1 – I Woke Up Freezing in an Alley, With No Shoes and No Memory of How My Own Family Had Left Me There

I used to believe that if your own family hurt you, someone would eventually step in and make it right.

I was wrong.

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I noticed was the cold.

It had worked through my clothes and settled deep in my body, making even the smallest movement hurt.

I tried to sit up.

My head spun, and I had to put one hand against the pavement to keep from falling over.

For a moment, I couldn't understand why I was outside.

Then I looked down.

My feet were bare.

I had no coat, and what remained of my clothing did little to protect me from the freezing air.

I stared at my hands.

They were shaking so badly that I could barely hold them still.

I tried to remember how I had gotten there, but my thoughts came back in broken pieces.

A room.

A raised voice.

My mother's face.

Then pain.

I closed my eyes, hoping the memories would settle into something that made sense.

Instead, I heard my sister laughing.

That was when I remembered.

Not everything.

Just enough.

I remembered lying on the floor, struggling to breathe normally while my mother stood over me.

I remembered trying to speak to her.

I remembered asking for help.

And I remembered my little sister holding up her phone.

She had been watching me through its screen, smiling as though what was happening were something amusing.

I had begged her to call someone.

Anyone.

She had not put the phone down.

That memory hurt in a way the cold couldn't explain.

My sister had seen me helpless.

She had heard me ask her to help.

And she had chosen to laugh.

I opened my eyes again.

The alley was quiet.

There were walls on either side of me, and the ground beneath my cheek was hard enough to make my jaw ache.

I didn't know how long I had been lying there.

I didn't know who had passed by.

I only knew that I couldn't stay on the pavement and hope things would somehow improve.

I tried to stand.

My knees gave way almost immediately.

I caught myself against the wall, pressing my palm against the rough surface until the dizziness eased.

My first instinct was to call my mother.

That was the part I have the hardest time admitting.

Even after everything, some frightened part of me still believed she might come if I asked the right way.

I reached for my phone.

It wasn't in my pocket.

I checked the other one, then searched the front of my clothing with trembling hands.

Nothing.

I felt a sudden rush of panic.

Without my phone, I couldn't call anyone.

I couldn't explain where I was.

I couldn't even check the time.

I pressed my back against the wall and tried to breathe slowly.

Think.

That was what I told myself.

Just think.

I needed somewhere warm.

I needed help.

And I needed to understand why my family had left me there.

The last clear thing I remembered before losing consciousness was my mother standing above me.

I could still hear my own voice calling for her.

I had called her because I was scared.

Because, despite the things she had done, she was still the person I had spent my life turning toward when I didn't know what else to do.

Looking back, that word alone made me ashamed.

Mom.

I had said it as if it could protect me.

I pushed myself away from the wall and took a few careful steps toward the end of the alley.

The cold air caught in my throat.

My feet hurt against the ground, and every movement seemed to take more effort than it should have.

I kept going.

I didn't know where I was.

I didn't know whether my family was nearby.

But I knew I had to get out of that alley before I collapsed again.

At the entrance, I stopped and looked toward the street.

There were buildings, dark windows, and the ordinary signs of a world that had continued without me.

Somewhere beyond those walls, people were sleeping in warm beds.

Somewhere, someone was probably complaining about a difficult day or an argument they would forget by morning.

I wondered how they would react if they saw me.

Would they ask what had happened?

Would they believe me?

Or would they look at my torn clothing and assume I was the problem?

I didn't have an answer.

I stepped out of the alley.

The movement made my head throb, and I grabbed the nearest wall until I could steady myself.

I needed help from someone who didn't know my family.

That thought frightened me almost as much as the alternative.

For years, I had learned to keep family problems inside the family.

I had been taught that private matters stayed private, even when someone was hurt.

I had accepted that rule because I thought following it might make things easier.

It hadn't.

I looked down at my bare feet and tried not to cry.

There was no dignity left to protect.

No family reputation worth saving.

No reason to pretend that everything was fine.

I had to survive first.

Everything else could wait.

I began moving toward the nearest place where I thought someone might see me.

My steps were slow, and I had to stop more than once to catch my breath.

The cold made my fingers stiff.

My thoughts kept returning to the same questions.

Why had my mother done this?

Why had my sister watched?

And why had no one come to help me?

I couldn't answer any of them.

Then another memory surfaced.

My family standing together.

Their faces serious.

Their voices calm.

They were speaking to the police.

I couldn't remember every word, but I remembered the accusation.

They were telling people I was mentally unstable.

They were presenting themselves as the ones who needed protection.

And they were making me sound like someone no one should trust.

I stopped walking.

The thought was so frightening that, for several seconds, I forgot about the cold.

They hadn't simply left me outside.

They had gone together to tell a story about me.

A story in which I was the danger.

A story in which whatever I said afterward could be dismissed before anyone bothered to listen.

I had spent years trying to make my family understand me.

Now I understood something about them.

They were prepared to make sure nobody else did.

My hands began shaking harder.

I couldn't tell whether it was the temperature or fear.

Maybe both.

I forced myself to keep moving.

I had no proof in my hands.

No phone.

No coat.

No way to explain what had happened without first getting someone to listen.

But my family had made one mistake.

They believed they had taken everything from me.

They hadn't.

There was something they didn't know.

Something I had kept hidden before I ever went back to that house.

I couldn't remember every detail of what had happened that night, but I remembered the decision I had made before it.

I remembered why I had kept certain things away from my family.

And I remembered that I had never told them where to look.

That thought was the first thing that made the fear loosen its grip.

Not relief.

Not yet.

Just a small reason to keep going.

I reached the end of the street and leaned against another wall.

My body felt weak, and my mind was struggling to hold on to a single clear thought.

I needed warmth.

I needed medical attention.

I needed someone to hear me before my family convinced everyone that I was lying.

Most of all, I needed to stay alive long enough to tell the truth.

I looked toward the street again.

Then I took another step.

I had no idea what would happen next.

But I wasn't ready to let my family's version of me become the only one anyone ever heard.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: My
