I said.

"So do I."

We sat quietly.

Then I asked him what he intended to do about Clara.

His expression tightened.

He said he knew he could no longer leave the situation unexplained.

I waited.

He admitted that he had allowed himself to live as though the difficult decisions could always be postponed.

He had kept me waiting for honesty.

He had kept other people living with the consequences of his choices.

He had treated time as if it could make the truth less painful.

I asked whether he understood that postponing a decision was also a decision.

He nodded.

"I understand that now."

I wanted to believe him.

But I had learned not to confuse understanding with change.

I told him I wasn't going to tell him whom to choose or what to feel.

He looked surprised.

I explained that I could not build a marriage by making all his decisions for him.

If he wanted to remain married to me, he needed to decide what that meant and act accordingly.

If he wanted a different life, he needed to be honest about that too.

What I could no longer accept was being kept in a position where I had to guess which version of his life was real.

Martin stared at the floor.

Then he said he was afraid of losing me.

I felt a familiar ache.

I still loved him.

That truth had not disappeared simply because I had stopped protecting him from consequences.

But I had begun to understand that his fear of losing me could not be the foundation of our future.

"I don't want you to stay because you're frightened," I said.

He looked up.

"I want you to make an honest choice."

He nodded.

For the first time, I didn't ask him to promise that he would.

I had said what I needed.

The rest belonged to him.

Later, I went upstairs and opened the drawer beside my bed.

I took out the notebook and read the questions I had written weeks earlier.

Some had been answered.

Some remained unresolved.

I turned to a clean page.

For a moment, I considered writing another question.

Instead, I wrote one sentence.

I cannot do his choosing for him.

I looked at the words.

They were simple, but they described the boundary I had struggled to establish for years.

I closed the notebook and returned it to the drawer.

When I went back downstairs, Martin was standing by the kitchen window.

He turned when he heard me.

"Are you all right?"

I thought about giving him the answer he wanted.

Then I decided to tell him the truth.

"I'm getting there."

He nodded.

I stood beside him for a moment.

Outside, the street was quiet.

There were no grand signs that our marriage was changing.

No sudden understanding that erased the years behind us.

There was only the two of us, standing in a familiar room, learning that love could not replace honesty.

I went to bed that night without asking Martin what he had decided.

I didn't need to ask again.

The next choice had to be his.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When Martin Finally Faced the Life He Had Created, I Had to Decide Whether Loving Him Was Enough to Make Me Willing to Live With Its Consequences

Martin didn't make another promise the next morning.
