I just want us to talk about the living arrangement."

They exchanged a glance.

I noticed it.

A few weeks earlier, that glance would have made me nervous.

I would have wondered whether they thought I was being difficult again.

This time, I reminded myself that the conversation was necessary.

We sat at the kitchen table.

I took the chair nearest the window.

David sat opposite me, and Sarah settled beside him.

The notebook was in the drawer, but I did not bring it out.

I wanted this to be a conversation, not a presentation.

"I invited you both here because I wanted to help you save money," I began. "That offer still stands."

David nodded.

"We know."

"But I think we need to be clearer about what temporary means."

Sarah looked down at the table.

I continued.

"I don't expect you to find a place tomorrow. I know that takes time. But I don't want us to live without any idea of what we're working toward."

David rubbed his hands together.

"We've been looking at our expenses."

"That's good. Have you worked out how much you can save each month?"

He gave me a figure.

I asked whether that amount included groceries, transportation, and their other regular bills.

He said they were still calculating some of it.

I nodded.

"Then perhaps that's the first thing you should finish."

Sarah leaned forward.

"We don't want to stay here longer than we have to."

"I believe you."

She seemed relieved.

"But I also don't want any of us to assume this arrangement can continue indefinitely without talking about it."

David looked at me.

"That's fair."

I had expected more resistance.

Perhaps they were beginning to understand that setting expectations was not the same as withdrawing help.

I explained that they could continue using the guest room while they worked on their finances.

They could use the kitchen, the laundry facilities, and the shared living spaces.

They could keep their belongings in the areas we had agreed upon.

My bedroom, however, was not part of the arrangement.

Neither was the storage room, unless we discussed it first.

I wanted the house to remain comfortable for all of us.

That meant being considerate of each other's space.

Sarah nodded.

"I understand."

David did, too.

Then I asked whether they would be willing to review their plans with me in a few weeks.

Not every private detail.

Just enough for us to understand whether the arrangement was moving toward the goal we had agreed on.

David considered it.

"I think that would help."

Sarah nodded.

"All right."

I felt relieved.

I had been afraid that setting a time to review things would make them feel unwelcome.

Instead, the conversation seemed to make the situation clearer.

We were not pretending that their financial problems would disappear overnight.

We were agreeing to work toward a change.

David leaned back in his chair.

"I should have talked to you about all this when we first arrived."

I looked at him.

"Yes, you should have."

He nodded.

"I think we were so worried about money that we weren't thinking clearly."

Sarah glanced at him.

"We weren't thinking about how it would feel to you."

I appreciated that she had said it.

I also appreciated that neither of them expected me to dismiss the issue.

I took a breath.

"I don't want you to feel ashamed for needing help. Everyone needs help sometimes. But I need to be able to help without feeling as though I have to give up my own choices."

David looked at me for a long moment.

"I understand."

This time, I believed he was trying.

I knew that understanding would have to show itself in what he did next.

But I no longer needed to hear the perfect words.

I needed honesty and follow-through.

We discussed the household expenses.

David and Sarah would contribute toward the groceries and cleaning supplies they used.

They would continue saving money.

They would look for housing that fit their budget rather than assuming they could find something that met every preference immediately.

I did not tell them how to spend every dollar.

I did not need to.

They were adults.

The goal was to help them build a plan they could manage themselves.

When we finished, Sarah stood and carried her glass to the sink.

"Thank you for talking to us."

I nodded.

"Thank you for listening."

David remained seated for a moment.

Then he reached across the table and touched my hand.

"I'm sorry I put you in that position."

I felt the words more deeply than I expected.

I looked at my son.

"I appreciate you saying that."

He squeezed my hand once, then let go.

I did not tell him that everything was fine.

It had not been fine.

But I was willing to move forward.

After they went upstairs, I remained at the table.

The kitchen was quiet.

I looked at the place where David had been sitting.

When he was little, he used to sit there doing his homework while I prepared dinner.

He would ask me to check his answers.

Sometimes he had done the work carefully.

Other times, he wanted me to tell him the answer before he had tried.

I used to help him because I wanted him to succeed.

Eventually, I learned that I had to let him make mistakes.

That lesson had not ended when he became an adult.

Perhaps I had simply forgotten it.

I put the glasses in the dishwasher and wiped the table.

Then I went upstairs.

My bedroom was quiet and comfortable.

I changed into my nightclothes and sat beside the window.

For the first time since David and Sarah moved in, I felt that we had a shared understanding of the future.

It was not a detailed plan.

We had not found an apartment.

We had not settled every financial question.

But we had agreed on the purpose of their stay and the need to keep talking about it.

That was enough to move forward.

The next morning, I woke feeling calmer.

I made coffee and opened the curtains.

The house looked the same.

The flowers still needed water.

The kitchen drawer still had its loose handle.

The old wooden table still rocked slightly when I set my cup on it.

Ordinary things waited for me.

I was glad.

I did not need a dramatic change to know that something important had shifted.

I only needed to know that my voice had a place in my own home.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: We Had Finally Agreed on the Rules, but I Knew the Real Test Would Come When David and Sarah Had to Choose Between What They Wanted and What They Could Afford

I waited until after dinner to bring up the conversation.
