He liked to know what would happen next, and he preferred to make decisions before a problem had a chance to grow.

When we were younger, I had admired that about him.

If something broke, he tried to fix it.

If a bill arrived unexpectedly, he worked out how we would pay it.

If one of the children needed something, he found a way to provide it.

I had never mistaken him for a perfect man.

We argued.

We disappointed each other.

There were times when I wished he would tell me what he was thinking instead of deciding what was best for everyone.

Still, I had believed that our disagreements took place inside a shared life.

I had believed we were building the same future.

Now I was beginning to question that belief.

I asked Daniel whether my husband had spoken about me before he died.

He said he had.

I waited for him to continue.

He didn't.

"What did he say?"

Daniel glanced at me.

"He wanted to make sure you were met when you arrived."

I stared at him.

"That's all?"

He explained that it was one of the things my husband had emphasized.

I let out a breath that sounded more like a laugh than I intended.

I had crossed an ocean to learn that my husband wanted someone to meet me at the airport.

It was almost insulting.

Then I felt ashamed for thinking that way.

Daniel had not arranged my husband's death. He had not sent the ticket. He was simply the man standing in front of me, carrying out instructions that had been made before I understood they existed.

I knew that.

Knowing it didn't make me less angry.

I asked whether my husband had expected me to come alone.

Daniel said the arrangements had been made for me.

That answer brought me back to the inheritance.

Our children had been left millions. The amount had seemed unreal when I first learned about it, too large to connect to the ordinary life we had lived.

I had wondered where everything came from, whether my husband had invested wisely, and whether there were assets I had never known about.

I had also wondered why the money had been discussed so clearly while my own future remained a mystery.

Perhaps there was a legal reason.

Perhaps the estate had been divided in a way that made sense to someone who understood the paperwork.

I tried to tell myself that.

But the ticket was still there.

The photograph was still there.

And Daniel was still refusing to explain why Costa Rica mattered.

I wanted to ask whether the trip was connected to the money, but I hesitated.

I didn't want him to think I had come because I expected something for myself.

That was another thing I hated about the situation.

My husband had left our children a fortune, and I was afraid that even asking a question would make me look greedy.

I had spent years taking care of our family. I had made sacrifices I never counted because I thought that was what a marriage required.

I had not expected a reward for those years.

I had expected honesty.

That was all.

I told Daniel I didn't understand why my husband couldn't have explained his intentions while he was alive.

Daniel listened.

He didn't defend my husband.

He didn't criticize him either.

He simply acknowledged that there were things he could not explain until he had the opportunity to speak with me privately.

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I asked whether my husband had known he was going to die.

The question seemed to change the atmosphere between us.

Daniel didn't immediately answer.

I watched his face, looking for some sign that he knew more than he was willing to tell me.

I couldn't find one I trusted.

He said he couldn't answer that question based on what he had been asked to discuss at the airport.

I turned away.

There it was again.

Instructions.

Boundaries.

A dead man controlling a conversation he would never have to participate in.

I wanted to tell Daniel that my husband no longer had the right to decide which questions I was allowed to ask.

But I knew that wasn't entirely fair.

My husband was gone.

Whatever he had intended, he could no longer explain it himself.

I was angry with him because anger gave me something to do with the grief.

If I admitted how much I missed him, I was afraid I would stop being able to function.

So I concentrated on the details.

Daniel's leather folder.

The handle of my suitcase.

The photograph tucked safely inside my bag.

The unfamiliar sounds of the airport.

Small things were easier to manage than the absence of the man I had expected to grow old beside.

I asked Daniel how much longer it would be before he could tell me what I needed to know.

He said he wanted to make sure I had time to settle down before discussing the matter.

I almost told him that I had been unsettled since the day my husband died.

Instead, I nodded.

I had begun to understand that I would get nowhere by repeating the same questions.

That didn't mean I would stop asking them.

It meant I would wait until there was no reasonable excuse left for avoiding an answer.

I adjusted the strap of my bag.

Daniel looked at the photograph for a moment when I took it out again, perhaps noticing how tightly I held it.

He didn't ask about it.

I wondered whether he recognized it.

I wondered whether it meant something to him.

The thought passed quickly, but it stayed with me.

I had been so focused on what my husband had said that I had not considered what he might have shown Daniel.

A photograph could be an ordinary object.

It could also be evidence of a memory, a promise, or a connection that someone else understood.

I looked down at it, then slipped it back into my bag.

I would not let my imagination turn every small detail into a mystery.

I had already spent enough time doing that.

Still, I couldn't forget the way Daniel had looked at me when I asked why I had been sent to Costa Rica.

He had not appeared confused.

He had appeared careful.

And careful people usually had a reason.

I asked him one more question.

Had my husband given him any indication of what I would be expected to do once I arrived?

Daniel told me that the instructions were specific, and that he would explain them when we were in a place where we could speak without interruption.

I studied him.

Then I nodded once.

I was tired of being asked to trust people who had information I didn't have.

But I had no choice except to begin somewhere.

If Daniel was telling the truth, he was the only person who could help me understand why my husband had arranged this trip.

If he wasn't, I needed to discover that before I went any farther.

I decided I would listen to him.

I would not promise to agree.

I would not pretend to understand.

And I would not let the fact that my husband had trusted him become a substitute for my own judgment.

That was the first decision I made in Costa Rica that belonged entirely to me.

It was a small thing.

But after everything that had happened, it felt important.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The More I Tried to Make Sense
