I could return to the terminal, buy another ticket, and go home to the life I understood.

I still wanted to go home.

But I no longer believed that leaving would make the questions disappear.

My husband had arranged something before he died.

I had agreed to hear about it.

Whatever happened next, I would have to face the fact that I had been brought into a situation I didn't understand.

I couldn't undo that by pretending it had never happened.

Daniel remained beside me, quiet and composed.

I had begun to recognize that his calmness wasn't necessarily a sign that he didn't care.

Perhaps it was simply how he handled difficult conversations.

I didn't know enough about him to judge.

That was something I needed to remember.

I had spent the day making assumptions because I was desperate for information.

Every time Daniel paused, I imagined a reason.

Every time he gave a careful answer, I wondered what he was hiding.

Sometimes those reactions were reasonable.

Sometimes they were just fear looking for somewhere to go.

I didn't want to confuse the two.

I asked Daniel how much longer it would be before we could speak privately.

He told me we were getting closer to the point where he could explain the arrangements.

I studied him.

"You're sure you can tell me why I'm here?"

He answered that he would explain what he had been instructed to explain.

It wasn't exactly the reassurance I wanted.

But it was more honest than pretending he could answer every question I might have.

I nodded.

I looked down at my bag and checked that the photograph was still inside.

It was.

I had begun to associate it with the journey, and the journey with the things my husband had left unfinished.

I didn't know whether the photograph was important to the explanation.

I only knew I wasn't ready to leave it behind.

I thought about the last days before my husband's death.

There were details I could remember clearly and others that seemed to blur together.

I remembered ordinary conversations.

I remembered the practical matters that needed attention.

I remembered trying to believe that, even after his death, the things we had built together would remain understandable.

I had assumed that the paperwork would explain the money, that the memories would explain the marriage, and that time would help me make sense of losing him.

I hadn't expected a one-way ticket to become part of my grief.

I hadn't expected to travel somewhere unfamiliar in search of an answer that my husband could have given me himself.

The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to ask him why.

Why had he waited?

Why had he chosen someone I didn't know?

Why had he arranged for me to come here instead of explaining things at home?

I wanted to ask those questions so badly that I almost said them aloud.

But there was nobody left to hear them.

That was the part I still couldn't accept.

I could be angry with my husband.

I could question him.

I could imagine all the things I would say if he were sitting across from me.

But I could never hear his answer.

I would have to build my understanding from whatever remained.

I turned toward Daniel.

"If he wanted me to know something, why didn't he tell me himself?"

Daniel looked at me for a long moment.

He didn't pretend the question was easy.

He acknowledged that I had a right to ask it.

That simple statement caught me off guard.

I had expected another explanation about timing or privacy.

Instead, he recognized the question without trying to soften it.

For the first time, I felt that he was speaking to me as a person rather than as someone who needed to be guided through a set of instructions.

He said that he could not speak for my husband's reasons before explaining what he had been asked to share.

I accepted that answer.

Not because I liked it.

Because I could see that he was trying not to claim knowledge he didn't have.

I looked out the window again.

I thought about the children.

I hoped they were being looked after.

I hoped they understood that I hadn't left because I wanted to get away from them.

I had come because their father had arranged it, and because I believed there was a reason I needed to hear.

I had no idea what that reason would mean for our family.

I only knew I could not continue living with the questions.

My husband's death had already changed our lives.

I couldn't let the uncertainty about his final decisions become another thing that divided us.

Whatever I learned, I wanted to be able to look our children in the eye and tell them I had tried to understand.

I wanted them to know that I had not simply accepted the money and ignored everything else.

Their father had left them a fortune.

He had left me a journey.

Both things were part of what he had decided, and I needed to understand why.

Daniel adjusted his folder and turned toward me.

He said he was ready to begin explaining the purpose of the meeting once we reached the place where we could speak without interruption.

I felt my stomach tighten.

I had been asking for that moment since I landed.

Now that it seemed close, I wanted it to take longer.

I hated that contradiction.

I wanted the truth.

I was afraid of the truth.

I wanted to hear my husband's reasons, even if those reasons proved that I had misunderstood him for years.

But I also wanted to preserve the memory of the man I had loved.

I wanted to believe that the life we had shared meant what I thought it meant.

I knew I couldn't demand both things.

The truth might comfort me.

It might hurt me.

It might leave me with more questions than I had when I arrived.

I had to be willing to find out.

I took a slow breath.

Daniel waited.

I told him I was ready to listen.

The words sounded steadier than I felt.

I wasn't ready for every possible answer.

I wasn't ready to forgive my husband for decisions I still didn't understand.

I wasn't ready to accept that the person I had loved might have known something about our future that he had chosen not to share.

But I was ready to hear what Daniel had been sent to tell me.

I had spent too long trying to guess the reason for my journey.

It was time to stop guessing.

I rested my hand on my bag one last time, feeling the photograph beneath the fabric.

Then I looked directly at Daniel.

"Tell me what my husband wanted me to know."

He met my eyes.

And for the first time since I had arrived in Costa Rica, I stopped looking for a way to leave.

I was finally ready to hear the answer.
