I'll talk to Sarah."

I watched him leave the kitchen.

Then I sat down and opened the mail.

My hands felt unsteady.

I had not refused to help him forever.

I had asked him to try solving his own problem first.

It should not have felt like such a serious decision.

But I had spent years equating motherhood with being available.

I was learning that availability without limits could become an unhealthy habit.

That afternoon, Sarah came into the kitchen while I was preparing vegetables.

David had apparently spoken to her about the bill.

She did not sound angry.

She sounded worried.

"We're trying to get things organized," she said.

"I know."

"It's just harder than we thought."

I put the knife down.

"I understand that."

She looked at the counter.

"We thought staying here would give us a chance to catch up."

"That was why I offered the room."

She nodded.

I could see that she was struggling to say something.

Finally, she asked whether I was upset with them.

I considered the question.

"I was upset about what happened with my bedroom. I'm still hurt by it. But I want you both to succeed."

Sarah looked at me.

"I didn't think you would take it so personally."

I felt the old frustration stir.

My bedroom was personal.

My home was personal.

My life was personal.

But I did not say those words.

Instead, I answered calmly.

"I think most people would have felt hurt if someone told them to move out of their own bedroom."

She looked down.

"Maybe."

I returned to cutting the vegetables.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Sarah picked up the grocery list from the counter.

"We need to buy a few things tomorrow."

"All right."

She paused.

"Do you want anything?"

I told her what we needed.

She wrote it down.

The conversation was not warm, exactly.

But it was civil.

Sometimes that was enough for a beginning.

That evening, David and Sarah sat together at the kitchen table with their papers spread between them.

I could hear them discussing expenses.

They were not shouting.

They were not asking me to join them.

I stayed in the living room and read.

I was glad they were working on the problem.

I was also glad I did not have to manage it for them.

When I went upstairs, I stopped outside the guest room.

The door was partly open.

David was pointing at something on the paper while Sarah listened.

I could not hear their words clearly.

I did not need to.

They were doing what I had hoped they would do when I offered them a place to stay.

They were making a plan.

I continued to my bedroom.

The photograph of my husband stood beside the lamp.

I picked it up and looked at it for a moment.

He had always been better than I was at allowing David to struggle a little.

He believed that a person needed room to make mistakes and learn from them.

I had often mistaken that patience for a lack of compassion.

Now I wondered whether I had been the one who struggled to trust our son.

I put the photograph back.

Perhaps helping David meant giving him more than a free room.

Perhaps it meant giving him the chance to become responsible for the life he wanted.

I could not do that work for him.

I could only stop making it easier for him to avoid it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Stopped Offering Solutions Before Anyone Asked, and the Change in Our House Was Quiet but Harder Than I Expected

On Wednesday morning, David came into the kitchen while I was checking the mail.
