Make sure you know the number before you start looking."

He nodded.

I could have offered to call every person I knew.

I could have searched through old contacts and spent the afternoon trying to find them somewhere to live.

Instead, I offered to ask around.

That was a reasonable amount of help.

The rest was their responsibility.

I was learning to distinguish between supporting someone and taking over.

It was not always comfortable.

Sometimes I worried that I was becoming less generous.

Then I remembered the morning Sarah had ordered me to move out of my own bedroom.

I had not become less generous that day.

I had simply discovered that generosity without clear limits could leave me feeling invisible.

I did not want to return to that feeling.

Later that afternoon, I called a friend who knew several people in the neighborhood.

I asked whether she had heard of any affordable rentals.

She said she would keep her ears open.

I thanked her and ended the call.

That was all I could do for the moment.

When David returned from work, I told him what I had learned.

He wrote down my friend's number and said he would contact her if she heard of anything.

I was pleased that he took the information and made a plan of his own.

It was a small thing.

But small things were often where responsibility showed itself.

That evening, Sarah joined me in the kitchen while I prepared dinner.

She asked whether I needed help.

I handed her the cutting board and asked her to chop the vegetables.

She did so without complaint.

We worked beside each other for several minutes.

Then she spoke.

"David said you've been asking around about apartments."

"I asked a friend whether she knew of anything."

Sarah nodded.

"We appreciate that."

I looked at her.

"You're welcome."

She kept chopping.

"I know I made things difficult when we first arrived."

I did not answer immediately.

I wanted to hear what she meant.

She set the knife down.

"I was worried about our situation, and I think I started looking at everything in terms of what we needed."

I waited.

"That wasn't fair to you."

The words were quiet.

I felt some of the tension leave my shoulders.

"No," I said. "It wasn't."

She looked at me, perhaps surprised that I had not rushed to make her feel better.

I understood the temptation.

I wanted us to get along.

I wanted dinner to remain peaceful.

But I did not want to erase what had happened simply because Sarah had finally acknowledged it.

She had made a mistake.

I had made mistakes, too.

We could recognize both without pretending they were the same.

"I'm glad you understand," I added.

She nodded and returned to the vegetables.

We finished preparing dinner without another difficult conversation.

When David came downstairs, the food was ready.

He carried the plates to the table while Sarah brought the serving bowl.

I watched them move around the kitchen.

For the first time since their arrival, I felt that we were beginning to share the house rather than struggle over it.

After dinner, David asked whether I wanted to play a board game.

He found one in the cabinet beneath the television.

It was an old game we had played when he was younger.

The box was worn at the corners, and some of the pieces had lost their original color.

David laughed when he saw it.

"I remember this."

"You used to insist you were winning even when you weren't."

"I was probably winning."

"You were probably cheating."

He laughed again.

Sarah joined us.

We played for nearly an hour.

There were no speeches about family.

Nobody brought up the bedroom.

We simply spent time together.

When I went upstairs that night, I felt grateful for the evening.

But I also understood something important.

A pleasant evening could not replace a clear agreement.

We still needed to discuss how long David and Sarah intended to stay.

We still needed to make sure the temporary arrangement remained temporary.

And we still needed to learn how to speak honestly before resentment built up.

I did not want to wait until another disagreement forced us to have that conversation.

The next morning, I made a decision.

I would ask them to sit down with me that evening.

Not to threaten them.

Not to demand that they leave immediately.

I wanted us to talk about what came next while we were getting along.

That seemed like a better way to protect the progress we had made.

I wrote a short reminder in my notebook.

Talk about the arrangement.

Then I closed it and went about my day.

I had learned enough to know that avoiding a difficult conversation did not make it disappear.

It only gave it time to grow.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Asked My Son and Daughter-in-Law to Sit at the Table Where We Had Shared So Many Meals, and This Time I Wanted Us to Agree on What Came Next

I used to think the hardest part of being a mother was letting your children grow up.
