15 – I Wanted My Mother to Explain Herself, but I Was Beginning to Understand That Her Answer Could Never Be More Important Than My Safety

There were moments when I almost convinced myself that I should contact my mother.

I would imagine hearing her voice.

I would imagine asking what had happened.

I would imagine giving her one last opportunity to tell me something that made sense.

The idea was comforting for a few seconds.

Then I remembered waking outside.

I remembered the cold pavement against my cheek.

I remembered searching for my phone and finding nothing.

And I remembered that my family had already gone to the police with their accusations.

The comfort disappeared.

I had to stop confusing the desire for an explanation with a reason to return.

I wanted to understand my mother.

I wanted to know whether she regretted what she had done.

I wanted to know whether she had felt any concern when she realized I was no longer able to respond.

Those questions mattered to me because she was my mother.

I could not simply erase that relationship from my mind.

But I was beginning to understand that her answers might not be honest.

She might deny what happened.

She might say I had provoked her.

She might insist that I was remembering things incorrectly.

She might tell me that everything she had done was somehow my fault.

I couldn't know which explanation she would give.

I only knew that I had no reason to assume the conversation would be safe.

I had to make decisions based on what had already happened, not on what I hoped she might say next.

That was difficult because hope had always given me a reason to try again.

I had believed that every difficult relationship contained the possibility of a better conversation.

I had believed that if I remained patient, another person might eventually hear what I was trying to say.

I still believed that people could change.

But I was learning that their ability to change did not create an obligation for me to remain within reach while I waited.

My mother could choose to reflect on what had happened.

She could choose to take responsibility.

She could choose to tell the truth about the night.

Those choices belonged to her.

I could not make them for her by returning to the house.

I could not force her to care by explaining how frightened I had been.

And I could not make myself safe by waiting for her to become the person I needed.

I had to take care of myself first.

That meant accepting that I might not get the conversation I wanted.

I might never hear an apology.

I might never understand why my sister laughed.

I might never know exactly what my family had discussed before going to the police.

Those unanswered questions hurt.

But they did not prevent me from taking the next step.

I could seek help without knowing their motives.

I could preserve the evidence without knowing how they would react.

And I could tell the truth without receiving their permission.

I had to keep repeating those things because the old habits returned whenever I felt overwhelmed.

I would begin wondering whether I was being unfair.

I would think about the moments when my mother had been kind.

I would remember ordinary conversations and wonder whether I was making too much of one terrible night.

Then I would remember the sequence of events again.

I had been hurt.

I had lost consciousness.

I had been abandoned outside.

And my family had gone to the police together.

The existence of earlier good moments did not erase those facts.

I could remember kindness without using it to excuse harm.

I could feel affection without ignoring danger.

And I could wish for a different relationship without pretending the relationship I had was safe.

That was the balance I needed to learn.

I didn't want to become someone who judged every person by their worst moment.

But I also didn't want to become someone who excused every harmful action because of the moments that came before it.

There had to be room for both memory and judgment.

I could remember the history of my family.

I could recognize the ways I had once depended on them.

And I could still decide that I needed distance now.

That decision did not require hatred.

It required honesty.

I thought about my sister, too.

I wondered whether she had ever considered how I would remember that night.

Perhaps she believed I would eventually return and try to make peace.

Perhaps she thought I would remain quiet because I had done so before.

I couldn't know.

I had to stop imagining her thoughts as though understanding them would tell me what to do.

What mattered was what she had actually done.

She had held her phone while I asked for help.

She had laughed.

I had no reason to trust her with my next decision.

That was enough.

I could leave the question of her motives unanswered.

I could leave the question of her remorse unanswered.

And I could decide not to contact her while I was trying to protect myself.

I also had to think carefully about the evidence.

I had hidden it before returning to the house because I did not want my family to control it.

That decision remained important.

I couldn't let the desire to prove my honesty make me careless.

I couldn't reveal its location simply because I wanted someone to understand that I had been preparing to protect myself.

And I couldn't assume that presenting it would immediately settle every dispute.

I needed to preserve it and seek a safe way to have it examined.

I wanted to move forward quickly.

I wanted the accusations against me answered.

I wanted my family to stop speaking as though they were the only people who knew what had happened.

But I had to be patient enough to protect the things that mattered.

I could not make every decision in one night.

I could not force every question to have an answer.

And I could not make my family behave differently by wishing hard enough.

I could, however, refuse to return to a dangerous situation.

I could refuse to surrender the evidence.

And I could seek help from people who were not invested in preserving my family's version of events.

Those choices were available to me.

I needed to use them.

I still wished my mother had been someone I could call when I was frightened.

That wish had not disappeared.

But I was beginning to understand that missing the person I needed was not the same as having that person available to me.

I had to stop reaching toward an imagined version of my mother and make decisions based on the mother whose actions I had experienced.

It was one of the hardest things I had ever admitted to myself.

It was also necessary.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Could
