I said. "I'll sit over here."

She shifted her legs to make room on the sofa.

I sat down at the other end.

For twenty minutes, we watched different things on our screens without speaking.

It was awkward.

It was also perfectly manageable.

I wondered why I had been so worried about it.

Perhaps I had spent too long believing that keeping everyone comfortable was my responsibility.

It was not.

At breakfast the next morning, David asked whether I had thought any more about the bedroom.

I put down my fork.

"What is there to think about?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"Sarah still feels like the guest room is too small."

I took a breath.

"Then she can decide whether the arrangement works for her."

He stared at me.

"You're really not going to reconsider?"

"No."

He leaned back.

"I just thought maybe we could find a compromise."

I looked toward the hallway.

There were four bedrooms in the house.

One was mine.

One was the guest room.

The other two held boxes, seasonal decorations, and furniture I had not needed since my husband died.

If David and Sarah wanted to discuss storage, we could have done that.

If they needed a little more closet space, I could have helped.

But they had not asked for any of those things.

They had decided that the solution was to take the room I slept in.

"Compromise means both people have a say," I told him. "It doesn't mean I agree to something because you ask me often enough."

David rubbed his forehead.

"I wasn't trying to pressure you."

I wanted to believe that.

But I remembered the deadline.

I remembered Sarah's confidence when she said I had until eleven.

I remembered David standing beside her and telling me to respect their situation.

Maybe neither of them thought of it as pressure.

That did not change how it felt.

"I know you have problems to deal with," I said. "I want you to work them out. But my bedroom isn't part of the solution."

He nodded, though I could tell he was unhappy.

Then he finished his breakfast and left the table.

I stayed where I was.

I had not enjoyed the conversation.

But I was glad I had not backed away from the truth.

That afternoon, I decided to clear some space in the guest room closet.

Not because Sarah had demanded it.

Because I had offered them a temporary place to stay, and I wanted to make sure they could use the space comfortably.

I removed two boxes of old decorations and carried them into the storage room.

Then I moved a suitcase to the upper shelf.

The closet was not large, but there was more room than I had first realized.

When I finished, I stepped back and looked at it.

It was enough.

I had no idea whether Sarah would agree.

I also understood that I did not need her approval to know what I had provided.

That evening, she noticed the cleared space.

"You moved things around in here?"

"Just a few boxes."

She opened the closet and looked at the empty shelf.

"Oh."

"If you need more room for your clothes, you can use that section."

She ran her hand along the shelf.

"Thanks."

It was the first time since the argument that she had thanked me for something without adding a complaint.

I felt a small measure of relief.

Perhaps we could find a way to live together without repeating the same disagreement.

Perhaps the bedroom had become a symbol of something neither of us had known how to discuss.

I did not know.

I only knew that making reasonable adjustments was different from giving up my own space.

The following morning, I found David in the kitchen looking through a stack of mail.

He held up an envelope addressed to him.

"Did this come yesterday?"

"I put it with the rest of the mail."

He opened it, read the contents, and folded the paper.

I did not ask what it said.

His finances were his responsibility.

If he wanted help sorting something out, he could ask.

I was not going to assume that every problem in his life belonged to me.

That was harder than it sounded.

I had spent years watching for signs that David needed help.

A change in his voice.

A delay in returning a call.

A casual remark about a bill.

I could usually tell when something was bothering him.

My instinct was to step in before he had to ask.

Sometimes that had been useful.

Other times, it had prevented him from learning how to manage things himself.

I was beginning to see that helping too quickly could become a way of telling someone you did not trust them to handle their own life.

I did not want to do that anymore.

David put the envelope away.

Then he looked at me.

"Are we all right, Mom?"

I was surprised by the question.

"What makes you ask?"

He shrugged.

"You've been different."

I considered telling him that I had always been the same person.

That the only difference was that I had stopped agreeing automatically.

Instead, I answered honestly.

"I'm still hurt about what happened."

He looked down.

"I didn't think you'd take it this hard."

I felt the words settle between us.

He had not expected me to be hurt because he had not thought very carefully about what he was asking me to give up.

I wanted to explain that the bedroom was not simply a larger space.

It was where I slept, where I kept my personal things, and where I had built a private life after my husband died.

It was the one room in the house that had remained entirely mine.

But I had already explained enough.

"You don't have to understand every feeling I have," I said. "But you do have to respect my answer."

He nodded slowly.

This time, he did not argue.

I wanted to take that as a sign of progress.

I hoped it was.

Later that day, I went to the storage room to put away the boxes I had moved from the guest closet.

One box contained holiday decorations.

Another held old photo albums.

I placed the decorations on the shelf and set the albums on a lower table.

I had not looked through them in years.

I opened the top album.

There was David at eight years old, standing beside his father in the backyard.

His shirt was too large, and his hair stuck up at the back.

He was holding a small hammer while his father crouched beside him.

I remembered the day.

David had wanted to help build a birdhouse.

He had become frustrated when the nails bent.

His father showed him how to hold the hammer and strike straight.

David had kept trying until he got it right.

When the birdhouse was finished, he carried it around the yard as if he had built a house for a family of his own.

I smiled.

I wanted to remember that boy.

But I also needed to see the man he had become.

Both were real.

One did not cancel out the other.

I closed the album and returned it to the box.

Then I carried the box back to the storage shelf.

The guest room was still available.

My bedroom was still mine.

For the moment, that was the balance I could offer.

And it was the balance I intended to keep.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Thought the Hardest Part Would Be Saying No, Until I Realized How Much of My Life Had Been Built Around Saying Yes

The next few days passed without another direct argument.
