The movement of a hand. A pause before a sentence. The way someone looked away when a question became difficult.

I knew those details didn't always mean anything.

Still, I watched.

I had spent too much of the day feeling as though I was the last person to understand what was happening in my own life.

I didn't want to miss anything else.

Daniel explained that there were several matters he wanted to make clear before we went further.

I nodded.

I had stopped expecting one sentence to explain everything.

That was probably a good thing.

My husband had made arrangements that reached beyond an ordinary conversation. I needed to hear what those arrangements involved before deciding what I thought about them.

Daniel began with what he knew directly.

He separated those facts from the things he could only describe as my husband's intentions.

I appreciated the distinction.

It was the first time since arriving that I felt I could listen without constantly wondering whether someone was trying to persuade me to accept a particular version of events.

I asked him to continue.

He did.

I listened carefully, occasionally asking him to clarify a point.

When he finished explaining one part of the arrangements, I sat quietly.

I had expected to feel some great wave of understanding.

Instead, I felt tired.

Not the ordinary tiredness that comes after a long flight.

It was the exhaustion of trying to fit new information into a life I had believed I understood.

I thought about my husband at home.

I pictured him sitting at the kitchen table, looking over papers while I moved around the room doing something else.

I could almost hear him asking whether I had seen his keys.

It was an ordinary memory.

That was why it hurt.

I had never thought that the ordinary parts of our marriage might one day become the things I questioned most.

I had trusted him because I loved him.

I had believed he would tell me if something important affected our family.

I had believed that the decisions we made together were the decisions that mattered.

Now I was learning that he had made choices I had not known about.

I couldn't tell whether that meant he had failed to trust me or whether he had believed he was protecting me from something.

I didn't want to choose the explanation that hurt least.

I wanted the explanation that was true.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did he ever say he was afraid of what I might do?"

Daniel considered the question.

He did not claim to know what my husband had felt privately.

He explained that he could tell me what he had been asked to do, but he could not turn uncertainty into a definite statement about my husband's emotions.

I nodded slowly.

I had asked the question because I wanted to know whether my husband had expected me to refuse the journey.

But I was beginning to see that I had no way to reconstruct his thoughts from fragments.

I could only judge the decisions he had made.

And one of those decisions had been to send me to Costa Rica without telling me why.

I was still angry about that.

I didn't need to excuse it.

I also didn't need to turn it into proof that he had never trusted me.

Both conclusions were too large for the information I had.

I took the photograph from my bag.

I had almost forgotten how often I had handled it during the journey.

The paper had become slightly worn along the edge.

I smoothed it with my thumb.

"There's something about this that I keep coming back to," I said.

Daniel looked toward the photograph.

I asked whether he knew why my husband had wanted me to have it with me.

He did not offer an explanation that settled the question.

I looked at the picture again.

I had carried it because it seemed connected to the reason for the trip, but I couldn't explain the connection.

It was possible I was giving it too much importance.

It was also possible that I had not yet understood why it mattered.

I put it back in my bag.

I would not force it to become a clue simply because I needed something to hold on to.

Daniel continued explaining the arrangements.

I listened, and slowly I began to recognize a difference between what my husband had planned and what he had left for me to decide.

He had arranged the meeting.

He had selected the person who would explain it.

He had made sure I arrived.

But he could not decide what I would believe after hearing the information.

That part belonged to me.

I had been so angry about being brought here that I had nearly overlooked the one thing my husband could not take away.

My judgment.

I could hear what Daniel said and still disagree with my husband's choices.

I could understand a reason without deciding that it justified everything.

I could even accept that my husband had intended to help me while recognizing that he had handled the situation badly.

I didn't have to settle all of that immediately.

For the first time, I felt I had permission to leave some questions unanswered until I knew more.

I asked Daniel what he believed I should do if I still had questions after he finished explaining the arrangements.

He told me I should ask them.

The answer was simple.

It was also the first thing anyone had said that day that made me feel less alone.

I had spent so long preparing to defend myself that I had forgotten I could simply ask for information.

I didn't have to argue before I understood.

I didn't have to decide before I listened.

I could take the meeting one question at a time.

I rested my hands on the table.

"All right," I said. "Let's continue."

Daniel did.

I listened to the explanation, paying attention to the facts rather than the possibilities I had invented.

I still wanted to know why my husband had chosen this country.

I still wanted to know why he had not told me more before his death.

Those questions remained with me.

But I was beginning to understand that the purpose of this meeting was not to erase my confusion in a single moment.

It was to give me information I had not possessed before.

What I did with that information would be my responsibility.

I looked toward the bag beside me.

The photograph was inside.

I didn't take it out again.

For now, I let it remain where it was.

I had come here to find answers.

I needed to stop demanding that every object, every pause, and every memory provide one.

Daniel continued speaking.

And I finally allowed myself to listen.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: The More Carefully I Listened to Daniel, the More I Realized That Understanding My Husband Would Require More Than Finding Someone to Blame

I thought I was ready to hear the rest.
