You were asking me to leave my bedroom."

She looked down at her phone.

"It just made sense to us."

I waited for her to explain why.

She did not.

After a moment, she put the phone on the table.

"David and I have a lot to figure out right now."

"I understand that."

"We're under pressure."

"I understand that, too."

She looked at me as if she expected those words to lead somewhere else.

Perhaps she wanted me to offer another solution.

Perhaps she wanted me to apologize for making the conversation uncomfortable.

I could not know.

I only knew that I had already helped in the way I had offered to help.

I was not going to invent a new sacrifice simply because the first one had not been enough.

"You can stay in the guest room while you get yourselves sorted out," I said. "That hasn't changed."

Sarah picked up her coffee.

"But you won't consider the other room?"

"No."

She took a drink.

"Fine."

The word came out flat.

I felt the old urge to soften my answer.

I wanted to explain that I was not trying to be cruel.

I wanted to remind her that I loved David and wanted them to succeed.

Then I realized she already knew those things.

My refusal was not a mystery.

She simply did not like it.

I left the kitchen and went to the laundry room.

I had a basket of towels waiting to be folded.

I worked slowly, matching corners and stacking the towels on the shelf.

The task calmed me.

It reminded me of the years when my husband and I had shared every household responsibility without keeping score.

He would fold towels badly, leaving one corner hanging out, and I would redo them while he pretended not to notice.

Sometimes he would deliberately fold one crooked just to annoy me.

I smiled at the memory.

Then I looked at the neat stack in front of me.

My life had changed when he died.

I had accepted that.

I had learned to make decisions alone, to repair things when I could, and to ask for help when I could not manage a job myself.

I had not expected that learning to live alone would also mean learning how to protect my independence from the people I loved.

By late morning, Sarah had gone upstairs.

I could hear the television in the guest room.

I finished the laundry and carried the towels to the bathroom.

Then I walked past my bedroom.

The door was open.

I stepped inside and looked around.

The photograph was still on the bedside table.

My reading glasses were beside it.

The dresser drawers were closed.

Nothing had been moved.

I sat on the bed for a moment.

Yesterday, I had felt as though I needed to defend the room.

Today, I realized I needed to stop treating its possession as something that could be negotiated every time Sarah was unhappy.

It was my bedroom.

That should have been enough.

At lunchtime, I made soup and ate it at the kitchen table.

Sarah came downstairs and warmed something in the microwave.

She took it back upstairs without sitting down.

I did not call after her.

I did not insist that we talk.

I had already made my position clear.

For the rest of the afternoon, I kept myself busy.

I paid two bills online.

I watered the plants near the back door.

I changed the sheets in my own bed, even though they were not dirty.

When I finished, I stood beside the bed and looked at the clean pillowcases.

I felt ridiculous for needing the reassurance.

Then I reminded myself that a person did not become weak simply because something hurt.

I could be hurt and still make a sensible decision.

I could love my son and still expect him to treat me fairly.

Those things were not opposites.

At five thirty, I began preparing dinner.

I cut vegetables on the wooden board my husband had bought at a market during a trip years earlier.

The board had a dark mark near one edge.

I had considered replacing it more than once, but I always put it back in the cupboard.

Some things were worth keeping because of the life attached to them.

I thought about that while chopping carrots.

Then I stopped myself.

I did not need to turn every household object into a lesson.

Sometimes a cutting board was just a cutting board.

David arrived shortly before six.

He came into the kitchen and set his keys on the counter.

"That smells good."

"Soup and bread."

"Perfect."

He washed his hands and helped set the table.

For a few minutes, I allowed myself to enjoy his company.

He told me about a problem at work.

I asked a question.

He answered.

We talked about a neighbor whose tree had grown over the fence.

It was the sort of conversation we used to have without effort.

Sarah joined us when the food was ready.

She ate quietly.

No one mentioned the bedroom.

After dinner, David took his plate to the sink.

I watched him rinse it.

He had done that as a boy when I reminded him.

Now he did it without being asked.

There were still good things about my son.

I did not want anger to erase them.

But good moments did not erase bad choices, either.

That was another distinction I was learning to make.

David dried his hands and looked at me.

"Do you need anything from the store tomorrow?"

"No, thank you."

"Okay."

He walked toward the living room.

I stood at the sink, listening to his footsteps.

I wanted to tell him that I missed the way we used to speak honestly.

I wanted to tell him that I had not invited him into my home so he could become a stranger to me.

But I also knew that a conversation could not be forced into being meaningful.

If he was ready to understand, he would have to do some of the work himself.

I finished washing the dishes.

Then I turned off the kitchen light and went upstairs.

The house was quiet again.

I closed my bedroom door and sat beside the photograph of my husband.

I looked at his familiar smile.

"I hope I'm doing this right," I said.

There was no answer, of course.

I did not expect one.

I simply needed to say it.

For years, I had thought being a good mother meant making sure my son never felt abandoned.

Now I was beginning to understand that I could not protect him from every disappointment.

Sometimes the most loving thing I could do was allow him to discover that other people had limits.

Even his mother.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Began Noticing Every Small Assumption in My Own House, and the Guest Room
