Nobody believed the note.<\/p>\n
We had watched Ernesto\u2019s coffin being lowered into the ground.<\/p>\n
We had mourned him for fifteen years.<\/p>\n
We had just heard recordings made before his murder.<\/p>\n
But Isabella stared at those four words without blinking.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s telling the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Julian shook his head.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou saw him die.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI saw him collapse,\u201d Isabella replied. \u201cDr. Keller took his body before the police arrived. I never saw him again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adrian survived because Patricia\u2019s bullet struck the metal recorder hidden beneath his coat. The wound was painful, but not fatal.<\/p>\n
While paramedics treated him, police surrounded the cemetery.<\/p>\n
Ernesto\u2019s grave was opened before sunrise.<\/p>\n
The coffin was still there.<\/p>\n
The locks were broken.<\/p>\n
Inside was the suit Ernesto had worn at his funeral.<\/p>\n
His watch.<\/p>\n
His wedding ring.<\/p>\n
But there was no body.<\/p>\n
Only another envelope.<\/p>\n
It had been placed beneath the white satin lining.<\/p>\n
My name was written across the front.<\/p>\n
I opened it with shaking hands.<\/p>\n
Inside was a letter dated three days after Ernesto\u2019s supposed death.<\/p>\n

I survived the poison because Isabella warned me. Dr. Keller slowed my heartbeat with medication and declared me dead before Ricardo could finish what he started.<\/p>\n
I wanted to return.<\/p>\n

Ricardo and Patricia were only pieces on the board.<\/p>\n
Someone else controlled them.<\/p>\n

Julian called his phone.<\/p>\n
A ringtone sounded from inside the open coffin.<\/p>\n
His phone lay beneath Ernesto\u2019s empty suit.<\/p>\n
Beside it was a fresh photograph.<\/p>\n
Gabriel stood inside a hospital room.<\/p>\n
Behind him, an elderly man lay unconscious in bed.<\/p>\n
Even after fifteen years, I recognized Ernesto immediately.<\/p>\n
On the back of the photograph was an address and a message:<\/p>\n
COME BEFORE MIDNIGHT, OR HE DIES FOR REAL.<\/p>\n
Then Adrian noticed something in the corner of the image.<\/p>\n
A mirror.<\/p>\n
Reflected in it was the person taking the photograph.<\/p>\n
My mother.<\/p>\n
She was supposed to be inside the ambulance.<\/p>\n
But when we turned toward the road, the ambulance doors stood open.<\/p>\n
The paramedics lay unconscious on the ground.<\/p>\n
And my mother had vanished.<\/p>\n
