We're running low."

She wrote it down.

"Anything else?"

I looked at the list.

"Some bread would be useful."

She nodded and put the paper in her pocket.

It was the first time she had asked about the household groceries without assuming I would take care of everything.

I did not make too much of it.

I simply thanked her.

That afternoon, I went for a walk around the neighborhood.

The air was warm, and the sidewalks were dry from the previous day's rain.

I passed the house where an older couple had recently moved in.

They were standing in their driveway, trying to carry a potted plant toward the front door.

I stopped to help.

The woman thanked me, and we spoke for a few minutes about the neighborhood.

When I returned home, I felt lighter.

It reminded me that my life was still larger than the tension inside my house.

I had friends.

I had routines.

I had places to go and things to enjoy.

I did not need every person in my home to be happy with me every hour of the day.

That evening, David asked whether I wanted to watch a movie with them.

I agreed.

We sat in the living room, and Sarah chose something light.

I did not enjoy every part of it, but I enjoyed sitting with my son without feeling that we were waiting for another argument.

Halfway through the movie, David laughed at a scene.

It was the same sudden laugh he had always had.

For a moment, I felt the familiar warmth of being his mother.

I let myself enjoy it.

The next morning brought a smaller test.

I had planned to spend an hour reading in the living room.

When I came downstairs, Sarah was using the sofa to sort laundry.

Clothes were spread across the cushions.

She looked up.

"Can you give me a little while? I need to finish this."

I glanced at the clock.

I had intended to sit down with my book before going shopping.

I could have gone back upstairs.

That would have been easy.

It would also have been another small surrender made simply to avoid discomfort.

"I was hoping to sit here for a while," I said.

Sarah looked at the clothes.

"Oh. I didn't realize."

She began gathering them into a basket.

"You can finish," I told her. "I'll make my coffee first."

She shook her head.

"It's fine. I'll take these upstairs."

I watched her carry the basket away.

The exchange was ordinary.

Nobody raised a voice.

Nobody accused anyone of being selfish.

That was how I wanted things to work.

Not because we never inconvenienced one another, but because we could speak honestly without treating every preference as a demand.

I sat on the sofa with my book.

For a while, I read without thinking about the house.

Then I noticed the small wooden table beside the window.

My husband had built it years ago from leftover timber.

One leg was slightly uneven, so it rocked whenever I set a heavy cup on it.

He had promised to fix it.

He never did.

I placed my coffee on the table and smiled when it wobbled.

I had lived with that little flaw for years.

It had never occurred to me that I needed to replace the table simply because it was imperfect.

People were not tables, of course.

But I was beginning to understand that living together required patience without demanding that one person continually give way.

At lunchtime, David came home earlier than I expected.

He found me in the kitchen preparing a sandwich.

"Everything okay?"

"Yes. Why?"

He shrugged.

"I thought you seemed quiet this morning."

I looked at him.

"I was reading."

He nodded.

Then he leaned against the counter.

"Sarah said you wanted to use the living room."

"I did."

He looked uncomfortable.

"She didn't mean to get in your way."

"I know."

I finished making my sandwich.

David waited.

I could tell he wanted me to reassure him that there was no problem.

So I did, but only because it was true.

"We worked it out."

He relaxed.

"Good."

I carried my sandwich to the table.

He returned to the guest room.

I watched him go and thought about how easily I could have turned that exchange into another discussion about respect.

I did not need to.

The small problem had been resolved without anyone having to win.

That was progress.

Still, I kept the original agreement in mind.

They were staying in the guest room.

They were not paying rent.

They were supposed to use the time to get their finances in order and find another place.

The arrangement could be comfortable without becoming permanent.

I had to remember that.

Love could make a person generous.

It could also make a person reluctant to admit when generosity needed limits.

I had already learned how difficult it was to say no after offering help.

I did not want to reach a point where I felt trapped in an arrangement I had created myself.

That evening, I opened the notebook in which I had written down our original agreement.

I read the words again.

Temporary accommodation.

Guest room.

Time to save.

I closed the notebook and returned it to the drawer.

I was not making a legal document out of our relationship.

I was reminding myself why I had said yes in the first place.

I had wanted to help my son get through a difficult period.

I had not promised to provide every comfort he and Sarah might prefer.

The distinction seemed simple when I wrote it down.

Living by it would take longer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Guest Room Was Still Available, but I Began to Understand That Helping David Meant Letting Him Carry More of His Own Problems

The first few mornings after our conversation were easier.
