3 – Thirty-Nine Million Dollars Could Buy Me Freedom, but It Couldn’t Explain Why My Parents Thought They Had Been Helping Me

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

For a few seconds, I forgot about the previous afternoon.

Then I remembered my father's voice.

How much have we already given her for Fay?

I lay still, staring at the ceiling.

The question returned exactly as I'd heard it.

I had hoped sleep would make the whole thing seem less troubling.

It didn't.

I got up, washed, and made coffee.

My old routine carried me through the first part of the morning.

I checked what needed checking.

I straightened a few things that didn't need straightening.

I found myself looking at my phone more often than I wanted to admit.

There were no new messages from my parents.

My sister hadn't contacted me, either.

That silence didn't prove anything.

People had their own lives, and no one was required to call me every morning.

Still, I wondered whether they had noticed that I left without knocking.

Had my mother looked outside and seen the truck gone?

Had my father asked where the groceries were?

Had my sister mentioned that I might have overheard them?

I had no way to know.

I returned to the kitchen and poured another cup of coffee.

The farm sale had been completed only days earlier, but the number in my account still seemed strange.

Thirty-nine million dollars.

I had checked the figures more than once.

I knew what the transaction meant.

I knew the sale had changed what I could afford and what I might do next.

But money was only money.

It couldn't tell me whether my father respected me.

It couldn't tell me whether my sister had been honest.

And it couldn't explain why my parents were discussing financial help that had never reached me.

I could have used the sale as an excuse to announce everything.

I could have called my parents and said I no longer needed their concern.

I could have told my sister that she had been wrong about me.

The temptation was stronger than I expected.

There was a part of me that wanted to see their expressions when they learned the truth.

I imagined my father going quiet.

I imagined my sister searching for something to say.

I imagined the questions that might follow.

How had I managed it?

Why hadn't I told them?

What was I going to do with the money?

For one brief moment, I enjoyed the idea of having all the answers while they had none.

Then I felt ashamed.

I had spent years resenting the way my family judged me.

If I used the money to humiliate them, I would be doing the same thing in reverse.

I didn't want to become that kind of person.

I wanted to understand what had happened.

That was different.

So I decided to leave the sale out of any conversation until I knew more.

The money would remain private.

For now, at least.

I began thinking about the years when my family had been most concerned about my finances.

There had been plenty of comments.

My father once asked whether I could afford the upkeep on the farm.

My sister had suggested that I needed to be realistic about my income.

My mother sometimes looked at me with the expression people use when they want to offer help but are afraid of causing offense.

I had always assumed those moments came from worry.

Perhaps some of them had.

But I was no longer certain that everyone had been responding to the same information.

If my parents believed they were helping me, someone must have given them a reason to believe it.

I tried to remember a time when I had asked for money.

I couldn't think of one.

I tried to remember a conversation in which I'd told my sister I couldn't pay my bills.

Nothing came to mind.

There had been difficult periods, but I had handled them myself.

I had never told my family that I was unable to support myself.

I had never asked them to send money on my behalf.

And I had never received a payment from them that could explain my father's question.

The thought made my stomach tighten.

Maybe my sister had asked them for money for a different reason.

Maybe Fay needed something.

Maybe my parents had agreed to help and had simply used my circumstances as part of the explanation.

I couldn't know.

The name kept returning to me.

Fay.

I tried to remember every time I'd heard it mentioned.

I knew the name, but I couldn't connect it to the conversation with any confidence.

I wasn't going to invent an explanation just because I wanted one.

If I wanted the truth, I would have to be patient enough to let the facts take shape.

That was easier to say than to do.

By midday, I had checked my phone so many times that I finally put it in another room.

I worked through a few things that had been waiting for my attention.

The familiar tasks helped.

There was something comforting about dealing with problems that had clear answers.

A piece of equipment either worked or it didn't.

A bill had either been paid or it hadn't.

A number either matched the record or it didn't.

Family was rarely that simple.

I thought about the way my father looked at my truck during family gatherings.

For years, I had treated that look as a verdict.

He saw an old vehicle and assumed I was falling behind.

He saw the clothes I wore and assumed I lacked ambition.

He saw a man who didn't talk about money and concluded there wasn't much worth discussing.

Maybe he had never understood that I preferred to keep my life quiet.

Maybe I had made that misunderstanding easier by refusing to explain myself.

Looking back, I could admit that I wasn't always easy to talk to.

When people criticized my choices, I shut down.

When my father offered advice, I sometimes answered too sharply.

When my sister questioned my decisions, I stopped giving her details.

I had built a wall and then wondered why nobody knew what was happening on the other side.

But a wall didn't explain the money.

If my parents had been helping someone in connection with me, that was a separate matter.

They could have asked me directly.

They could have told me what they were doing.

They could have checked whether the money had reached its intended destination.

Instead, my father had asked my sister how much they had already given for Fay.

I couldn't stop hearing the way he said it.

There was no uncertainty in the question.

He sounded as though the arrangement already existed.

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table again.

The same table.

The same chair.

The same phone lying beside my hand.

I considered calling my father.

I even picked up the phone.

His number was familiar enough that I didn't need to search for it.

I pictured him answering and asking what was wrong.

I pictured myself explaining that I'd been at the house the day before.

Then I'd have to tell him I'd heard the conversation.

He would ask what I meant.

I would repeat his question about the money.

And everything would depend on his response.

Would he be embarrassed?

Would he deny it?

Would he tell me that I'd misunderstood?

Or would he explain something that made the entire situation look different?

I couldn't know until I asked.

But I wasn't ready to make that call without thinking through what I needed to learn.

The sale had given me a financial cushion I had never had before.

That meant I didn't need to make a decision out of fear.

I didn't need to agree with anyone to keep the peace.

I didn't need to reveal my account balance to prove I was doing well.

For once, I could let a question remain unanswered until I was ready to face it.

I set the phone down.

I would speak to my family when I could do so without turning the conversation into a contest.

Until then, I would keep the sale private and pay attention to what they actually said.

Not what I hoped they meant.

Not what I feared they meant.

What they said.

That was the only place I could start.

Before going to bed, I looked at the message on my phone one more time.

I had read it so often that I knew where every line fell on the screen.

It had seemed like an ordinary message when I first saw it.

Now, after hearing my father's question, I couldn't look at it the same way.

The money in my account was no longer the only fact I needed to understand.

I needed to find out why my family believed I was receiving help when I had never asked for it.

And I needed to know what Fay had to do with the story they'd been telling about me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Had Spent Fifteen Years Letting My Family Decide
