10 – My Mother Had Started Asking Questions, but I Was Afraid of Mistaking a Few Careful Messages for the Change I Had Wanted for Years

The messages from my mother continued.

Not every day.

Not in a way that felt forced.

Sometimes she asked about work.

Sometimes she asked whether I had been getting enough rest.

Once, she asked whether I was spending much time in the greenhouse.

I answered her honestly.

At first, I kept my replies short.

I was afraid of getting my hopes up.

That fear embarrassed me.

My mother was my mother.

She was asking questions about my life.

Why should I have to treat that as something dangerous?

Because I knew how much I wanted it to mean.

I wanted the messages to be evidence that she had understood what I told her during the Christmas call.

I wanted to believe that she had started looking at me differently.

But I had learned that wanting something to be true did not make it true.

So I tried to pay attention without making promises to myself.

When she asked about the greenhouse, I told her I had been spending time there.

When she asked about work, I gave her an answer that included more than the fact that I was busy.

When she asked whether I had enjoyed Christmas, I told her I had.

I also told her that I had been hurt when I learned why they had stayed away.

She did not argue.

She said she understood.

I wanted to ask whether she truly understood or whether she was trying to keep the conversation peaceful.

I decided not to turn every exchange into a test.

If I asked a question, I wanted to ask because I genuinely needed an answer.

I did not want to spend the rest of my life setting traps that other people could not see.

That was another habit I needed to change.

When someone had disappointed me, I sometimes watched their next move so closely that nothing they did could feel natural.

If they called, I wondered why they had waited.

If they did not call, I took it as proof that they did not care.

If they asked a question, I wondered whether they were only asking because I had complained.

I understood where that suspicion came from.

It had not appeared out of nowhere.

But I did not want it to become the only way I knew how to relate to people.

I wanted to leave room for genuine effort.

I also wanted to stop confusing effort with a guarantee.

Both mattered.

My father remained quiet.

I did not receive a message from him about the program.

He did not ask about the house.

He did not mention Christmas.

For several days, I told myself I did not care.

Then I caught myself wondering whether my mother had told him what we discussed.

I wondered whether he had been thinking about it.

I wondered whether he wanted to call but did not know what to say.

I had no way to know.

I was filling the silence with possibilities.

I recognized the habit and tried to stop.

My father was responsible for his own words.

If he wanted to talk to me, he knew how to reach me.

I did not need to invent his side of the conversation before he had spoken.

Still, I missed him.

That was the truth beneath my frustration.

I missed the father I had sometimes imagined I would have when I was older.

The one who would ask about my work because he wanted to understand it.

The one who would visit my home and take his time looking around.

The one who would recognize that the daughter who seemed capable of everything could still want him to show up.

I did not know whether that version of our relationship was possible.

I knew only that I had wanted it for a long time.

One evening, I sat near the windows with a cup of coffee and looked out toward the mountains.

The glass reflected the room behind me.

I could see the beams overhead and the soft light from the living room.

It was the same view that had appeared in the Christmas program.

I wondered whether my father had noticed the details or only the broad impression of the property.

Then I stopped myself.

I was doing it again.

I was trying to picture his reaction instead of experiencing my own life.

I put the cup down and looked outside.

The mountains were there whether anyone admired them or not.

The house was mine whether my father understood its value or not.

I had spent years making this place real.

I could let it belong to me.

That did not mean I had stopped wanting to share it.

It meant I did not need to wait for my parents before enjoying what I had made.

A few days later, my mother asked whether I would be willing to talk more about Christmas.

I read the message carefully.

She said she had been thinking about our conversation.

She wanted to understand what I had felt when I learned that she and Dad believed Brooke.

My first reaction was relief.

My second was caution.

I wanted to tell her everything.

I wanted to explain the years of feeling like the daughter who could be left until later.

I wanted to tell her how often I had chosen silence because I believed that speaking honestly would make me look needy.

I wanted her to understand that the Christmas decision had hurt because it belonged to a much longer pattern.

But I knew I could not force years of feeling into one conversation and expect her to absorb it all.

I also knew that if I tried to explain everything at once, I might start talking faster, giving examples, defending details, and trying to prove that my feelings were justified.

I had done that before.

I did not want to turn honesty into a courtroom argument.

So I took my time before answering.

I told her I was willing to talk.

I told her I wanted us to be honest with each other.

And I told her I did not want the conversation to become a discussion about whether I had a right to be hurt.

She replied that she understood.

We agreed to speak when we both had time to listen.

I put the phone down.

My hands felt tense.

I had wanted this opportunity for years.

Now that it was approaching, I was afraid of what might happen if I said too much or too little.

I was afraid she would misunderstand me.

I was afraid I would soften the truth until it no longer sounded like the truth.

I was afraid that, after everything, we would return to the same comfortable silence.

But I was also tired of allowing fear to make every decision.

I could not control how my mother received what I said.

I could control whether I spoke honestly.

That was enough for now.

I went back to work.

Later, I walked through the greenhouse and checked the plants.

The quiet helped me settle.

I thought about the difference between being understood and being agreed with.

My mother did not have to remember every event exactly as I remembered it.

She did not have to see every family decision through my eyes.

But she did need to listen without dismissing the feelings I was trying to explain.

And I needed to listen, too.

I needed to hear what she had believed, what she had misunderstood, and what she was willing to acknowledge.

A conversation could not guarantee that we would see things the same way.

It could tell me whether we were willing to try.

That was what I wanted to learn.

When I returned to the house, I checked my phone once more.

There was no new message.

For once, I did not take that as a sign of anything.

The conversation would happen when it happened.

I had work to do.

I had a home to enjoy.

And I had finally begun to understand that waiting for an answer did not require me to put my life on hold.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Prepared to Tell My Mother What Her Choices Had Taught Me, Knowing That the
