16 – I Finally Stopped Trying to Guess What My Husband Had Wanted and Began Asking What His Decisions Meant for Me Now That He Was Gone

There was a point during the conversation when I realized I had been asking the same question in different ways.

Why had he sent me here?

Why hadn't he told me before he died?

Why had he chosen Daniel?

Why had he made arrangements for our children that seemed so clear while leaving me with so much uncertainty?

Every question came back to the same place.

I wanted to know what my husband had been thinking.

I wanted him to explain himself.

And I wanted to understand why the man I had trusted had left me to do that work alone.

But he was dead.

No amount of questioning Daniel could change that.

I had to find a way to listen to the information that remained without expecting it to replace the conversation I could no longer have.

That realization did not bring peace.

It brought a different kind of sadness.

I had spent the day searching for an explanation that might make me feel as though I still knew my husband.

Now I was beginning to accept that knowing someone and understanding every decision they make are not the same thing.

I had known my husband for years.

I had loved him.

I had raised our children with him.

Those things were not erased because he had made arrangements I did not understand.

But neither did those things guarantee that I knew everything he had thought or planned.

I needed to accept both truths.

Daniel finished explaining a point and waited to see whether I had a question.

I did.

I asked whether my husband's arrangements left me with any obligation I needed to consider before making my own decisions.

Daniel explained what he could about the next steps and made it clear that I should understand the information before deciding how to proceed.

I nodded.

That was the kind of answer I needed.

Not reassurance.

Not speculation.

Information I could use.

I had been so focused on what my husband might have meant that I had almost forgotten to ask what I was supposed to do now.

My life had not ended when his did.

I was still a mother.

I still had responsibilities.

I still had a future, even if I couldn't yet imagine what it would look like.

I needed to think about those things.

I also needed to stop treating my husband's decisions as though they were commands I had no right to question.

He had made the arrangements.

I could listen to them.

I could consider them.

I could decide whether they made sense.

That was my responsibility now.

I looked down at my hands.

They were resting quietly on the table.

I had not realized how tightly I had been holding them together until I noticed that they had relaxed.

For the first time, I felt able to sit in the room without preparing myself for a fight.

I still had questions.

I still felt angry.

But I was no longer trying to turn every answer into a judgment about my marriage.

I could let Daniel explain the facts.

I could decide what those facts meant to me afterward.

I asked him whether my husband had expected me to understand everything immediately.

Daniel could not give me a definite answer about that.

I nodded.

I had stopped expecting him to know things he had never been told.

I thought about how much easier it would have been if my husband had spoken to me directly.

He could have told me why he wanted me to travel.

He could have explained what I would be expected to do.

He could have given me the chance to ask questions while he was still alive.

I was not going to pretend that the way he had handled things was painless.

It wasn't.

I had arrived in Costa Rica feeling abandoned by someone who was no longer alive to hear me say it.

That feeling was real, even if I did not yet understand his intentions.

I needed to give myself permission to acknowledge the hurt without allowing it to decide every conclusion.

I looked at Daniel.

"I wish he had trusted me enough to let me be part of the decision."

Daniel listened.

I didn't need him to answer that statement.

It wasn't a question about the arrangements.

It was something I needed to say aloud.

For years, I had believed that our marriage gave us a place to bring difficult things.

We could disagree.

We could be frightened.

We could admit that we didn't know what to do.

We could work through a problem together.

I had believed that was what we had built.

Now I was left wondering whether my husband had stopped believing in that part of our marriage before I realized anything had changed.

I couldn't know.

I would not invent an answer.

But I could admit that the way he had handled his final arrangements had hurt me.

That was enough for now.

I reached into my bag and touched the photograph.

I didn't take it out.

I was beginning to understand that I didn't need to examine it every time I felt uncertain.

It was there.

Whatever it meant, it would still be there when I was ready to look at it again.

I withdrew my hand and returned my attention to Daniel.

He continued explaining the information he had been asked to share.

I listened.

I asked questions when I needed to.

And I stopped apologizing whenever I needed something repeated.

I was not being difficult.

I was trying to understand.

That distinction mattered.

I had spent much of my life making sure other people were comfortable, sometimes at the expense of saying what I needed.

I had told myself that patience was a virtue.

Sometimes it was.

Sometimes it was simply a way to avoid an uncomfortable conversation.

I wondered how many times I had accepted a vague answer because asking another question would have made a difficult moment last longer.

I would never know how much difference that might have made.

But I could change how I handled things now.

I could ask for clarity.

I could admit when I was confused.

I could refuse to agree simply because someone else sounded certain.

Those choices belonged to me.

Daniel paused once more.

He asked whether I understood what he had explained so far.

I took a moment before answering.

"I understand the arrangements better than I did when I arrived."

He nodded.

"But I still don't understand why my husband thought this was the right way to handle things."

Daniel acknowledged that distinction.

I appreciated that he did not confuse understanding the arrangements with accepting the decision.

I wasn't ready to say my husband had been right.

I wasn't ready to say he had been wrong about everything, either.

I needed to hear the rest before making that judgment.

And even then, I might never understand every reason behind his choices.

I looked toward the photograph's place inside my bag.

Then I looked back at Daniel.

I had come to Costa Rica because my husband had left me a question he could no longer answer.

I could not change that.

But I could decide what kind of person I would be while trying to understand it.

I could let grief make me suspicious of everyone.

Or I could remain careful without becoming cruel.

I could blame myself for not knowing what had never been explained.

Or I could accept that trust had been a reasonable choice based on the life I thought we shared.

I could demand that every answer make me feel better.

Or I could listen even when the truth left me uncomfortable.

I didn't know whether I would always manage to make the better choice.

I only knew I wanted to try.

Daniel returned to the papers in front of him.

I sat quietly, ready to continue.

The journey had not given me the answers I wanted.

Not yet.

But it had forced me to face something I had avoided since my husband's death.

I could no longer build my future around the assumption that I already understood everything he had left behind.

I would have to learn what I could.

I would have to ask the questions that mattered.

And when the time came, I would have to decide for myself what to do with the truth.

<a
