she had been telling them, I would listen to that, too.

But I wasn't going to pretend I had misunderstood simply because the truth made someone uncomfortable.

That evening, I took a walk outside.

The air was cool, and the ground beneath my boots was uneven.

I thought about the farm I'd sold and the years I'd spent there.

I had once believed that selling it would be the hardest decision I'd ever made.

It turned out that leaving the land behind was easier than facing the questions I'd carried home from my parents' porch.

The sale had ended one chapter of my life.

Whatever was happening in my family belonged to another.

And I was beginning to understand that money alone wouldn't settle it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The More My Family Avoided My Questions, the More I Wondered What They Believed They Had Done in My Name

I called my sister the next day.
