We could argue about a choice, sleep on it, and return to the subject when we were calmer.

That was part of being married.

At least, that was how I had understood it.

Now I was faced with decisions that had already been made.

My husband had arranged the trip.

He had chosen the person who would meet me.

He had decided that certain information should be explained in person.

I had been given no opportunity to discuss those choices with him.

I could only decide what to do after the fact.

I asked Daniel whether my husband had left any room for me to make my own decisions.

He told me that I was free to consider the information and ask whatever questions I needed.

I appreciated the answer.

It did not undo what had happened, but it reminded me that I was not required to surrender my judgment simply because my husband had arranged the meeting.

I had come here to listen.

I could still decide what I believed.

I looked down at the photograph again.

The paper had begun to curl slightly where I had held it.

I smoothed the edge with my thumb.

It was such a small thing, but it made me think about how often I had tried to fix a problem by concentrating on something I could control.

I couldn't change my husband's decisions.

I couldn't ask him why he had made them.

I couldn't go back to the days before his death and insist that we have a different conversation.

But I could decide how I responded now.

That was not enough to make the situation easy.

It was enough to give me something to do.

I asked Daniel whether he thought my husband had expected me to be angry.

Daniel said he could not speak with certainty about my husband's expectations.

I nodded.

I had heard that kind of answer enough times to understand its value.

He was not trying to pretend he knew everything.

I could not expect him to give me a complete account of another person's mind.

I had to stop asking him to do the impossible.

Still, I wanted to understand the decision that had brought me here.

I asked whether my husband had given him any explanation for choosing a personal meeting rather than leaving written instructions alone.

Daniel explained that the meeting had been arranged because he believed the information needed to be discussed directly.

I studied him.

It was not the same as knowing my husband's private reasoning, but it was something I could understand.

There were conversations that could not be reduced to a letter.

There were questions that needed a person to answer them.

I had wanted my husband to leave me a clear explanation.

Perhaps he had believed that another person could provide the context he could no longer give.

I still didn't agree with the way he had handled it.

But I could see why a meeting might have seemed useful.

That small understanding did not make my anger disappear.

It made it less simple.

I had been treating my husband's decision as proof that he had not trusted me.

Now I wondered whether that was too easy an explanation.

Perhaps he had trusted me to listen.

Perhaps he had believed I could handle the information once I had it.

Perhaps he had made a mistake in how he prepared me for it.

I couldn't know which possibility was closest to the truth.

I would have to live with that uncertainty.

I asked Daniel whether there was anything I needed to do immediately.

He explained what the next steps of the meeting involved, without suggesting that I had to make a major decision before I understood the information.

That helped.

I had been afraid that I would be expected to sign something, agree to something, or make a choice that could not be undone.

I wanted time to think.

I wanted time to ask questions.

I wanted to be sure I understood what I was being asked to accept.

I told Daniel that I would not agree to anything I didn't understand.

He said he understood.

There was no argument.

I felt a small sense of relief.

For the first time since landing, I felt less like someone being carried along by another person's plan.

I was still following my husband's arrangements.

But I was doing so because I had chosen to hear the explanation, not because I believed I had no right to refuse.

That distinction mattered.

I thought about our children again.

I wanted to make sure that whatever I learned would not lead me to treat them differently.

They were not responsible for their father's choices.

They had not arranged the ticket.

They had not asked me to come to Costa Rica.

They had inherited what he had left them, and they had their own grief to manage.

I didn't want my confusion to become their burden.

If I needed to question their father's decisions, I would do that without making them feel they had to defend him.

I hoped I could manage it.

I had spent too much time imagining what his choices meant for our family before I knew the full explanation.

I needed to be careful.

Daniel watched me for a moment, then asked whether I wanted to continue.

I looked at the papers in front of him.

I thought about the airport.

I thought about the one-way ticket.

I thought about how close I had come to leaving without hearing anything.

Then I nodded.

"Yes. I want to understand."

He continued explaining the arrangements.

I listened without interrupting, even when I felt the urge to ask a question before he had finished.

I tried to hear the whole explanation before deciding what I thought about it.

That was harder than I expected.

Every time I heard something new, I wanted to fit it into the picture I had already built.

I wanted the information to confirm that my husband had loved me.

I wanted it to prove that I had been right to trust him.

But I also wanted to be honest.

If the information challenged my understanding of him, I needed to let it.

I could not ask for the truth and then reject it because it hurt.

That was something I had to remind myself more than once.

The photograph remained beside my bag.

I looked at it occasionally, not because I expected it to explain anything, but because it reminded me of the person I had been before the trip.

That woman had believed she knew what her husband wanted.

She had believed that their life together could be understood through the conversations they had shared.

I felt sorry for her.

I also knew she had not been foolish to trust someone she loved.

Trust was not a mistake simply because it could not answer every question.

I needed to remember that, too.

Daniel reached a point where he paused and asked whether I had questions about what he had explained.

I did.

There were more than I could count.

But I chose the one that mattered most to me.

"Why did he think I needed to come here myself?"

Daniel listened carefully.

He did not rush to fill the silence.

And I waited, determined to hear the answer without deciding in advance what it had to mean.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Had Come Looking for My Husband’s Explanation, but the Questions I Finally Asked Were About the Life We Had Shared and the One I Had Left Behind

I had expected the meeting to end with an answer.
