17 – I Had Finally Stopped Treating My Parents’ Approval as Proof of My Worth, but I Still Needed to Hear the Truth From My Sister

I thought I had reached a kind of peace.

Not the sort where everything had been forgiven and everybody understood each other.

Just the kind where I could wake up without immediately wondering what my family thought of me.

It was a start.

I was working, spending time in the house, and getting back into a routine that felt like my own.

My mother and I had been talking more often.

My father remained quiet about Christmas.

And Brooke's explanation still hung over everything.

I had tried not to let that last part consume my thoughts.

I had reminded myself that I did not know what she had intended.

I had also reminded myself that not knowing did not mean I had to accept the situation forever.

At some point, I would need to speak to her.

I could not keep building theories around a conversation that had never happened.

The trouble was that Brooke and I had never been particularly good at discussing the things that mattered most.

We could talk about ordinary family news.

We could exchange polite messages.

We could ask how the other person was doing and accept a short answer.

But when a conversation threatened to expose an old imbalance between us, one of us usually found a way to move on.

Sometimes that person was Brooke.

Sometimes it was me.

I had spent years telling myself that keeping the peace was the same as protecting our relationship.

I was beginning to question that.

A relationship that depended on one person swallowing every uncomfortable feeling was not especially peaceful.

It was simply quiet.

One afternoon, I found myself looking at my phone while standing near the kitchen counter.

I had opened Brooke's contact without intending to.

I could have sent a message asking whether she had a minute to talk.

Instead, I locked the screen.

I was not ready to begin the conversation just because I happened to be thinking about it.

I wanted to approach her when I could listen without trying to control the answer.

That mattered to me.

I did not want to turn a question into an accusation.

I also did not want to apologize for asking it.

The next day, I decided I was ready.

I sent Brooke a short message asking if we could talk about Christmas.

I did not include a long explanation.

I did not tell her what I suspected.

I simply asked.

Her reply did not arrive immediately.

I put the phone down and went back to work.

For once, I did not keep checking the screen.

When the message eventually came, I read it carefully.

She was willing to talk.

We arranged a time.

That was all we agreed on.

I felt nervous afterward.

I had wanted this conversation, but wanting it did not make it easy.

I knew how quickly I could slip into old habits.

I could start by asking one question and end up explaining my entire childhood.

I could become so focused on proving that I had a reason to be hurt that I stopped listening to what Brooke was actually saying.

I could also become uncomfortable and retreat into the familiar answer.

No problem.

All good.

Let's forget it.

I did not want to do any of those things.

I wanted to know what had happened.

And I wanted to give myself permission to respond honestly to whatever I learned.

When the time came, I sat down and took a breath before starting the conversation.

I asked Brooke what she had understood about my Christmas plans.

I told her that our parents had said she believed I was not celebrating the holiday.

I wanted to know how that impression had formed.

I did not accuse her of deliberately keeping them away.

I did not claim to know what she had been thinking.

I asked her to explain.

For a moment, I was painfully aware of the space between us.

We were sisters.

We had grown up in the same family.

We had spent years living with the same parents and the same expectations.

Yet there were things about our relationship that we had never discussed openly.

I had learned to be the easy one.

Brooke had become the one who received more attention.

Neither of us had ever sat down and agreed to those roles.

They had simply become part of the way our family operated.

I did not want this conversation to become an argument about which of us had suffered more.

That was not what I needed.

I needed to know what Brooke had said, what she had believed, and whether she understood why the decision had hurt me.

I listened to her response.

I tried not to interrupt.

I reminded myself that an explanation might be complicated.

It might not match the story I had built in my head.

It might even reveal that some part of the situation had been misunderstood by more than one person.

I had to leave room for that.

But I also had to leave room for my own experience.

Whatever Brooke had meant, our parents had made a choice based on what they believed she had told them.

They had not checked with me.

I had spent Christmas with that knowledge.

I was not going to pretend it had not mattered.

I told Brooke that I had wanted our parents to visit.

I explained that the house meant a great deal to me and that I had hoped to share it with them.

I told her I had been hurt when they chose her plans instead.

Then I explained what happened when my mother called after the Christmas special.

The conversation had made me realize that my parents had not only chosen something else.

They had believed I had no holiday gathering of my own.

That was the part I could not understand.

I wanted Brooke to hear it without assuming I was asking her to compete with me.

I was not trying to take anything away from her.

I was trying to stop losing things I had never asked her to take.

There was a long pause.

I let it remain.

For once, I did not rush to make the silence comfortable.

I did not offer an excuse for Brooke.

I did not tell her that it was all right before I knew what she was going to say.

I waited.

Whatever answer came next, I wanted to hear it clearly.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: My Sister and
