Busy. All good.

Instead, I told her a little about what I had been working on.

I mentioned a challenge I had been trying to solve.

I did not write an essay.

I did not list every detail.

I gave her an honest answer and left room for her to respond.

She asked a follow-up question.

I stared at the screen for a moment.

It was such a small thing that I almost dismissed it.

Then I answered.

We exchanged a few more messages.

The conversation was not remarkable.

But she had asked, and I had answered without immediately shrinking the truth into something easier to ignore.

I was glad I had done that.

I did not decide that my mother had changed overnight.

I did not tell myself that the relationship was suddenly repaired.

I simply let the exchange be what it was.

A small opening.

Something that might lead somewhere, or might not.

I was learning to leave room for that uncertainty.

The next day, I found myself thinking about Brooke.

I still did not know why she had told our parents I was not celebrating Christmas.

I could imagine several explanations, but imagining them did not make any of them true.

I had no interest in inventing a motive and then treating it as a fact.

If Brooke had misunderstood my plans, she could explain that.

If she had assumed I would be alone, I wanted to know why.

If she had knowingly given our parents the wrong impression, I wanted to understand what had happened.

But I was not going to conduct a private trial in my head.

I had done enough of that with my family.

For years, I had replayed conversations, searching for the precise moment when I could have said something differently.

I had tried to anticipate how everyone would react.

I had rewritten my own words until I could imagine a version of the conversation in which nobody felt uncomfortable.

It had never worked for long.

I could not think my way into knowing what another person intended.

I needed them to tell me.

And if they would not, I would have to accept the limits of what I knew.

That was difficult for someone who liked to solve problems.

It was also necessary.

A few days later, I walked through the living room and noticed the television sitting quietly against the wall.

I remembered the Christmas special.

I remembered the moment I recognized my own house on the screen.

I remembered the way my mother's voice had sounded when she admitted that she and my father had not understood what I had built.

For a while, I had thought that moment would become the beginning of something new.

I still hoped it might.

But I no longer wanted the house to serve as proof that I deserved attention.

I wanted my parents to know me, not just admire the result of my work.

The difference mattered more each day.

I had spent years believing success would make my family understand me.

Now I was beginning to see that success could only show them what I had accomplished.

Understanding required something else.

It required listening.

It required questions.

It required the willingness to hear an answer that might be more complicated than expected.

I could offer those things to my family.

I could not offer them on everybody else's behalf.

That evening, I turned off the television and went to prepare dinner.

The room fell quiet.

I did not feel the need to fill the silence.

For once, it was enough to know that I had said what I meant and left the next step where it belonged.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Mother Had Started Asking Questions, but I Was Afraid of Mistaking a Few Careful Messages for the Change I Had Wanted for Years

I made it through another week without asking my father about the Christmas program.
