4 – The More Carefully We Examined the Application, the Less I Could Accept That My Missing Money Was Simply an Honest Mistake

After the meeting, I couldn't stop thinking about the date on the application.

March 11.

The first transfer had followed on March 14.

Three days separated the two events.

I kept returning to those dates because they were the only clear sequence I had.

The rest was still uncertain.

I didn't know who had opened the account.

I didn't know who had signed the authorization.

And I didn't know why the bank's records made it appear that I had done both.

I wanted those questions answered before I let myself settle on any explanation.

That wasn't easy.

When money disappears, the mind reaches for a person to blame.

When the money was supposed to come from someone you loved, the need to understand becomes even stronger.

My husband had made arrangements for our future.

He had intended to leave something behind that would help me raise our daughter.

I could not accept that the arrangement had simply vanished without anybody being able to explain where it went.

But I also knew that suspicion was not proof.

I reminded myself of that whenever I caught my thoughts drifting toward my family.

My mother had been present during my recovery.

She knew how difficult those months had been.

She knew I had been depending on help for things I once handled without thinking.

That history made her explanation possible in one sense.

It did not make it true.

I had to keep those two things separate.

Grandma understood why I couldn't let the matter rest.

She had asked the original question because she believed the money should have reached me.

Now she had seen the document that connected my name to an account I didn't recognize.

She wasn't prepared to dismiss it as a misunderstanding.

Neither was I.

The bank's paperwork gave us a place to begin.

It identified Westbridge Community Bank.

It showed the date the account had been opened.

It contained my personal details and a signature I disputed.

Those were not answers to every question, but they were specific facts we could return to.

I found myself studying the application in my mind even when I wasn't looking at it.

The photograph.

The address.

The date of birth.

Everything that made the page look convincing.

Then the signature.

That was the detail that would not fit.

I wondered how somebody could use so much correct information and still make such an important document false.

I wondered whether the person responsible had expected me never to see the paperwork.

I wondered whether the money had been moved on the assumption that I would be too overwhelmed to ask questions.

I couldn't prove any of those possibilities.

They were thoughts, not facts.

Still, I couldn't make them disappear.

My daughter needed my attention, and I tried not to let the investigation take over every hour of the day.

I fed her.

I held her.

I took care of the ordinary things that could not be postponed.

Sometimes I felt guilty for thinking about money when I should have been enjoying the time I had with her.

Then I remembered what the money represented.

It was part of the security her father had wanted to provide.

It was intended to help us move forward after losing him.

Finding out what happened to it wasn't selfish.

It was part of protecting the future he had tried to prepare for us.

That thought helped me keep going.

I also began to understand why Grandma had been so troubled when I told her I had received nothing.

She had expected the arrangement to work as intended.

She had not expected to discover an account that appeared to have been opened in my name without my knowledge.

Her concern was not only about the amount.

It was about the way the records had been created.

A document was supposed to establish what somebody had agreed to do.

This document claimed I had agreed to something I did not remember authorizing and did not recognize as my own action.

That difference was impossible for me to ignore.

I thought again about my mother's response during the meeting.

She had not examined the signature with the same disbelief I felt.

Instead, she had immediately offered a reason I might have signed it without remembering.

Perhaps she had been trying to calm me.

Perhaps she had genuinely believed the medication could explain the situation.

I couldn't know what had been in her mind.

But I could see what her explanation had done.

It had shifted the question away from who opened the account and toward whether I could trust my own memory.

I had spent enough time recovering from my injuries to know how easily other people could mistake physical weakness for an inability to understand.

I had been tired.

I had needed help.

I had sometimes struggled to perform ordinary tasks.

None of that meant I had lost the right to say what I had and had not authorized.

I refused to let the discussion end with the suggestion that my condition explained everything.

The documents still needed to be examined.

The account still needed to be accounted for.

The transfer still needed an explanation.

And the signature still needed to be compared with what I knew about my own handwriting.

I didn't expect every question to be resolved immediately.

I only wanted the investigation to continue without assumptions being treated as answers.

Grandma remained firm about that.

She had asked about the money because she believed I should have received it.

Now she wanted to understand how the account had come to exist.

She did not tell me who she suspected.

She did not ask me to accuse anyone.

She focused on the records.

That helped me do the same.

I began to see how important it was to be precise.

If I said that somebody had stolen the money, I would be claiming more than I could yet prove.

If I said the account had been opened fraudulently, I would be drawing a conclusion before every relevant fact was known.

But if I said I had never knowingly opened the account, that was true.

If I said I did not recognize the signature, that was true.

If I said the money had not reached me, that was true.

Those facts were enough to justify asking more questions.

They were enough to stop pretending the matter was settled.

I thought about the version of myself who had sat at the Thanksgiving table hoping that the problem would turn out to be a simple delay.

She had wanted to avoid a painful confrontation.

She had wanted her family to remain the people she believed them to be.

I understood that woman.

I had been trying to protect more than my peace of mind.

I had been trying to protect my sense of belonging.

But family ties could not make a false signature genuine.

They could not make an unfamiliar account mine.

And they could not explain why money intended for my future had failed to reach me.

I needed to face that, even if the truth turned out to hurt.

The next time I thought about the application, I no longer saw it as an ordinary piece of bank paperwork.

I saw a question that somebody needed to answer.

Who had used my information?

Who had completed the authorization?

Who had arranged for the account to receive the money?

And why had I been left believing that the arrangements my husband made were being handled as intended?

I still had no names to attach to those questions.

I still had no complete explanation.

But I had stopped treating the absence of answers as a reason to doubt myself.

The money was supposed to be part of the protection my husband had left behind.

Instead, I was facing documents that appeared to place his final arrangements in somebody else's hands.

I could not change what had already happened.

I could not recover the months I had spent believing everything was in order.

But I could insist that the account be examined and the transfer explained.

That was what I decided to do.

Not because I was certain who had caused the problem.

Because I was certain I had not knowingly authorized it.

And until somebody could explain the signature on that page, I would not accept that my husband's money had simply gone missing by accident.

Click here to continue reading: PART
