He seemed to know exactly where he was going, which only reminded me that I was the only person in this arrangement who had arrived without a plan.

I hated that.

I had always been the person who checked the details before leaving home. I made sure we had the right documents, the right address, and enough time to deal with unexpected problems.

My husband used to tease me about it.

He said I could turn a simple weekend trip into a military operation.

I would roll my eyes and tell him someone had to make sure we didn't forget anything.

He would smile.

I remembered that smile now, and it hurt more than I expected.

I had come to Costa Rica because he had arranged it.

I had no idea whether he had remembered the woman I was when he made those arrangements.

Daniel stopped near the exit and waited while I adjusted the handle of my suitcase.

He asked whether I needed a moment.

I told him I was fine.

It was the first lie I told him that day.

I wasn't fine, and I was tired of pretending otherwise.

But I didn't know him well enough to tell him the truth about that, either.

Outside the terminal, the air felt different from the air inside.

People moved between vehicles, and drivers waited near the curb. The noise was unfamiliar, but ordinary enough to remind me that this was a real place where people lived their lives.

I had expected to feel something when I stepped outside.

Relief, perhaps.

Fear.

A sense that I had crossed some invisible line.

Instead, I felt tired.

Daniel asked me to wait while he arranged our transportation.

I stood beside my suitcase and watched him speak briefly with someone nearby.

I couldn't hear the conversation clearly.

I didn't try to listen.

For the first time since landing, I allowed myself to look at my surroundings without searching for an explanation in every detail.

Then my mind returned to the same question.

Why here?

My husband could have arranged a meeting in our hometown. He could have left instructions with someone we both knew. He could have sent me a letter that explained why I needed to travel.

He had chosen none of those options.

He had chosen Costa Rica.

I thought about the money he had left our children.

Millions.

I had heard the amount discussed in conversations that felt more like business meetings than family matters. There had been papers, formal language, and people who spoke as though the future could be organized into neat categories.

Our children had been provided for.

That was good.

I would never complain about their security.

But I couldn't understand why their inheritance had seemed so clear while my own place in the future remained uncertain.

I wasn't asking for millions.

I wasn't even asking for an explanation that would make me happy.

I wanted to know what my husband had been trying to accomplish.

Daniel returned and told me we could leave.

I followed him to the waiting vehicle.

He made sure my suitcase was taken care of before opening the door for me.

It was a small courtesy.

I noticed it because I had been looking for reasons to distrust him.

I didn't want to admit that someone could be careful with me and still be withholding information.

That was the problem with grief.

It made every ordinary action feel like evidence.

A kind word could seem suspicious.

A pause could feel like a confession.

And silence could become whatever I was afraid it meant.

I sat down and placed my bag on my lap.

Daniel took the seat beside me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

I looked at the photograph inside my bag, then at the unfamiliar view beyond the window.

I wanted to ask him again why my husband had sent me here.

Instead, I asked a smaller question.

"Did my husband come here often?"

Daniel turned toward me.

He answered carefully, making it clear that he knew my husband through the matters he had been asked to handle.

He didn't give me a history of my husband's travels.

I accepted that he might not know one.

Still, the question stayed with me.

Had my husband known this place before he sent me?

Had he walked these streets while I was at home, believing I knew where he was?

I had no reason to assume he had hidden trips from me.

But I had no reason to assume the opposite, either.

I looked out the window.

The city passed in pieces, each one unfamiliar. I couldn't tell which streets mattered or where we were going.

Daniel remained quiet.

I wondered whether he had expected me to ask so many questions.

Perhaps my husband had described me as practical and reasonable, a woman who would accept an explanation once it was offered.

If so, he had forgotten something important.

I was practical.

I was also his wife.

And I was not going to accept a vague answer simply because he was no longer alive to defend it.

After a while, Daniel asked whether I was comfortable.

I said I was.

Then I turned toward him.

"I need you to understand something."

He waited.

"I came here because my husband arranged it. I didn't come because I understand why I'm here."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

"I don't know what he told you about me. I don't know what you think I already know. But I don't want you deciding what I can handle."

He listened without interrupting.

I continued before I could lose my nerve.

"If there's something difficult to tell me, tell me. If there's something you don't know, say that. But please don't make me guess."

For the first time, Daniel's expression changed in a way I could read.

He looked less like an attorney preparing to deliver information and more like a man who understood that the person in front of him had been asked to carry too much uncertainty.

He told me he would do his best to be clear.

I wanted to believe him.

I also knew that promises were easy to make.

My husband had made promises, too.

Some had been kept.

Others, I was beginning to suspect, had never been mine to understand.

The vehicle continued through the city.

I rested my hand on the bag in my lap.

Inside it was the photograph I had carried from home, its bent edge pressing against my fingers through the fabric.

I wondered why I had kept checking it.

Perhaps I was afraid that if I put it away, I would lose the only tangible connection between the strange journey and the life I had left behind.

Or perhaps I knew, without being ready to admit it, that the photograph mattered.

I couldn't explain why.

I only knew that I had carried it with me because something about it felt unfinished.

I closed my eyes for a moment.

My husband was dead.

There would be no telephone call in which he explained that the whole thing had been a misunderstanding. There would be no familiar voice telling me to stop worrying and promising to explain everything when he got home.

I had to face what was in front of me.

I opened my eyes again.

Daniel was looking out the window, his expression unreadable.

I turned back toward the passing streets.

Whatever waited for me, I would hear it.

I had spent enough time being afraid of a truth I didn't know.

Now I needed to discover whether the truth was something my husband had left to protect me, or something he had left because he knew I would never forgive him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Every Mile Took Me Farther From the Life I Knew, While the Questions My Husband Had Left Behind Became Harder to Ignore

I had made my decision, but that didn't mean I felt any better about it.
