he asked.

I studied the pictures.

"It looks worth viewing."

He nodded.

"That's what we thought."

I did not tell him that the rooms looked smaller than I expected.

I did not compare them with my house.

I did not ask whether the apartment had a large bedroom.

Those were questions for David and Sarah to consider.

They needed a place they could afford.

They did not need a place that matched every comfort they had imagined.

I handed the phone back.

"I hope it works out."

David smiled.

"Thanks."

That evening, Sarah came into the kitchen while I was putting away leftovers.

She asked whether I knew what to look for when renting an apartment.

I told her to pay attention to the condition of the windows, the water pressure, the appliances, and the terms of the lease.

I suggested that they read everything carefully before agreeing to anything.

She listened and wrote down a few notes.

I was glad she had asked.

It felt good to help without feeling pressured to surrender something of my own.

The following Saturday, they went to view the apartment.

I stayed home.

I cleaned the kitchen, watered the flowers, and spent some time reading in the living room.

When they returned, David looked thoughtful.

Sarah put her bag on the chair and sat down.

"The place was all right," David said.

I waited.

"But there were a few things we weren't sure about."

He explained that the apartment was smaller than the pictures had suggested.

The bedroom had limited closet space.

The kitchen was narrower than they expected.

I listened without offering an immediate opinion.

Finally, Sarah sighed.

"I don't know if we could live there."

I looked at her.

"Was there something wrong with it?"

"Not exactly."

She glanced toward David.

"We just wanted something a little nicer."

I understood that feeling.

Everyone wanted a comfortable home.

There was nothing wrong with wanting a good place to live.

But wanting something and being able to afford it were two different matters.

I did not say that aloud.

David was already looking at the notes on his phone.

"We'll keep looking," he said.

I nodded.

"That's sensible."

The next few days brought more listings.

Some were too expensive.

Others were too far from work.

One had a kitchen that Sarah disliked.

Another had a bedroom that David thought was too small.

They were not wrong to have preferences.

But I began to notice how quickly every imperfect option was dismissed.

I said nothing at first.

They had to make their own choices.

Still, I wondered whether they understood that the longer they stayed with me, the more tempting it would be to wait for a place that felt perfect.

My home was comfortable.

They were not paying rent.

They had access to the kitchen, the laundry, and the shared rooms.

There was no immediate pressure forcing them to compromise.

I knew that if I had been in their position, I might also have wanted to wait.

That was exactly why we needed to keep the original purpose of the arrangement in mind.

One evening, David sat beside me in the living room.

Sarah was upstairs.

He looked at the television without turning it on.

"We're having trouble finding something we both like."

I put my book down.

"I imagine that's difficult."

He nodded.

"Everything decent costs more than we expected."

I listened.

He explained that they wanted enough space to be comfortable but did not want to spend all their savings on rent.

I understood the dilemma.

I had lived through financial decisions that required compromise.

My husband and I had once delayed buying a new car because the old one still ran.

We had postponed a holiday to pay for repairs to the house.

We had chosen a smaller television when the one we wanted cost too much.

None of those decisions had ruined our lives.

They had simply required us to decide what mattered most.

"Sometimes you have to choose what you can manage rather than what you would prefer," I said.

David nodded slowly.

"I know."

I looked at him.

"Do you?"

He gave a tired smile.

"You're starting to sound like Dad."

I laughed before I could stop myself.

"Your father would have said the same thing."

For a moment, we both smiled.

Then David looked down at his hands.

"I miss him."

The words were so quiet that I almost did not hear them.

I felt the old ache rise in my chest.

"So do I."

We sat without speaking.

I wanted to tell David that his father would have been proud of him for trying to take responsibility.

I also wanted to tell him that his father would not have approved of the way he had treated me.

Both things might have been true.

But this was not the moment to use his father's memory to make a point.

We were simply two people who missed someone.

After a while, David stood and went upstairs.

I returned to my book, though I did not read much.

The next morning, Sarah asked whether I thought they should wait another month before making a decision.

I considered the question.

"That depends on your finances and what you can afford."

She looked disappointed.

"I was hoping you'd tell us what to do."

I shook my head gently.

"I can help you think it through. But I can't choose your home for you."

She was quiet.

I could tell she wanted a clearer answer.

Perhaps she wanted me to say they should stay longer.

Perhaps she wanted me to tell her which apartment to choose.

But I could not make that decision.

They were the ones who would pay the rent.

They were the ones who would live with the choice.

They had to decide what mattered most.

That evening, I watched them compare listings at the kitchen table.

David had a notebook open.

Sarah was reading prices from her phone.

They were working through the numbers carefully.

I did not interrupt.

I went to my bedroom and closed the door.

I sat beside the window and looked at the photograph of my husband.

I thought about how much easier it would have been to solve every problem for David.

I could have offered more money.

I could have rearranged the house again.

I could have told them to stay until they found exactly what they wanted.

But that would not necessarily have helped them become independent.

It might only have postponed the difficult decisions.

I wanted my son to succeed.

I wanted Sarah to feel secure.

And I wanted my own home to remain a place where I could live without constantly negotiating for space.

Those wishes were not in conflict.

The challenge was finding a way to honor all of them.

I turned off the lamp.

Tomorrow, they would look at more apartments.

I hoped they would find one that worked.

But I was no longer going to make their decision for them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Could Hear David and Sarah Planning Their Future Beyond My Walls, and I Realized That Helping Them Leave Well Mattered as Much as Welcoming Them In

The next few days were quieter than I expected.
