But we need to get stable first."

I nodded.

"That seems like a good way to look at it."

She smiled faintly.

"I wish we'd thought about things that way before."

I knew what she meant.

I did not need to remind her of the bedroom argument.

We both remembered it.

Instead, I told her I hoped the apartment worked out.

She thanked me and went upstairs to get ready.

I spent the afternoon doing my own errands.

When I returned, David was in the kitchen preparing a simple meal.

He had bought the groceries on his way home.

He asked whether I wanted some.

I said yes.

We ate together while Sarah looked over the apartment information.

The place seemed practical.

It was close enough to work and had the basic features they needed.

David pointed out that the rent would allow them to keep saving a little each month.

Sarah looked at the pictures again.

"I think we should see it before deciding."

David agreed.

I stayed quiet.

They were discussing their future without expecting me to choose it for them.

That was what I had wanted.

The next day, they visited the apartment.

When they returned, they seemed more hopeful than they had after the previous viewings.

David said the place was clean and the building appeared well maintained.

Sarah liked the kitchen more than she had expected.

The bedroom was not large, but there was enough room for their furniture.

They still had questions about the lease.

They planned to ask the property manager before making any commitment.

I listened as they discussed the details.

I did not tell them to hurry.

I did not tell them to wait.

I simply asked whether the numbers still worked.

David opened his notebook.

"We think they do."

"Then take your time and make sure you understand everything before you agree."

He nodded.

"We will."

That evening, I went into the garage to move a few items away from the wall.

The space had become crowded since David and Sarah arrived.

Their boxes were stacked near the shelves.

My husband's toolbox sat behind them.

I moved the boxes carefully so I could reach the watering can.

One of David's boxes had a loose flap.

I pressed it closed and noticed that it was labeled with his name.

For a moment, I thought about the day he had arrived with his bags.

I had been excited to help him.

I had expected a few weeks of shared meals and conversations.

I had not imagined that I would end up defending my bedroom.

I had also not imagined that the argument would force me to examine so many things about myself.

I had learned that I could be generous without saying yes to everything.

I could forgive someone without pretending they had done nothing wrong.

I could love my son without taking responsibility for every choice he made.

Those lessons had not come easily.

But they had changed the way I saw the arrangement.

I was no longer waiting for David and Sarah to become grateful enough to make me feel comfortable.

I was looking at what we were each doing to make the situation work.

That was a much fairer measure.

I returned the watering can to the shelf and moved the boxes back into place.

Then I went inside.

David was standing by the kitchen table, reading through the apartment information again.

He looked up.

"Mom, can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"If we decide to take this place, would you mind helping us move?"

I smiled.

"I'd be happy to help with what I can."

He looked relieved.

"Thanks."

I added, "But you'll need to organize the move yourselves."

He nodded immediately.

"Of course."

The answer came easily.

That pleased me more than I expected.

He was not asking me to do everything.

He was asking whether I would help.

There was a difference.

Later that evening, Sarah came downstairs carrying a stack of folded clothes.

She put them into a bag and looked toward the guest-room door.

"We should probably start sorting through what we actually need."

David nodded.

"That makes sense."

They began discussing which boxes they would take and what could be donated.

I continued reading in the living room.

Their voices drifted through the hallway.

They were planning for a life beyond my house.

I felt two things at once.

I would miss having David nearby.

I would also be glad to have my home to myself again.

Neither feeling made me a bad mother.

I had worried that wanting my independence back meant I was tired of helping him.

That was not true.

I wanted him to succeed.

I wanted him to have a home where he and Sarah could build their own routines.

I wanted them to learn how to manage their money and make decisions together.

And I wanted to return to a life where I could read in the living room without wondering whether I was in someone's way.

Those desires could exist together.

When I went upstairs, I paused outside the guest room.

The door was open.

Sarah was folding clothes on the bed.

David was writing something on a piece of paper.

They looked up when I passed.

"Everything all right?" I asked.

"Yes," David said. "We're just sorting things out."

I nodded.

"Let me know if you need boxes."

"We will."

I continued to my bedroom.

The photograph of my husband was waiting beside the lamp.

I picked it up and looked at it.

I thought about the advice he had given me years ago.

Helping someone should make them stronger, not make them believe you will always carry them.

I had resisted that advice for a long time.

Now I understood it better.

I had not needed to stop helping David.

I had needed to help him in a way that left room for him to become responsible for his own life.

I put the photograph back and sat on the bed.

For the first time, the idea of David moving out did not feel like a rejection or a victory.

It felt like the next step.

A step we had finally begun preparing for together.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Apartment Was Finally Within Reach, but I Knew Moving Forward Would
