19 – My Father Was Still Quiet, My Mother Was Trying, and I Finally Understood That Forgiveness Could Not Mean Returning to the Same Old Place

After talking with Brooke, I needed a little time to myself.

The conversation had brought up more than Christmas.

It had brought up years of small disappointments, many of which I had never fully acknowledged.

I thought about the way our parents had treated us.

I thought about the way Brooke and I had adapted.

I thought about all the times I had said I was fine because I believed the alternative would make me look needy.

I had spent years assuming that if I became independent enough, the old family roles would stop affecting me.

They had not.

I had simply learned to hide the effects.

Now I was trying to understand what it meant to move forward without pretending the past had been harmless.

I did not want to punish my parents.

I did not want to keep score with Brooke.

I did not want every family gathering to become an examination of who had received more attention.

But I also did not want to return to the old arrangement in which I carried the uncomfortable feelings so everyone else could remain comfortable.

There had to be another way.

I thought about forgiveness.

For a long time, I had treated forgiveness as a decision to stop talking about something painful.

If I accepted an apology, I was supposed to move on.

If I understood someone's intentions, I was supposed to stop feeling hurt.

If I wanted the relationship to continue, I was supposed to make things easy again.

That was how I had handled many disappointments.

I was beginning to see that forgiveness did not have to mean forgetting what had happened.

It did not have to mean agreeing that the situation was acceptable.

And it certainly did not have to mean taking responsibility for making sure the same thing never happened again.

I could forgive my mother for believing Brooke without pretending it had been right to do so.

I could care about my father without acting as if his silence did not matter.

I could love Brooke without assuming that our relationship would improve simply because I wanted it to.

I could give each of them room to change.

I could also pay attention to whether they did.

That was not bitterness.

It was honesty.

My mother continued to reach out.

Sometimes we talked about ordinary things.

Sometimes she asked how I was feeling.

I noticed the difference.

I appreciated it.

There were moments when I still felt cautious, especially when a conversation approached something uncomfortable.

I wondered whether she would listen if I told her I was disappointed again.

I wondered whether she would remember that my being capable did not mean I never needed her.

I did not know yet.

I was learning not to demand the answer before the next conversation happened.

My father remained the harder part.

I still had not heard him speak directly about the Christmas program.

I had not heard him explain why he had accepted the idea that I was not celebrating.

I did not know whether he understood how much the decision had hurt.

Sometimes I felt angry with him.

Sometimes I felt sad.

Sometimes I wanted to call and tell him everything I had been thinking.

Then I remembered that I had spent years starting conversations I wished he would start himself.

I was tired of being the only person who tried to bridge the distance.

I did not want to close the door.

I simply wanted him to walk toward it sometimes.

That was a reasonable thing to want.

I had to remind myself of that whenever I began feeling guilty for not calling.

I was not withholding love.

I was allowing the relationship to show me whether he was willing to participate.

Those were different things.

One evening, I sat near the fire and thought about the first message I had sent before Christmas.

“All good.”

I remembered how quickly I had typed it.

I had wanted to appear calm.

I had wanted to show that I would not beg.

I had wanted to avoid the humiliation of admitting how much I wanted my parents to come.

But I had also been hoping that they would somehow understand the hurt I had not expressed.

That was the contradiction.

I had wanted to be understood without making myself vulnerable.

I had wanted them to ask questions while giving them answers that discouraged further conversation.

I could see my own part in that now.

It did not excuse their choices.

It helped me understand why the pattern had lasted so long.

I had made myself easy to overlook because I believed that asking to be noticed would cost me my dignity.

Now I was learning that honesty was not the same as begging.

Telling my mother that I had been hurt had not made me weak.

Asking Brooke to explain what happened had not made me difficult.

Wanting my father to call did not mean I had failed at independence.

I could admit those things without surrendering my self-respect.

That realization changed how I thought about the next family gathering.

I no longer wanted to arrive determined to prove that I was fine.

I wanted to arrive as myself.

If somebody asked about the business, I could answer.

If somebody asked about the house, I could share what I enjoyed about it.

If something hurt me, I could say so.

I did not need to turn every moment into a confrontation.

I also did not need to pretend nothing had changed.

I could let the relationships develop at a human pace.

There would be awkward moments.

There would probably be misunderstandings.

I might still feel the old disappointment when my parents focused on Brooke.

I might still catch myself shrinking my own needs.

The difference would be what I did next.

I could notice the feeling.

I could decide whether it needed to be discussed.

I could speak honestly rather than waiting for someone to guess.

And if the other person was unwilling to listen, I could accept that without spending the next week trying to find the perfect sentence that would finally make them understand.

I had done enough of that.

I looked around the room.

The house had become a reminder of everything I had built on my own.

But it was also a reminder that independence had never meant I wanted to be alone.

I had created a home because I wanted somewhere to live.

I had invited my friends because I wanted to share the holiday.

I had hoped my parents would come because I loved them.

None of those things was a contradiction.

I could be proud of my independence and still want connection.

I could forgive people and still expect them to treat me differently.

I could love my family without accepting every role they had assigned me.

That was the balance I wanted to find.

I did not know whether my father would eventually call.

I did not know whether Brooke and I would become closer.

I did not know how long it would take my mother to turn her new understanding into a lasting habit.

I could not answer those questions by thinking harder.

I would have to let time and their choices provide the answers.

For now, I had done my part.

I had told the truth.

I had listened.

I had stopped pretending that being independent meant I was unaffected.

The rest could not be forced.

I leaned back and watched the fire.

For the first time, the uncertainty did not feel like a problem I had to solve before I could move forward.

It was simply part of what came next.

<a
